We are bringing our son, Anthony, aged 5, to a dermatologist. He has slightly dark skin (my wife is half Italian) but he also has a darker area that seems to have been getting larger over the years. It's mainly on his right arm, shoulder and chest. She said they mentioned it might be something like 'vertigo' although she doesn't think that's the right name. What was the name of the thing that Michael Jackson claimed he has? Anyway, we'll know more in a week or so. Dave ps - I couldn't find any note with 'skin' or 'derm' in it. If I missed something, feel free to move this note.

I think the disease is "vitiligo", but that's when you _lose_ pigmentation in your skin, so you get white spots. My oldest son has some patches of melanin, too. He wasn't born with any of them, but his doctor said they are cafe au lait spots. He used to have one at the base of his throat that was the size of a small egg, but it's disappeared. My sister's daughter has a bunch of freckles on her knee that spell "rat", in lowercase letters. I'm not kidding--it's clear as a bell. Luckily, the letters are upside down so the daughter hasn't noticed it yet... :-) | |||||

Vitiligo is when the dark skin cells die and turn white (Lose of Pigmentation) I have had this since I was a pre-teen and my older brother has had it since he was around 5 (he's 36 now). I am sure that the dark patchs are nothing to worry about but you are doing the right thing by taking him to the dematoligist to have them checked out. Liz |
