186.0. "Is this toy a choking hazard?" by DEMING::WATSON () Mon Jun 22 1992 13:59

I was trying to enter a reply to note 184.0, which had a topic related
to Geraldo Rivera and Fischer Price's little people causing babies to
choke. A few months ago, I saw something like that on another news
program (like 60 minutes or 20/20) and immediately put my daughter's
Little People out of reach for the day. I think, however, that a few
years ago, the items were much smaller and that today's size (about 3"
tall), is not the same size that babies were choking on.

In response to your question, no I hadn't heard about any boycott...and
I don't think one is necessary. If parents use common sense about the
toys they buy for their children, those things wouldn't happen (at
    home).

Little Tykes has several toys that have very small people...an example
is Noah's Ark (Noah and his wife) and some of the construction trucks.
Those are a size that a baby could indeed choke on, so PLEASE use
    caution around the little angels.

Not to start down a rat hole or anything, but my daughter just over
1 year old has the Little tykes Noah's ark and the Noah and his wife
are small but plump. Not even close to the size the "old" little
    people were.

To change the subject my mother in law got me this clear
plastic tube it's called something like a choke tube, what it is, if a
toy or what ever can fit thru it a child under 3 can choke on the toy
or what ever and should not be given to the child and the Noah and wife
do not fit in this tube.

    Just my .02 cents.

Another "less expensive" way to see if a toy is too small for the
kids...Place it in the palm of your hand and close your hand. If your
hand covers the toy, it's too small. If you have small hands like me,
you can say if the toy is 75% covered it's too small.

My kids have the little people from 7 years ago. We have passed them
on to my niece and I don't believe she could fit them in her mouth.
She might be able to get part of it in, but certainly not the whole
    thing.

I've seen the new little people in the store. Will they fit the "cars"
and such from the other sets such as Main St USA or even the House??

If a toy, will fit into one of the plastic 35 mm film containers, then
    it's too small...

I have seen the choke tubes sold in one of the pushcart places in
Quincy market, also at the "progressive" toy stores like the one in the
Greendale mall, and the Gentle Elephant in Northboro. Usually around
    $3.

But I think the base discussion was about the tiny pieces, like the
hats on the little people, becoming the choking hazard not the toy
    itself.

And no I don't believe the new little people fit the old cars and such,
    quite the same.

I read somewhere "if it can fit in a toilet paper tube" then
    it's a choking hazard!
