Things to make you're Easter bright and gay.

There's an orchid for your Mommy
And an Easter bonnet too.

35.5 | nursery rhymes/songs to sing | ASABET::MINISANDRAM | | Fri Jul 17 1992 12:56 | 7 |
| How about some nursery rhymes. I don't know any "American" nursery
rhymes or songs to sing to my daughter. Can any of you think of
putting all the songs that you would sing to your kid or baby.
Anyone know of this song...
Intsy-Wintsy spider..... (I hope I have spelled it right!!!)

35.6 | I hope my words are right! | NIMBUS::HARRISON | Icecreamoholic | Fri Jul 17 1992 13:10 | 14 |
| Eantsy Weantsy spider (sp?)
I think that these are the words. Our 7 month old son ADORES this. No
matter what his mood, this is guaranteed to bring a smile to his face.
The eantsy weantsy spider went up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain.
And, the eantsy weantsy spider went up the spout again.
There are hand motions that go with this as well. Just use your
imagination. The more animated, the more they enjoy it.

Your local library (I would hope!) should have several children's books
filled with nursery rhymes and children's songs. Our library (and I
understand most libraries today do) offer children's songs on CD's and
cassette tapes (and flame on me!, but we have copied from them) ...
And you can always purchase these from your local bookstore, too.
Raffi, Sharon Braun (sp?), and Disney have some EXCELLENT tapes/CD's. You
can also get some of the popular musicals (e.g. Mary Poppins, etc.) on tape/CD.
And dust off some of those old Peter, Paul and Mary records ... they are
great! (Puff the Magic Dragon, It's Rainin'/It's Pouring, The Mystical Toy
... to name but a few!). BTW: the words to the Raffi songs are printed
inside the tape/CD cover!
There are also MANY musical children's videos. ViewMaster puts out a
12-tape collection which I highly recommend - each has a theme: Day at Camp,
A Day at the Zoo, Cars, Boats and Trains, A Day at the Circus, Old MacDonald's
Farm, Silly Songs, something about Sleeptime ... they are wonderfully
entertaining for ALL AGES (but geared towards kids). Raffi, Sharon Braun,
Golden Books, Sesame Street ... and others ... have some good videos, too.
We just added two Barney tapes to Julianne's collection. (You could video tape
some of the daily Barney TV shows, too.)
One of the best toys we ever bought Juli was her Fisher Price cassette
recorder ... I can't begin to count the number of batteries we have expired
to date! ... or the number of times she has dropped it, stomped on it,
thrown it down the stairs ... brutalized this poor recorder ... and it still
plays and plays very well, too.
GEEESSSH, I'll be singing "Puff the Magic Dragon, lives by the sea ... and
frolics in the autumn mist ...." all afternoon!
And don't forget, these cassettes are great for car rides!!

Juli comes home from daycare singing the cutest songs ... just the other
day she came home dancing to:
Red and Orange, Green and Blue
Shining Yellow, Purple, too
All these colors that we know
Live within the Rainbow! (as she motions her hand like a rainbow!)
There are many "hand" (motion) songs, to name a few:
Where is Thumbkin?
Itsy, Bitsy Spider
Patty Cake
Five Little Ducks
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
Knick-Knack, Patty-Wack
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Hookey Pookey
Here We Go 'Round the Mullberry Bush
London Bridge
If You're Happy and You Know It ...
The Wheels on the Bus
Boom, Boom Ain't It Great to Be Crazy
Do Your Ears Hang Low?
Rig a Jig Jig
This Little Light of Mine
The More We Get Together
When the Saints Go Marchin' In
I probably have the "printed" words to most of the songs/rhymes ... so contact
me "offline", if need be.

| There was a song we used to sing in Camp Fire Girls about a
very skinny girl named Alice. I can only remeber bits and pieces:
Alice, with legs like toothpicks
and a neck like a giraffe
Then there was something about pulling out the plug and then:
Oh my goodness, bless my soul
There goes Alice down the hole
And that's about it!!! I've looked through various books and have
yet to find this anywhere. Anyone heard of this one??

