375.0. "Cold River/Mohawk State Forest? (Mass)" by GNUVAX::QUIRIY (Cyanide or champagne?) Mon Jun 08 1992 12:01

I searched all notes and replies for "mohawk" and didn't find anything.
Does anyone here know about unofficial skinny dipping in the Cold River
(in Charlemont/Florida/Savoy, MA)? The Cold River eventually feeds into
    (I believe) the Deerfield River.

A coworker of mine was telling me about Mohawk State Forest, and how
it's an all round neat place, and the Cold River, which runs through
the state forest. Just before the entrance to the state forest, there
is a turn out, with space for about 10 cars. Climb over the guardrail
and take one of several paths down to the river. He (the coworker)
said this is a clothing optional river, or at least one bit of it is.
If you continue west along route 2, the road follows alongside the
river for quite a distance; there are several turnouts.

When I went there today, there were some people on the river, i.e.,
several people had staked out their own rock, but all were clothed.
This is a very nice river, with many big rocks for sitting and sunning.

    Anyone know anything?

I used to go there alot, although I havn't been in the past 2 summers.
    I don't think I've ever seen it less than 50/50 (nude/clothed).
There are usually more nudes, so I'm suppried to hear this. Maybe
    something happend.

In issue 26 (Spring 1988), _The Event_ had a couple of pages of assorted
western Mass site listings. Here's one of them:

	Mohawk Trail State Forest

Famous (at least in these parts) for the Whirleys or
whirley baths. Rt. 2 in Charlemont. Naturism allowed
along the water chutes and pool on Rt. 2.

No, I don't necessarily think anything "happened". It was a very wuiet
weekend in that part of the state, all around; I didn't see many people
in my travels, and when I stopped to talk to the employee at the hut in
the entrance to the state park, he said it was very quiet there that
weekend. I'll be back there, I'm sure, it's a really nice place.
