39.1 | Were Fisher-Price car seats recalled? | GOLF::BROUILLET | | Thu Apr 16 1992 17:19 | 12 |
| Our 6-month-old is about to outgrow his infant seat. We have a
Fisher-Price car seat left over from when my 7-year-old was a baby. A
friend told us that the FP car seats had been recalled for some type of
problem with the harness, but that's all she knew. Does anyone know
anything about this? There is no manufacturers address or phone number
on the seat (might have been at one time, but it's gone now). I called
the "national car seat safety line" a couple of months ago, and they
were supposed to send some info, but nothing has arrived yet. If
there's a problem with the seat, I'd like to get it fixed before we
start using it again. Any info would be appreciated.

39.2 | No recall- But a potentially serious problem | MR4DEC::PTHIBAULT | | Mon Apr 20 1992 23:25 | 10 |
| Hi,
the seats weren't recalled. There was, however, discovered to be
a problem with the harness belt. It some times was found to stick in
the up position. this possibly could result in choking for a little
one. This did almost happen to my oldest. What they will send you upon
request is a button with a push pin and lock. You just place this on
the strap in the right location and it prevents this from ever being a
problem again. Please check the previous notes file for the pho number.
Thats where I got it. Also try 800 information for Fisher Price. pt

39.3 | Seat Cover Too! | ICS::SIMMONS | | Tue Apr 21 1992 12:35 | 5 |
| The seat cover was also replaced. I believe it had something to do
with flamability. I read it somewhere in Parenting II I believe.

39.4 | foam liner under seat - FP | RICKS::PATTON | | Tue Apr 21 1992 12:51 | 11 |
| Actually, it was the foam pad under the seat cover that had to be
replaced because of flammability. I called the 800 number at the
time (maybe 2 years ago?) and FP sent out a new pad promptly.
It was no big deal to replace.
I'm not sure it's anything to get worried about; the harness
problem was more serious due to the number of times per day (or
week or whatever) that you release the harness/shield and run the
risk of choking the child.

39.5 | FP Harness and Pad | CSOA1::ZACK | | Tue Apr 21 1992 13:16 | 13 |
| Some time ago I received a letter from FP that said there was a
problem with the harness on certain models of the car seat. (My was one
of them). Apparently the harness had a tendancy to break and was unable
to snap shut. When I called their 800 number (I am sorry I no longer have
this). They asked me to read the number off of a small sticker that was
on the bottom of the seat. When I gave them this number they sent me
the "modifications" that I needed. I received a foam pad and a new
harness (My seat had already had the button). I was amazed at how much
easier my seat was to snap. I didn't realized that my seat had broken.
I was even considering pitching the seat and buying a new one for my #2
baby because the harness had been such a pain.

| I read the recall sheet at the pedi's office. They are recalling just
the cradle part. If you can show proof of destroying it, they will
rebate you $25.00 or I think you can send it back to them for the
rebate.
Make sure you call their phone number (which I don't have, but the
pedi's office should be able to give it to you) and find out the details.

-< Ford Motor Says It Is Recalling 700,000 Taurus, Sable Station Wa >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Business Brief: Ford Motor Says It Is Recalling 700,000
1986-92 Taurus, Sable Station Wagons
Copyright Dow Jones & Co. 1992
Wall Street Journal
May 18 1992 2001
DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford Motor Co. said it is recalling 700,000
1986-1992 Taurus and Sable station wagons because of a rear compartment
that has trapped 11 children, one of whom died.
The children have been trapped in a small compartment that serves as
the footwell area in wagons with a rear-facing third seat, and as a storage
compartment in wagons without the third seat. What happened is that small
children crawled in the compartment, locked themselves in, and were unable
to get out.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration began an
investigation into the problem in August, but the investigation
automatically ended when Ford decided to go ahead with a recall.
Ford has several reports of children who received heat-related injuries
before they were released from the compartment. The one death involved a
five-year-old girl in Beauford, S.C., who suffocated in the compartment of
a Sable station wagon in June 1991. Ford has since reached a monetary
settlement with her family but won't say for how much.
The recall covers virtually all Taurus and Sable wagons sold since the
vehicles were introduced in December 1985. About 48,000 of the vehicles
were sold in Canada, the rest in the U.S. In early May, Ford switched to a
different latch for the rear compartment, one that can be locked only with
a key and that can be opened easily from the inside. In the recall, Ford is
replacing the old "slam-close latch" with the new latch that requires a
key.
Ford dealers won't have replacement latches until July. Until then,
Ford is asking owners to keep the compartment cover closed and locked.
Owners can also take the car to a dealer who will deactivate the latch.
In a separate emmissions recall Friday, Ford said it is replacing
electronic engine controls on about 17,400 1992-model Taurus and Sable
vehicles with 3.8-liter engines. These vehicles may exceed emissions
standards. In both recalls, the work is being performed by Ford dealers
free of charge to car owners.