35.23 | Girl Scout song?? | ICS::NELSONK | | Thu Sep 24 1992 12:31 | 12 |
| My oldest sister was in Girl Scouts, and they used to sing a
song that went like this:
Today is Monday, today is Monday
Monday hasenpfeffer, da-da-da-da-da-da.
Anyway, it went all through the week with sort of a "what's for
dinner" theme. We used to rock back and forth on my mother's
old gray sofa (called a "couch" back home :-)) and sing this.
Does any former Scout remember the words? I'd love to teach
it to my kids.

I have a girl scout song that's haunted me for years .
What I remember of it was
Does he love me
Does he not
Tell me Daisy do
Candles on a birthday cake
Blow them out and your wish will come true
Santa Claus at Christmas time
Mom and Dad love me
Ta dum, ta dum
Oh to be a child again
Oaks from acorns grew
One and One made two
I belived it all
Didn't you?

35.25 | SEEKING MORE.... | GENRAL::MARZULLA | | Mon Sep 28 1992 16:20 | 22 |
| I was a Girl Scout but don't recall the songs that you two mentioned. BUT -
I have a request of my own. We used to play a game during camping trips where
you take a package and wrap it with bunches of paper tying it with string and
using bunches of tape. It contained a price inside. Everyone sat in a circle.
In the middle of the circle was the package, a large sweatshirt, scarf, hat and
mittens. One of the leaders took the top of a cooking pan, held it upside down
with two dice in it. They started somewhere in the circle with the first person
rolling the dice. One roll each. The first person to get doubles, ran to the
middle of the circle, put on the sweatshirt, scarf, hat and mittens then
proceeded to start undoing the package. While they were dressing, the leader
continued going around in the circle until the next person got doubles. This
person would run to the middle. The person that was in the middle then had to
stop undoing the package, had to pull everything off and the "new" person then
had to dress and start taking a crack at undoing the package. This continues
like this and the person to reach the prize first wins!
Now I am missing something because when trying to play it with some kids, there
was mass confusion about whereas the new person to get doubles was literally
ripping the clothes off the person in the middle and I don't remember it going
that way.
Can anyone help?

| We used to sing this at Y Camp where I was a counsellor. I am not sure
of the order but it was something like
Monday washday
Tuesday string beans
Wednesday roast beef
Thursday hasenpfeffer
Friday payday
Saturday ? (can't remember)
Sunday churchday
The verse went:
Today is Monday
Today is Monday
Monday washday
Is everybody happy?
We wish the same to you.
The "Monday washday", etc. were repeated as each verse was added.
We had seven tables in the dining room and each table would get assigned a
day. When the line for your table came up, the whole table would stand
and sing it out. The favorite day was Thursday when that table would yell
out "HASENPFEFFER". They liked that word :-)

I'll try to listen to it tonight. It's driving me crazy now to try to

I think it goes like this:
The skies opened up and it started to rain
The unicorns were splashing, playing silly games
"Close the doors," said Noah, "the rain is pouring in"
Oh those silly unicorns.

35.57 | Sesamie Street Silly songs tape | LEDS::TRIPP | | Thu Feb 24 1994 10:21 | 16 |
| I got "hooked" by my own devices this year. I was Christmas shopping
at Walmart and found a Sesamie Street tape with "silly songs" on it.
It's a great hit both at home, and on AJ's walkman while riding in the
car.
There are many of the songs mentioned in this string, plus one I can't
remember too much of, but I do remember the Three stooges did a version
of it once. Goes something like
B-I BO, D-I DO, B-I BIPPY OH BO BO BO, it's a sort of a spelling song.
Geeze, I swiped the kid's walkman to listen to the weather at work
today, now I wish I had taken that tape too!
Plus a lot of the real classic cute kids songs.

