My daycare provider has a group of six children. Three of the toddlers between the ages of one and two have really gotten into hair pulling. I'm entering this note in her behalf to get feedback on what other parents do when this behavior has occured. Karle (daycare provider) communicates with the puller letting them know that we don't pull hair, it hurts...etc.; she then puts them in timeout and comforts the child who's head got yanked. She is interested in hearing what other methods parents use to work towards correcting this behavior and what their experiences have been when they have gone thru it with their children. Since Chelsea was practically bald at birth and barely has more then a fine mop on top of her head and she almost a year...I don't have to worry about her hair being pulled....but since she could become a yanker some day, I would also like to hear your comments on this subject. ....on another note with hair pulling....I have some friends that say their young toddlers go thru a stage where they are yanking out their own hair...I've heard this related to a comfort reaction...similar to thumb sucking, binky stroking...etc. Curious on others who have had experience with this behavior and what you can do to keep you child from harming the hairs on their head! Thanks in advance for your replies! ..Lori

Lori, My son is a hair puller at his daycare. He started as soon as he began to crawl (7mths). Now at 9 mths he is still pulling hair. Unfortunately at his age, he does not understand "no" or that it hurts. He pulls dolls' hair and stuffed animals just like the other children's hair. Basically what they do is remove him from the situation. Put him in his crib or the swing. I think the time-out approach is all you can do with a toddler as well. Good luck! Jeanne | |||||