39.11 | warning on pick-up passengers | AKOCOA::TRIPP | | Thu Jun 04 1992 17:50 | 19 |
| NOT a recall as such, but a warning from the Federal Department of
Transportation.
Many times parents will allow children (and pets) to ride in the back
of a pickup truck with a "cap" on. (the covers that make them look
like a camper or Blazer type vehicle).
Several children and pets have died due to carbon monoxide poisoning
caused when the exhaust fumes seep into the closed up back compartment.
Parents, observing their children, never seemed to know until it was
TOO LATE, because they simply believed their childrent were sleeping,
when in fact they had been overcome by the carbon monoxide fumes.
I do understand the *very recent* models emit no carbon monoxide, so it
would seem that unless your vehicle is under a year old, this danger
exists.

| re: .11
Not to start a rathole but, I don't think parents should allow children
to ride in the back of a pickup truck, period!!! Any child riding in
any vehicle should be in some sort of safety restraint and any parent
that allows their children to ride in a vehicle without such safety
restraints should have their heads examined.

| re: .12
Lori can't be any more right! No child should be without a safety
restraint. They become a human projectile.
We had a toddler that was standing in his mom's car on the passenger
side when she inched her way up a sobriety check lane in Michigan. She
was stopped, started to move forward and had to stop again, and the
child hit his head just right on the dashboard/window and broke his
neck. The child died either right away or on the way to the hospital.

39.14 | thank you | AKOCOA::TRIPP | | Fri Jun 12 1992 13:31 | 18 |
| re the last two.... very nicely put. I wish EVERY parent would
restrain the children. I think in the last week alone I've seen at
least two cars a day with children of all ages bouncing around loose in
the car. Just yesterday it was a preschool toddler in the back,
leaning between the two front bucket seats, no restraint. This near
the AKO facility near the 2A intersection. A half hour
later on the highway, three preteen boys in the back of an older
stationwagon, just about hanging out the open back window, again no
belts, and at speeds exceeding the legal limit. Where's the cops when
you need one??
By the way last month I was in Pet Depot in Shrewsbury. They actually
sell a pet harness to use in the back of a pickup truck. I heard that
either the federal or some one of the states is starting legislation
prohibiting pets from riding in the back of pickup trucks. Personally,
I hope it passes.

39.16 | 800 number for FP | AWASH::SFLATLEY | | Wed Oct 14 1992 11:56 | 14 |
|
If anyone can help me with this I'd appreciate it. About a week ago
I was watching the Boston Area news and heard of a recall on Fisher
Price Carseats, models 9100, 9101 and 9103 (I think those are the
correct models.) Anyway, I did not get the 800 number to call for
information on the recall, and low and behold, after checking - our
second car seat which is a Fisher Price is a model 9101.
Did anyone out there get the Fisher Price Recall 800 number?
800 information gave me (800)432-5437 which has been busy for
the last hour...really!

We also have a 9101 and I ran into the same problem with the
800 number. I finally reached someone in their General Offices.
Here is the direct line to Fisher Price Consumer Affairs:
716-687-3949
Any Model 9101 seat manufactured between 2/8/91 and 1/24/92 needs a new
connector bar. They will mail you a new one (takes about 7-10 days
to arrive).
I don't know what the trouble was with the other models.

39.19 | Can't get thru to Fisher Price | CSTEAM::WRIGHT | | Tue Oct 20 1992 13:35 | 11 |
| I just can't get through to Fisher Price. I've tried
1-800-432-5437, which was given on our local news last week,
and I've tried 1-800-332-3457, which was given on a different
news channel this week. Both have been constantly busy. I've
been trying for days. I also tried the 716-687-3949, which was
given in a previous note, but that got me to someone's private
voicemail.
Anyone have any other ideas?

39.21 | I USED THE DIRECT LINE | GRIND::SFLATLEY | | Wed Oct 21 1992 16:51 | 15 |
| I had the same problem and finally called the direct number
716-687-3949. It does ring at a woman's desk, her first name
is Elaine I think. She was very helpful and told me what info
I needed off the carseat (A sticker on the back of the seat indicates
manufacture date, the format is CS MM/DD/YY.) They need this
information to identify what modifications are required.
Since I didn't have that with me at the time, she arranged to have
someone from her office call me back the next day and they resolved
the problems.
I'd try her number again if I was you....the more calls she gets the
more likely they'll be to upgrade their 800 service.