Two Little Duckies I once Knew
A fat one, skinny one, there were two
And the little ducky with the feathers on his back,
He led the others with a Quack Quack Quack.
Down to the river they would go,
Wibble, Wobble, Wibble, Wobble, to and Fro
And the little ducky with the feathers on his back,
He led the others with a Quack Quack Quack.
-> I can't think of any song that would help with the tune
on this one. Maybe someone else can?
-> I flap Lauren's arms up and down and side by side when
doing this and she loves it!

35.60 | I love silly songs tape | LEDS::TRIPP | | Fri Apr 22 1994 16:22 | 27 |
| re the last....
This song is on the Playschool tape I reference a couple back, and also
admitted to liking in ".113 of you know you're a parent when" note.
AJ and I have gotten some strange looks in the car, as he act out the
hand motions of (hands spread wide) Fat one, (had held close) skinny
ones, I always thought it was saying "bare ones too" not "there were
two. I think it's called "three little ducks" (that I once knew) not
Two. I can check the tape since it's in the car.
We do hand motions of hands together in a sort of forward waving motion
for the "wibble wobble" part. and he puts his hands behind his back in
a wing motion when it says "the feather on his back", and we finally
get some strange looks from passers by when he makes a duck bill by
putting his hands by his mouth, opening a closing his hands in a duck
bill motion while signing "quack quack quack".
We have had lots of fun with the tape, lots of real cute silly things
on this tape. The other one is a spelling song, they describe it as
"swinging the vowels against the consinents" as in A,E, I, O, U,
begin with B, and say B-A BA, B-E BE, B-I BICKY BI, B-0 BO, B-U BU,
etc. It just sort of grows on us. I just like this special time we
spend together in the car!

| I am looking to see if anyone has the words to a song I heard on My

The words were something like, "there's always another rainbow,
even when you (think) reached the end of the Rainbow.
Even if someone happened to tape it, I'd like to see if I can write
down the words. Any thing with Rainbow in it, has a special meaning to
me, and the group of teen girls I advise.

Hush Little Baby Don't Say a Word
Mama's gonna buy you a mocking bird
If that mocking bird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring
If that diamond ring turns brass
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass
If that looking glass gets broke
Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat,
If that billy goat won't pull
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull,
If that cart and bull turn over
Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover,
If that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart,
If that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the cutest little baby in town
I changed Papa to Mama because I'm Mama and I'd rather sing it
with me in the song, I suppose it doesn't matter and my husband
sings it with Papa. Anyway, there are probably other version,
but this is the one I know, I've really enjoyed singing it to
my daughter before bedtime, I get board with Rock-a-bye Baby
every night.(but it's her favorite).
Happy Singing!

| I remember some of the 'Sippin Cider' song. It's one of those songs
where the leader sings a line and the others repeat it. This happens
for four lines, then the whole verse is sung by everyone.
Here's the first verse.
The prettiest girl
The prettiest girl
I ever saw
I ever saw
Was sippin' ci
Was sippin' ci
Der through a straw.
Der through a straw.
The prettiest girl I ever saw,
Was sippin' cider through a straw!
Here's the last verse.
Now twenty-nine kids
Now twenty-nine kids
All call me Paw
All call me Paw
From sippin' ci
From sippin' ci
Der through a straw.
Der through a straw.
Now twenty-nine kids all call me Paw,
From sippin' cider through a straw!
The verses in between are about the guy asking the girl to
teach him how to sip cider through a straw, him learning,
and them sipping together. I can't remember them though!
I don't think this song has anything about bugs or worms
though, so it might be the wrong one altogether!

I partly recall one verse a little different
from "lip to lip" -- something more along the lines
of "sippin cider through his teeth". (And
we'd all go "EEEEuuuuuwwwww" !!! :-) :-)
Another song to the same tune had to do with being
chased by "the biggest bear I ever saw". I only recall
the one verse which comes after the singer attempts to jump
to a high tree branch:
Now don't you fret
And don't you frown
'Cause I hit that branch
On the way back down.
Anybody know the rest of that one??

