696.0. "The disappearing Penis!" by CSC32::L_WHITMORE () Tue Feb 15 1994 19:21

I have a question concerning my sons penis. (he is 5
months old) The problem is difficult to describe, but
here goes. His penis disappears! It's as if it gets
pulled back into the "fatty" area that surrounds the
penis. It looks like a little round donut where the penis
should be, and if you press down on both sides of it, the
penis pops back out. I know this sounds really strange but
that's the only way I know to describe it. My son has been
circumcised but I don't know if that makes any difference.
My other son never had this problem but was a much smaller
baby. Logan is not fat, but is definitely larger than average.
Now what is really interesting about this is I had never
heard of this before my nephew was born almost 3 years ago,
but he has the same "condition". My sister took her son to 2
different doctors who both told her it was fairly common and
it was because of too much fat in the "fat pocket" surrounding
the penis. They both said her son would outgrow it by the time
he was 3. He'll be 3 in May and still has the problem. I plan to
take my son in to be checked also but thought I'd ask here if
anyone else has heard of this problem and if so, can I
expect my son and my nephew to "outgrow" it? Thanks. Lila

Maybe he has "John Wayne Bobbitt syndrome". :^)

    Sorry couldn't resist.

I remember seeing this on a friend's infant son who was a
little chubby. Never thought to ask if he ever outgrew it.

That's great! I'll have to relay that on to my sister!
    I needed a good laugh!

I understand the CONDITION, but is it a PROBLEM?

Since he can "pop" it out, it's available for urination, which is the primary
function of a penis for a three year old. And I assume that you are not
talking about the scrotum or testicles; if the testicles are not descended,
then that's a problem, but you didn't say that.

Talk to your pedi, but my take is that it's not something to worry about.

A friend of mine came to visit and her 1.5 year old son had the
same "condition" The Penis appeared to be more of a doughnut than an
actual penis. I mentioned it while I was changing his diaper and
although she was a tad worried, the child's (whose name is
unfortuantely, Peter) pediatrician was not in the least bit concerned.
There was a fair amount of fattiness in the thigh area as well.

It may be something that he outgrows but also remember that penis'
come in different sizes. Your son may just have a small penis.

I have a friend whose baby (now 14 months old) has this same
"condition". Her pedi told her it was nothing to worry about.
He was a fairly chubby baby and this was the explanation.
One thing that you might want to watch out for is that the
skin doesn't re-attach where the penis is always inverted. This
happened to her son and it ended up getting infected and they had
    to re-do the circumcision.

696.6My third son had this...64346::STEGNERFri Feb 18 1994 12:003
He was a chubby baby, and had the ring thing. The doctor said it was
extra fat. He had no problems, and the problem corrected itself. He
looks just like all the other boys now.... :-)

Thanks for the replies! I'm relieved to hear that my son will
    most likely outgrow this.

I am the author of the basenote and I thought I would update this.
My son is a year old today. His penis no longer"disappears"!
I'm not sure when it stopped doing that, but since he's been
walking he's trimmed down alot so that probably has alot to do
    with it. Lila