39.22 | Century Car Seat Recall | SSGV01::CHALMERS | More power! | Fri Oct 30 1992 09:17 | 36 |
| From the 10/29/92 BOSTON GLOBE:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly one million child safety seats were ordered
recalled yesterday after tests showed the seats could jam during a
crash and make it difficult to remove a child from the vehicle.
The national Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall
involves 969,182 safety seats manufactured by the Century Products Co.
Owners were asked to contact the company to request a free repair kit
to remedy the defect.
Marion C. Blakely, the agency's administrator, said the tests showed
that the push-button latch release on certain models of the Century
safety seat can jam during a crash. She said that makes it difficult to
release the harness and shield restraining the child.
But Blakely said the problem with the latch does not affect the safety
seat's performance in a crash, and she strongly urged consumers to
continue to use the seats while awaiting arrival of the repair kit.
The safety agency said that if the latch does jam after a crash, a
child can be released from the seat by loosening the belt harness at
the front of the seat.
Or, it said, the safety belt can be unbuckled and the safety seat
removed from the vehicle with the child still in it.
The safety seat models being recalled are the Century 3000 STE-3500 STE
and Century 5000 STE-5500 produced between September 1989 through April
of 1992.
The highway safety agency said repair kits can be obtained by calling
Century's toll free number, 800-231-2755, or by writing to the Century
Products Co., 9600 Valley View Drive, Macedonia, OH, 44056.

39.34 | Safety Alert Graco Carrier Swings | ACESMK::CONLON | | Thu Nov 18 1993 10:20 | 44 |
| I just received the following product safety alert from Graco re:
certain carrier/cradle swings.
Dear Valued Consumer,
In cooperation with th US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Graco
Children's Products is voluntarily conducting a consumer notification
and retrofit program which applies to certain Carrier and Cradle Swings
manufactured between November 1991 and October 1992. Only swings with
detachable carrier seats are affected by this alert.
In the fully reclined position, infants have pushed themselves up and
over the back of the seat. Five infants have fallen backward out of
the swing onto the floor, and one was found unconcious suspended upside
down. No permanent injuries resulted.
Please use this checklist to determine if your swing model needs the
retrofit kit. The model number and serial number are located on the
sticker underneath the top bar of the swing.
- Models involved are 1300, 1301, 1310, 343-1723, 1530, 1501, 1830,
1801, 50294, 50340, 343-2788.
- Serial numbers involved are 110191 (november 1, 1991)
through 103192 (October 31, 1992).
- The carrier seat handle adjusts to three positions, as shown in
the graphic below.
{ graphic shows 2 seats, one with a handle with 2 positions, one
seat with three handle positions}
If your carrier has the third recline position, please call
1-800-217-7822 for your free retrofit kit, or write to Customer
Affairs, Graco Childrens Products, Inc. PO Box 100, Elverson, PA 19520.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the retrofit program, but
are sure that you will agree that your child's safety is the most
important consideration.
Sincerely,

since this is in effect, a recall.
The Bay (a very large Canadian Department Store chain) has just

The reason is that the eyes may come off and pose a choking danger
to small kids. Although no incidences have been reported, they're
doing this to be on the safe side (good for them!).

39.36 | Pontiac seatbelt buckle recall | LEDS::TRIPP | | Mon Jan 24 1994 09:42 | 14 |
| I just received the SECOND recall for my car's seatbelts. OK not
directly a parenting issue, EXCEPT that so many of us depend on the
seatbelts for keeping kids, carseats and parents safe.
It is from Pontiac, I have a 1988 LeMans model. My suggestion is to
check with your dealership. This may affect other models perhaps any
that were manufactured outside of the US, mine was made in Korea.
It said that seatbelt buckles could fail without any prior warning. I
have personaly had a buckle fail within the first 30 days I owned it,
have had the recall work on the buckles done once already, and I guess
I'm off to spend another morning at a dealership for round two!

seat in the box and UPS will pick it up.
Just call the 1-800 number that is on the car seat and give them the
model number. It's easy as that.

39.38 | liquid medicine recall, times 3 kinds! | LEDS::TRIPP | | Mon Apr 04 1994 17:56 | 13 |
| I heard on the news last Thursday the three liquid anitbiotics are
being recalled. This is due to a small plastic cap that was found in
them, on two separate incidents.
I am sure of two of them:
KEFLEX and CECLOR, don't remember the third.
You are instructed to check very closely when pouring this into
whatever you use (syringe or cup) due to a possible choking hazard. If
you have questions to bring it back to your pharmacy.
(nice, I just finished a round of ceclor with AJ!!)

