631.1 | little eye contact = autistic? | STAR::AWHITNEY | | Mon Nov 22 1993 12:08 | 5 |
| I am curious as to why little eye contact = autistic? 4 weeks
seems young to me for lots of eye contact but (I hate to admit it) -
I really don't remember exactly how Sammy Kay was at 4 weeks.

631.2 | Maybe too early to hold eye contact... | NOVA::JOSHI | | Mon Nov 22 1993 12:24 | 4 |
| My daughter is about 3 months old; as far as I remember, she did not hold
eye contact for an extended period at 4 weeks either. Now, though, she will
make eye contact, smile, recognize etc! So perhaps you should just wait and
see what your baby does in a few weeks!

631.4 | is this behavior only with Mom? | BROKE::STEVE5::BOURQUARD | Deb | Mon Nov 22 1993 13:29 | 7 |
| *If* this behavior is only seen with Mom, it may be that the baby senses
when he's being held by his mother and doesn't feel a need to study Mom's
face.
Hoping that this is *not* a problem...

I remember reading that when breastfeeding, the baby studies the
mother's face with incredible loving intensity and that it is one
of the most rewarding parts of breastfeeding. I can tell you that
Chloe never looked once at me, she was too busy getting as much milk as
she could. She just stared into space.
I can't remember her doing much focusing or eye contact either when
little, and she is now a very active two year old.
I would try to reassure your wife, she is probably just still under-
going all the postpartum emotional upheaval. Let us know what the
doctor says.
Patricia.

I noticied a few months ago a friends baby always making/keeping eye
contact, and my two not really bothering. However, I'm terrible for now
making eye contact and always feel self-concious about it.
Soo, when holding the kids and talking to them and reading books and
stuff now, I try and keep eye contact with them, and they are
reciprocating for longer and longer periods. So you can work on it!
