548.0. "Activities for teen-age boys" by DEMON::AYAYAY::MARSH () Fri Jun 25 1993 16:22

We are having a 16 year old foreign exchange student from Spain
visit us for a month. He arrives on Wednesday. We don't have teenagers,
so I need tips on what a teen-age boy would think is fun to do?

The program takes the students on field trips to cultural events and the
families handle the week-ends.

I'm thinking of things such as Water Country, malls, movies. Tell me how
your kids have fun.

Thanks.

May I suggest you get the teen to know you and your family - your
cultural ways etc. Taking them places every weekend is nice, but they
will need rest, too. Don't run them ragged just to show them a good
time. To see what kids his age are up to will be interesting - the
mall, the movies (Europe usually starts movies later than the US),
Hampton Beach. But do him a favor - allow whether you go or not to be
his choice, too. Most teens I know can't go 5 days a week without
sleeping till noon on Saturday and Sunday!!

Water Country will be a big hit - maybe you can get a few of them
together to go. It's always a big hit!

My son will be visiting my sister with a friend in the US this year and
going to basketball camp with the Houston Rockets. Some of the things
they have planned are: (both boys are 14)

    1. The mall, the mall, the mall. Both boys have been saving all their
pocket money and cutting lawns to buy shoes and sports clothes and to
eat at Taco Bell and MacDonalds.

    2. Basketball and more basketball. My sisters have located all the
recreation areas near them and are providing them with bicycles.

    3. Riding around on buses. Dirk and Oumar pride themselves on their
independence and ability to get around in a strange city. (We have
taught them the word "FREEZE!" ok ok sick joke :-)

    4. Sightseeing in Texas. I don't know all what they'll see, one sister
lives in Houston and the other in Austin.

    5. Waterskiing. One sister has a summer house on a lake and the boys
are looking forward to try water skiing.

    6. Renting videos and eating buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

About the last one. When Dirk was 7 he visited my sister in Texas. He
came back and asked me if I could make chicken like Jackie. I tried
every coating imaginable- crushed potato chips, corn flakes, breading,
instant mashed potatoes, every spice imaginable. I tried roasting,
baking, deep fat frying but I couldn't match my sister's chicken. Then
we were vacationing in the US once and had some KFC. Dirk pipes up
with, "This tastes just like the chicken Jackie makes!!"

Do you have a relative or someone his age that you could introduce to
him? Having someone his age go places with you might also be a joy
    to him.

How about some driving excurtions. What comes to mind are:

Drive up the top of Mt. Washington, and the related area, also there is
the Monadnock area, the Cathedral in the Pines in Rinds (Due north of
    Westminster)

Try a day in downtown Boston, walk the historic Freedom trail, show him
the Boston Common and Gardens (the gardens with the flowers NOT the
Bruins!) ride on the swanboats, show him the duckling statue and even
though he's a teen he might enjoy the statues and how they relate to
the book "Make way for ducklings". Maybe you could somehow get tickets
to a Red Sox game. Then there's the culture and history of Cambridge,
Harvard Square and such. There is Old Ironsides and that area in
    Charlestown.

How about a ride up or down the New England Seacoats,Rockport/
Gloucester, Cape Code, or make a weekend away on the Maine coast,
introduce him to a New England Clambake dinner!

Can you tell this kid was raised just outside of Boston? These were
the things my family always did with out of town guests.