CRAYONS
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission on
Tuesday recalled 11 brands of crayons imported from China --
including one brand sold by the Toys `R' Us chain -- because they
contain lead. The CPSC said some brands ``contain enough lead to
present a lead poisoning hazard to young children who might eat or
chew on the crayons.'' They are ``121 Jumbo Crayons'' and ``Safe 48
Non-Toxic I'm a Toys `R' Us Kid! Crayons,'' distributed by Concord
Enterprises of Los Angeles; and ``12 Crayons Glory'' and ``18
Crayons That Paint,'' distributed by Glory Stationery Manufacturing

39.42 | Double/Single Bunk Bed recall | CLOUD9::WEIER | Patty, DTN 381-0877 | Mon Apr 11 1994 09:55 | 15 |
| I noticed a recall on some Bunk Beds when I was in Montgomery Ward this
weekend.
The recall is on the bunks that have tubular metal frames, that have a
double bed on the bottom, and a single on top. The manufacturing date
was around 1991. If your bunk has a fifth leg under the double bed,
then you should be all set. If not, then you should check the welds on
the rest of the bed to make sure they still appear "good". I don't
know the rest of the details - I'll be back in there Thursday and will
get the rest of the info. Basically what's happening is that the
weight of the bottom bed, without the fifth leg, stresses the rest of
the frame, and it snaps apart at one of the welds. Particularly
dangerous if it's one of the welds for the top bed.

Gerber recording says:
- only NUK pacifiers are affected
- in rare instances the pacifier could separate and cause a choking hazard
- no injuries have been reported
- should throw all current ones away
Call 800-4-gerber or 800-443-7237 for replacements - it has been tough to get
through - I"m still trying.
The new US product on the market has a "new" label and has an orange starburst

I suspected, based on the wording in the form letter that accompanied

that the coupon is good for a pacifier or anything else Gerber makes

position with the new pacifier to replace all the pacifiers that are
out there...

39.53 | Where to find Size 3 (18months - 3yrs) | LEDZEP::TERNULLO | | Tue Nov 22 1994 14:38 | 15 |

I've received my coupons from Gerber and I've found pacifiers
in grocery stores, dept. stores, etc. But I can't find any in the
size I now need.
Kristen is 18months old now, so my old pacifiers where size 2
(6-18months) But I really need to find size 3 (18months-3yrs)
for her. In all the places I've been I only see size 1 and 2.
Can anyone tell me where to find size 3? My next step is to
ask the manager of some store if they can be ordered. I've tried
to call Gerber (and will continue) but the line has been busy.
thanks,

6. Chrysler bows to pressure, announces recall
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Under fire, Chrysler said last week it will
conduct an owner service action to replace rear liftgate latches
on all 1984-1994 Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler
Town & Country minivans. The company expects its move will
put an end to an 18-month investigation into alleged openings
of rear liftgate latches by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), though it notes NHTSA never concluded
there was a defect with the latches. Chrysler has been under even
more pressure in the last week or so for what was rumored to be
a secret recall. The automaker said the rumor was completely
false, however.

HIGHCHAIR RECALL
NBC News reported earlier this week (in between all the OJ coverage)
that there may be a serious defect in the "Playskool 1-2-3" highchair.
Reporter Asa Aarons told viewers that the seat can collapse while your
child is sitting in it. A Long Island parent had the problem occur with
three different chairs purchased.
Playskool acknowledges that, "some consumers have reported cracks in
the leg's pivot points which could cause the chair to slide to the
floor." The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Hasbro (Playskool's
parent company) have now issued a recall or repair warning. Hasbro is
distributing free reinforcing straps to back up the present system. If
you have a cracked chair, return it. If you have a chair that isn't
cracked, call the company (800 752-9755) for a free "1-2-3 Highchair
Repair Kit."
During NBC's Thursday update on the story, it was reported that the
chair had once received an award from the Consumer Product Safety
Commission for being "a breakthrough in child safety." Asa Aarons
further reported that CPSC and Playskool are aware of 10 injuries from
the highchair (mostly minor) except for 1 that resulted in a
concussion. Also, as of Thursday, only a small fraction of the chairs
on the market have been returned.

| There's a recall of Century car seats, models 3000 STE, 3500 STE, 5000
STE and 5500 STE. I called the 800 number *800-231-2755* and the
models effected have a model number that begin with 43 or 44 and the
last 4 digits (or lot numbers) are 8909 through 9204.
The car seat could unbuckle if there is an accident, so check your
century carseat and call the 800 number if you have any questions!!!

| Fisher Price recall on car seats.
I heard this on the radio, though I didn't call about (and don't have
an 800 number, there's probably one in an earlier reply to this note).
Apparently the instructions for one of their carseats is reversed! It
says that a child under 20 lbs should face forward and a child over 20
lbs should face the rear of the car! Only the instructions are
included on the recall.

39.68 | The cradle used to rock the other way... | SOLVIT::BENZ | | Tue Aug 06 1996 10:20 | 9 |
| I think the recall was made because the cradle part of the swing
rocked the baby head to feet, instead of side by side...and there
were problems with that (not sure what the problems were!). The
newer models rock the baby side to side...and I'm with you -
I thought it was great! We used it a bit when my daughter was
a newborn. I especially like the fact that the cradle/chair is
easily detached and can be carried around the house....
