472.0. "Sunscreens" by NEWPRT::SZAFIRSKI_LO (IVF...I'm Very Fertile!) Wed Mar 10 1993 12:23

    Couldn't find a topic on sunscreen...but if there is an appropriate
    place to move this moderator please do so.

    We finally have had a good spell of sunshine after so much rain here
    in California. Went to the Swap Meet with Chelsea on Sunday and knew
    were going to be there about 5 hours and that the temp would be heating
    up to about 85.

    Haven't used sunscreen on her yet (she is 10 months). I bought a
    bottle of SP30 (Johnsons) and put it on her face, arms and legs. She
    was also wearing a little viser type hat that came down on her forehead
    and shaded her face.

    Well she broke out in all these white pimples on her forehead. Nothing
    on her arms or legs. So this is what I'm wondering....

    1. Is it a reaction to the sunscreen...and if it is, why didn't she
        have any white pimples on her legs or arms.

    2. Is is a combination of the sunscreen and the sweat and the hat
        being on her forehead and possible the pours getting clogged.

    3. Any recommendations as to how to treat the rashy area besides just
        good cleaning. Doesn't seem to be itching her or bothering her at
        all.

    Last...anything I should know about sunscreens on infants...since this
    is a first go-around with this product on my baby.

    Thanks in advance!

    Lori,

    The little white bumps could very well be heat rash. My son Michael
    used to get those every time he was in the sun, even when he didn't
    wear sunscreen.

    Be careful putting sunscreen on the face. I used some Johnson&Johnson
    for kids just this weekend thinking it would be gentle on my eyes. I
    was wrong, one eye watered and stung the whole day. I know there are
    sunscreens out there that don't sting, I just can't think of names
    right now.

472.2Sunscreen warningNERMAL::MARZULLAWed Mar 10 1993 14:309
Don't find out the hard way like I did, but last year I applied sunscreen to
both of my kids on our first outing our last spring/summer and still, they
burned. So severly, that I took one child to see the dr. He said that
sunscreens don't keep their potency over the winter and we should toss the
bottle at the end of the summer and get a new bottle.

I had never heard of this and there are no warnings on the bottle, but believe
me, I have already tossed my bottle from last year and do plan on starting with
a fresh one this year.
472.3Good to knowEMDS::CUNNINGHAMWed Mar 10 1993 15:298

    Thats good to know. I ran out at the end of the season last year and
    still bought a big bottle thinking it would be around for this year.
    Glad to know I better buy another.

    Thanks for the info!

472.4yes, found a difference between lotionsPOCUS::CUFFThu Mar 11 1993 08:5416
    My daughter and I have fair skin and don't leave our house in sunny
    weather without sunscreen. I have found a definite difference
    in our skin's reaction to various sunscreens and took a while
    to figure out which one protected without causing a reaction to
    the skin. In my case, the reaction was a stinging sensation
    and acne-looking bumps later in the evening, typically lasting
    a few days. I do remember using something with PABA (and didn't
    bother to read the label that day) and had a bad reaction for
    several days.

    In your case, it could have been the heat, but you are
    wise to question the sunscreen itself. I just experimented
    till we found one that worked for us, WaterBabies. It doesn't
    seem to bother us and protects just fine.

    Good luck!
472.5PABA doesn't agree with meTNPUBS::STEINHARTBack in the high life againThu Mar 11 1993 09:185
    When I use PABA, I get red blotches on my skin. It looks and feels
    like sunburn but fades shortly after I wash off the PABA.

    I found that Water Babies by Coppertone was very good to Danielle's
    skin. It is Paba free. And it comes in 35+ protection, anything else on
    her skin she tends to break out in a rash.

	My pediatrician reccomended not using any sunscreen much over 15 [up
to 20?] because it blocked the skin pores too much and to keep the proper cover
on a baby. The skin is most sensitive on the face, so this might be it.

472.8Try Mary Kay's sunscreenGLOSS::KAPLANMAUREENThu Mar 11 1993 16:1117

    	Try Mary Kay's waterproof sunscreen SPF 25 (around $8.00/tube).

    	It's excellent! I've used it on my daughter since she was about
    	a year old, with no trace of a burn. She has very fair skin and
    	loves the sunshine. One tube lasts a whole season for both of us
    	and we have never had a reaction. We spent a week in Miami in
    	January in 85 degree sunshine and I only re-applied the lotion
    	every 4 hours. It's great for kids, no eye-sting, but if you want
    	a tan, try something with a lower SPF... nothing gets through this
    	stuff!

    	I did keep a "Desert Storm" type of a hat on her (big brim and
    	a 5 inch square "tail" in the back, with cute little cows on it
    	of course :) ) so that I only put a little bit on her face.

472.9I use AvonASABET::DOLANFri Mar 12 1993 12:3518
    I have always used Avon SunBLOCK. I don't know if there is a
    difference between Sunblock and Sunscreen, but I've always had good
    luck with it. My daughter does not have sensative skin nor is she
    pale, but we'll have the baby (he'll be about 11 months) at the beach
    this year and that's what I plan on using on him. I use the 6 tanning
    spray unless I'm in the sun for the whole day.

    I've heard that 15 is the highest SPF you can get and the higher
    numbers are just a selling gimick. Has anyone heard that?

    BTW, Avon is having a sale on sunblock this campain for 2/7.50. I do
    not sell it, I just happen to have looked at a book. I've had to buy
    some at the last minute and have paid up to 9.00 for one bottle.

    I also use the Avon sun products. I'm not sure if it is sunSCREEN or
    sunBLOCK though. My son, who is 2 1/2 yrs old has extreme allergies
    and excema and extremely light/sensitive skin. This is the only product
    I have found that does not aggravate either one. Does not sting his eyes,
    cause a rash or make him congested, and gives him good sun protection, no
    sunburn yet! It is also unscented.

    I used Waterbabies on my daughter last year but she was not
    too mobile and I could keep a hat on her. THis year I know
    she can pull them off and since she still (17 Months) has
    very little hair I need to cover her head with sunscreen.

    Does any one know of one that is NOT greasy or smelly and
    has used it on a this younger age?

    I hate putting that greasy stuff on her head.

    we used Waterbabies on the 8 month old twins in Florida last week,
    worked great! They were out in the sun a lot, and kept their lovely
    pinky-white colour. Its very water-soluable, they were in and out of
    the sea all the time and kept their coverage all day.

    The best part was Billie was always scoffing sand, the next day her poo
    was a sight to see! (I was working on the, "she'll get fed of eating it,
    and its better than constantly saying No" theory . Didn't work, she kept
    munching the sand.)

    Can't say the same for the adults 8-((((((((((((((((
