| A Pneumothorax is a hole in the lung. I don't know what the treatment
is, but it *can* be life threatening for premature babies. Thankfully
I did not have to deal with it. In what context are you posing the
question?

| A friend of mine gave birth last night, and her baby is now
in icu with Pneumothorax. I was just trying to get more info
as to what it was, treatment, etc.
The baby was not premature.
Thanks.

| The treament for Pneumothorax involves putting a tube through the chest
wall and using some sort of suction to equalize the preasure on the
lung so that it will stay inflated. At least that's what I think the
tube is for. Heather had two of these.

| It's the fancy word for "collapsed lung". I had this happen to me when
I was 21. The tube in the lung is to allow the air that has escaped
into the chest from inside the lung to exit as the lung slowly
re-attaches itself to the chest wall (pleural membrane). It is a common
condition of pre-mature infants whose lungs haven't developed enough
structural strength to handle the mechanics of breathing. If treated
early it's not a problem, but if both lungs go down it can be fatal if
you don't get on it immediately.

Ariel is breathing much better now. The doctors were able to bleed off
the air pocket that formed as a result of the hole. She is no longer
in an oxygen tent but is still in ICU for observation.

| Glad to hear Ariel is breathing better...
My son was born with a right pneumathorax (I don't know if it's spelled
this way either!).
He was in an oxygen tent in the ICU for two days, and was given many oxgen
saturation tests, and lung x-rays.
The hole healed itself before he left the hospital, and he has not had
any long-term health effects from this experience (his must not have
have been as severe as the ones mentioned earlier in this note). We
just had a couple of scary days before he got a clean bill of health.
BTW, he was not a preemie...he swallowed meconium prior to birth which
created the hole in his right lung...

| Lesley,
That is exactly what it appears to have happened with Ariel!
She is doing very well and should be out of ICU sometime this morning.
