Why don't you use the Digital Referrel service - they will
provide you with agencies.
|
45.2 | Using Digital's referral service | GIAMEM::D_PAGET | | Thu May 14 1992 16:47 | 5 |
| I have used Digital's referral service. What they do is give you a list of
agencies, their fees, etc. They don't provide any "value added" to tell you
who might have a better/worse reputation than others.
Thanks anyway

45.7 | Au Pair Agencies | SELLIT::SUDSY::Conferencing-User | | Mon Feb 15 1993 12:46 | 29 |

My sitter informed me that she will no longer be taking care of my children
when I come back from maternity leave this fall. This comes as no surprise
since both children are in school fulltime. I think she feels worse about
this than I do a moment. I'm sure I'll be in panic city come this fall,
since I trust her implic with the well being of my children.
We are now researching the possiblity of an au pair or someone coming to
our home during the day this coming September. My sister and brother-in-law
are in their second year of this type of arrangement. My sister will be
providing me information on the agency she uses out of Washington, D.C.
We are looking for information on other Au Pair agencies, their fees and
rules as well as any comments.
In addition, on other alternatives that would allow us to keep our
children in our home during the day. We will have a 6 year old in first
grade, 2 1/2 year and a four 1/2 month old this coming September.
We live in Milford, Ma. The hours would be 8:15 am to 4:30 - 4:45 pm,
5 days a week.
Thanks,
Pat Koczwara

45.9 | looking for live-in | MYJAM::MYSEL | The Revolution is only a T-shirt away | Wed Nov 03 1993 13:47 | 17 |
|
My sister and her 5 yr. old son are moving to the Boston
area (Lexington, Newton, Brookline). She is a single mother and her
job requires some travel. She is hoping to find a live-in, possibly
a graduate student, who would be available to take care of her son
when she needs to travel.
She would provide room and board and an agreed upon weekly
payment in exchange for care for her son on an "as needed basis".
If you know of agencies or other resources that she could use to find
someone, it would be much appreciated - please send me a note with
any information.
Thanks

45.10 | Just beginning the Search | MR4DEC::JONES | | Wed Dec 08 1993 21:45 | 24 |
| I am looking for a potential live-in for my three Children. I
travel on average one day a week, or have meetings that get me
home after 6, so I need someone who either would be here at 3
when they get home and/or could stay over when I travel, or who
would live in all the time.
I saw one note that suggested a name of someone who would be available
and will call that person tomorrow. However, I would be
interested in either mail, or a reply here from people with
either friends or relatives in this business that have experience,
have CPR training, have transportation and like to swim(in the summer)
...I have a pool.We do not smoke or drink in my
home. My children are 7,10, 13.
I have investigated and have the list of Nanny agencies that were
referenced above. I am considering going that route if I find
no other connections through this notes file, church connections
or from some of the local colleges. It seems, however, that there
is a lot of competition for this type of service particularly from
the two breadwinner families that tend to skew the salaries on the
high end, so I wonder what the sense is from people in this notes
file that are focused on helping each other.

********************************************
Over the last month, my life went from a hum-drum, 'nothing ever
happens to me' lifestyle to one filled with constant changes
and struggles. I am asking the parenting community for any
recommendations or help to alleviate my stress level.
It all began Sept 9th. My husband was told by Corp (non Digital)
that he was being sent to several field jobs across the country
beginning immediately. Being a N.E. boy, and not wanting the hassle
of traveling and being away from his wife, daughter or mother
(let alone his well manicured lawn) for
what promised to be months, he began job interviewing outside his
firm. He's well connected so finding a job should not have been
a difficult thing, so we thought.
Sept 14th, his mother had a heart attack and passed away within 36 hours.
(She was 80 and could run circles round me, but she did have an
ongoing heart condition, and was being monitored routinely).
We are dealing with this as well as can be expected.
Because of schedule constraints, Corp at last forced a decision
on my husband and he left last week for geographies TBD later.
He'll be coming home for turkey and Santa and then not
until late spring. I miss him already.
Bottom line, my dilemma is I am now acting as a single parent, working a
new job frequently after hours work (ie 7 pm).
In addition, I must complete a major project (requiring many
meetings and planning amongst several functions) by May.
I also must sell our current home (on the market now) while
attempting to cleaning MIL's house so we can move in.
Furnishings of both houses will have to be consolidated under one
roof (major crisis!!). And do we have furniture...
i am considering asking a college student who can serve many
functions similar to a live in nanny. I would need this
person late afternoons, evenings especially and at least 1 weekend
day, possibly all w/e from Jan-May. Roles are specifically,
- Begin dinner and clean up afterwards
- Light housekeeping
- Bathe and put daughter to bed
- Available all weekends from Jan-May while I work
- Pick up at daycare (Harvard area) 2-3 times per week
No care during week days would be needed unless day care closed
due to holidays or school cancellations, or daughter is sick and can't
go to school (occasional cold...).
I would consider either having a student live in free of charge
or pay that person if they did not live in, as long as responsbilities
are met. Locale is Burlington/Lexington area.
My daughter and I are now our only nearby family - others are elderly
or far away. Friends could help, but asking for help like this
daily would tax friendships or neighbors.
Can anyone recommend solutions I haven't considered or offer
names of interested parties. I will try nanny agencies as well
so I can get ball rolling.
Many thanks -
'Hanging in there'!

45.18 | Been there, done that | XCUSME::HATCH | On the cutting edge of obsolescence | Tue Oct 18 1994 11:20 | 25 |
| I did exactly this kind of work when I was in college. I don't recall
the type of agency I went though to get these positions (I had 2 homes
in 3 years) but they were an agency that would post ads on college
bulletin boards. The deal was free room and board in exchange for child
care and light household chores. In one family I did the shopping and
made the meals, I had a car made available to me to do the shopping and
bring the children places (3 young boys). My commitment extended to
ever other weekend. Your plan sounds very workable based on what I'd
done.
I suppose the families that I lived with paid some sort of placement
fee, I paid nothing, but saved 5K year with the free board, a much
more valuable commodity to me than a token pay check. As it was I also
worked 20 hours outside the home for a pay check. I suppose you could
attempt to post adds yourself, but it may be a lot of work to achieve
the coverage an agency has.
If the yellow pages are of no help in locating such an agency, try some
college career center/job placement offices for colleges in your area.
I happened to have gone to Bentley in Waltham, and Waltham is commutable
to Burlington.
Good luck,
Gail

Tufts had a listing of such jobs in it's career center, too, and
is commuting distance to Burlington.
Perhaps a few phone calls to area colleges would help!

| Digital contracts with FamilyWorks to help employees find day care options
that are right for them. The cost is free (though I suppose Digital pays).
I am using them now and find the information very useful. Call personnel and
ask for their number (I don't have it with me at the moment.) Good luck!

| I had 8 au pairs in just over 3 years..and some months had no au pairs.
be careful. My experience with 2 different agencies is that you can
luck out and have a happy child (2 of mine stayed the full year) and
you can be very unlucky. The girls don't always know what they are
getting themselves into, don't always take house rules seriously, and
often think that if it doesn't work out they can just change families.
Unfortunately, becasue of supply and demand issues, agencies do
reassign au pairs and keep trying rather than send them home.
As I said, I had 2 good experiences and would be happy to have either
of those girls back again...and, even, one of the others who decided to
go home after a month..