35.101 | The bear version | SUPER::HARRIS | | Mon Jul 17 1995 12:49 | 51 |
| I sing this to Andy all of the time...
Out in the woods,
A way out there,
One day I spied
A great big bear...
He looked at me.
I looked at him.
He sized up me.
I sized up him...
He said to me,
"Why don't you run?
I see you ain't
Got any gun"...
I said to him,
"That's a good idea.
So come on feet,
Let's get out of here".
And so I ran
Away from there
But right behind
me was that bear...
What's that I see
Ahead of me!
Oh my! Oh me!
It's a great big tree...
And so I jumped
Into the air
But I missed that branch
A way up there...
Now don't you fret
And don't you frown
Cuz I caught that branch
One the way back down...
That's all there is
There ain't no more
Unless I see
That bear once more.
(Actually, I have to admit that we change the words just slightly..
I substitute the words "you ain't got any gun" for "that I am not much fun")

this but it was a fun find for us this weekend.
We have been introducing Lauren, 3.5, to games

The concept is simple, you take turns putting
beans into a little pot. When the pot gets off
balance it spills into a tray. We all had lots of
laughs and fun.
It cost between $5-6.

There's this chorus that goes "Little Bunny Fufu / hopping through the forest /
picking up the field mice / and bopping them on the head" (to the tune of "Down
by the station, early in the morning"). After the first round of the chorus,
there's this narrative about the good fairy coming along and scolding Little
Bunny FuFu, and telling him that she'll give him three chances, and if he
doesn't behave, she'll turn him into a goon. Chorus again; good fairy appears
and tells him he only has two more chances; chorus; one more chance; chorus;
good fairy appears and turns him into a goon.

Tell me about it... We bought an official Ernie rubber ducky (Sesame Street
imprimatur), but it does not make noise. Those noise-making bath toys tend to
get filled with water and get moldy inside, so I suppose there's a good reason,
but still, it's hard to emulate the antics of the one on the screen without the
noise.

Would you like to swing on a star?

And be better off than you are..
Or...would you rather be a ..... pig?
A pig is an animal with dirt on his face.
His shoes are a terrible disgrace.
He's ?????? ????? when he eats his food;
He's ?????? ????? and extremely rude.
So, if you don't care a feather or a fig..
You may grow up to be a pig.
Chorus (repeats, and changes animal names each time)
Or would you rather be a .. mule?
A mule is an animal with long funny ears;
He kicks up at everything he hears.
He's ??????
He's just plain stupid (?) with a stubborn streak.
So, if you don't ??????? school (?)
You may grow up to be a mule.
Chorus ( next animal ???)
End chorus:
All the monkeys aren't in the zoo;
Every day you meet quite a few.
So, you see it's all up to you;
You can be better than you are.....
You could be swinging on a star.

song that Kermit the Frog sings in the Muppet Movie?
I think it's the 1st movie (vs. Muppets take Manhattan).
He's sitting in a swamp playing a guitar and Dom DeLuise,
playing a Hollywood agent, comes by in a canoe to recruit him to be a star....
Starts out like this (I think, probably mixing verses here)...
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what's on the other side?
Rainbows are memories, sweet dream illusions,
rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it, | **???
I know they're wrong wait and see. | **???
One day we'll find it the rainbow connection, the
lovers, the dreamers and me.
Who said that every wish, would be heard and answered,
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it, (***???)
look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us star gazing, and what
do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the

>> Have you been half asleep, and have you hear voices?
>> I've heard them calling my name.
Have you been half asleep, and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is it the soft voice that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
There's something that I'm supposed to see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lover, the dreamer and me.
ladada....
...I think the end of the last verse is the same as the end of the
first verse and you do the ladada thing to finish it off. It's pretty
close anyways...

the nursery rhymes we had.....
Rock a bye baby on the tree top
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall.....
I think some of this stuff is put together without thought about the
content - the rhyme potential seems to be important.

That's for sure, I used to know a lot that we started changing
the words or selves to make it sound grosser or worse! It seemed like
fun back then for some reason. Like,,,
Old gramma she ain't what she used to be,
Ain't what she used to be.
Old gramma she ain't what she used to be,
Walking up the Delaware, eating up her underwear!
It's really not funny, but we used to love singing it!

