628.0. "Christmastime - Boston" by GRILLA::LALIBERTE (NEI/Systems Engineering) Tue Nov 16 1993 11:36

We are taking 3 kids (5, 7 and 10 year old) into Boston the
Saturday (18th) before Christmas. We are looking for holiday things
    to do.

The current plan is the Enchanted Village (is there one this year ?)
and FAO Schwartz. I know that the Village thing is not that great
but the 5 year old has never seen it. Also the 7 and 10 year
old have never been on the subway/streetcar.

Does anyone have any other suggestions... ? also looking for a
fun place to take them to lunch.

( And yes, I must be crazy to do this on a Saturday but it is the
      only date open )

    thanks

Don't know what direction you're coming from, but leaving the car at
Riverside is a favorite way to go in town. Since Riverside's the end
of the (green) line, you always get good seats, and it's a nice long
ride through leafy suburbs before you get to the grimy underground T we
    adults know and love :-)

Might be prohibitively expensive, but the Top of the Hub offers an
exciting view for kids. Or you could just go to the observation deck
as one of the planned activities. Or try the John Hancock bldg - do they
still have the film taken from a helicopter over Boston? I remember
you could view the huge floating weight that stabilizes the building
from swaying in the wind; that was pretty cool (for the 7- and 10-year-
    olds, anyway).

oh...i forgot about the Pru and Hancock buildings...thanks...good idea.

Also, I just thought of the mapparium at the Christian Science church.

we will be coming into Boston via Alewife/Harvard red line.

The Red Line is a great way to go in -- the underground part isn't so grimy,
and you get a real spectacular view of Boston when you go across the
Longfellow Bridge.

If you get off at Park Street, you are right at the Boston Common, which is
usually decorated. If the weather's right, you may be able to catch some
carolers or other musicians on the Common as well.

You could also take the kids to Fanual Hall Market place. It is always
nicely decorated during the holiday season and has some good place's to
eat also. There is also a Disney store there and many other neat
shops. They also have the caroler's and bell ringers (they play
christmas carols with bells). You could also take them to the Aquarium
which is with in walking distance from Fanual Hall.

The Children's Science Museum is a GREAT favorite of my kids' ... lots
of things for them to do/touch/play with. If you can get to a college
campus, sometimes they have a "public"ish skating rink. There might
even be a place on the Boston Common to skate.

If you choose Museums, DEC usually offers discounts on tickets.
