540.0. "chess club for kids?" by OLCROW::LIM () Thu Jun 17 1993 16:10

Does anyone know any Chess club for 10+ year old kids in Acton/Littleton area?

I have a ten-year-old son who is very interested in chess game. Unfortunately
neither my husband nor myself is much a chess player, not to mention that we
hardly have time to sit down with him to play a game when his 2-year-old brother
is around.

Thanks,

Usually the best place for a kids' chess club is a school. Another
possibility is a Boy's Club; the Boy's Club in Nashua had a chess
tournament last year, for example.

The Massachusetts Chess Association often runs scholastic tournaments, but
they don't do much during the summer. Some adult tournaments have
scholastic sections where kids will play against other kids, or else
beginners sections where kids could play either against kids or against
low-rated adults. This is a slow time for chess, though. The tournaments
I can think of coming up are: the Concord Open, which I'm running in
Concord N.H. on June 26th has a beginners section; the New Hampshire Open
in Nashua on July 25th will have a beginners section, and the New England Open
in Lowell on September 5th will have both scholastic and beginners sections.

There are adult chess clubs which meet every week, but I'm not sure how
good they'd be for kids. The Westford club meets every Tuesday and the
Billerica club meets every Friday.

You might want to post this note in GRIM::CHESS_DISCUSSION.