35.155 | It was fun to sing... | STAR::RMCDONOUGH | | Mon Jun 03 1996 15:09 | 16 |
| re:.151
It's not a valuable ditty, it was just fun to sing as a kid.
Definitely not for toddlers, but pretty harmless for school aged kids
and they have fun singing them. We were taught all kinds of
fun/funny/pointless/nonvaluable songs around the campfire at overnight
camp and in scouts. No foul language, but lots of stuff that made
adults cringe (which is probably why we liked them so much). There was
always at least 1 adult that liked them...they taught us (I know, that
doesnt make it right). I think some of the Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes
are much worse than of the odd/gross/strange songs we learned as kids
(more violent too).
Sorry...off soapbox now...

| I personally don't see anything wrong with singing silly songs. Being silly is
part of being a kid! And I happen to be one of those adults who sings
these silly songs right along with the kids. I've even been the one
to teach my son many of them(He's 5 1/2) He thinks it's great when Mom is silly
too. I try not to take these things so seriously .I remember singing the
bumblebee song as a kid and never once was I tempted to actually grab a bee
and squish it! It was just fun to sing. That is the "value" of these
songs, in my opinion - sincging them with my kids gives us the chance to
be silly together. I enjoy it and so do they! I'll often change the
words to songs just to be silly and make them laugh - they love it!
(I've got some GREAT words to Hush Little Baby that just cracks my 2 1/2
year old up!!) Anyway - just my .02 cents worth. :-)

my experience. I lead Jr. Girl Scouts and they are giggly monsters,
not as bad as they were as brownies, but.....
We do get into a fair amount of silliness. to me there is nothing
sadder than meeting up with the girls who won't laugh, dance, play
games, as it is beneath an aquired adult veneer.

place a high value on satire/silliness/gross-but-funny-stuff.
I just don't find *this particular* song to be comically redeeming.

Quite a few of them weren't written for children in the first place.
"Ring Around the Rosey" is about the Black Death
"Pop Goes the Weasel" is about a cobbler [or tailor] who drinks up all
money [and more besides]
"Bessie Bell" is about a starving child at the church-gate
"Jack Spratt" and "Peter, Pumpkin Eater" have grim origins.
and then, of course, there's "Lizzie Borden ..."
I think children picked them up because they are clever, easy to sing,
and a tad gruesome.

Here's our version of the Bumble Bee song
(Gently cup hands together)
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so-proud-of-me
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee
Ouch! He stung me!
(Squish hands repeatedly)
I'm squishing up my baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so-proud-of-me
I'm squishing up my baby bumblebee
Ewwwww - what a mess!
(wipe-clap hands together)
I'm wiping off my baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so-proud-of-me
I'm wiping off my baby bumblebee
(Look at floor) Uh OH!
(Pretend to be sweeping w/ a broom)
I'm sweeping up my baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so-proud-of-me
I'm sweeping up my baby bumblebee
There! All clean!
There's no more baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so-proud-of-me
There's no more baby bumblebee
....but my hand still hurts!
I liked this little ditty (and this version of it!) because it follows
a logical sequence of events .... and the kids love the motions, so
what the heck!!
After all - almost every one likes Ring around the Rosey, and that's
about the black plague (or black death - assuming they're different)!
Ring around the rosey (disease noted by a red ring - not
sure where)
Pocketful of posies (posies were believed to help ward it
off)
Ashes ashes (they burned the dead, to prevent the spread of
disease)
We all fall down (everyone was 'dropping dead')
How's that for a cheery kid song?? I'd rather squish a bumblebee and
let mom get mad!! (-;

Since day one when Kathleen was born, I would rock her and hum the

sure those versus are 100%. Now that she is a year old, as soon as I
sit in the rocking chair with her (I like to have a moment or two of

again until I start up again. I would at least like to be able to hum

Herring boxes without topses
Sandals were for Clementine
CHORUS
Drove she ducklings to the water
Every morning just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter
Fell into the foaming brine.
CHORUS
Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles soft and fine,
But alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.
