294.0. "Naturism changes your view of the world" by NOVA::WASSERMAN (Deb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863) Thu Feb 07 1991 09:53

My husband and I were recently watching the PBS show "Making Sense of
the Sixties". There was some discussion with people who had been
involved with drugs in the 60's, LSD in particular, who said that
after having taken LSD, their way of looking at the world was forever
    changed.

My husband mentioned that, for him, nude beaches (and motorcycles, but
that's a topic for another conference!) were his "LSD". That after
having been to a nude beach (or other C/O place), his way of looking at
things will never be the same.

I thought that was really true. Later in the show, they talked about
Woodstock and showed some films of people swimming nude there. I
noticed that before I became involved in naturism, I probably would
have giggled at this film, but my reaction today was "gee, there's a
bunch of people going swimming. It must have been hot there". It
    looked completely normal to me!

I too saw "Making Sense of the Sixties".

Considering all of our current social, economic and environmental
problems, I sure wish that a lot more of the "activist" and
"concern" attitude had not died with that decade.

From seeing the same documentary, the late '80's/early '90's
look & feel more like the late '50's.

The nude swim sequences looked like great fun. I would have
loved to had been a part of it (of couse I was only 10 years
    old then).

I trace my interest in Naturism back to those scenes in Woodstock. While
it only took me about 20 years to turn that initial interest into action
I'm glad the seed was planted.

294.4What we teach our kidsCSC32::K_JOHNSONIn persuit of ExcellenceWed Feb 13 1991 21:0314

I remember watching that documentary amoung friends who have children,
and who do not participate in naturist/nudist lifestyle/events.
One thing that struck me was their little six year old girl's
exclamation at that swimming scene: "Momma, those people are NAKED!"
This while other children of similiar age (whose parents DO participate
in said activities/lifestyle) appeared to see (of course) no
significance in the sight. Even that little girl's parents seemed
somewhat uncomfortable (probably more with their little girl's
observation then with the brief bit of nudity).

Interesting how easily we perpetulate our beliefs/viewpoints/lifestyles
    in our children!

  re. .5

I know this isn't soapbox, but .. just a quick reply on the last
   note.

I can understand why someone who spent their younger years on drugs
could be so much against them in their older years.

Nude is a different story, .. I think once a naturist, probably always
a naturist! (I don't know anyone who has converted back to not being one
   ... do you?)

I haven't met any people who once having been naturists turn against
it. But I have met many folks who say " Ya I did the nude beach
years ago, but its too much hassel to bother any more." " I just as
soon go to the textile beach." Or words to that effect.

294.8Yeah, They DO drop out!38609::WILSONMon Jul 29 1991 13:579
Actually, a number of chldren of active naturists drop out when they
become adults. They were raised as nudists/naturists, but get out of
the scene. (This based on a number of conversations I had during the
three years that I was a member at Solair.)

They may visit Mom and Dad at the Camp, occasionally, but do not
    continue to be Active nudists.

I have many theories about what happened in the sixties. I think what made them
possible was the fact that the baby boom was reaching an idealistic age. They
saw it first as they wanted it to be and later how it actually was. I am a
bit disappointed that they apparently lost sight of their ideals. My mind reels
when I consider how many people who took drugs in the sixties are gung ho on
the drug war thing. Obviously all these people must have vanished from the
planet, got MESSED up for life, or both.

The baby boom is still of the opinion that it can get what it wants just by
demanding it. They're in congress writing laws banning anything that offends
them. The moral to this story? Don't confuse getting older with growing up.

The squeeky wheels get the grease.

294.9Drop outs do happen, I know some.CSC32::D_ROYERWine, wisdom and women for me!Wed Aug 28 1991 14:2415
    Yep,

I know a Lady in Germany, who with her husband belonged to the FFK or
FKK?? in Karlsruhe, the children did go, but when they married they no
    longer were interested.

She wanted my wife and I to go with her as she had no transportation,
and that indicated the children would not go. I never asked for more
    details from her sons.

I think it is all in a persons head, and being raised in a clothing
free environment may not be a thing that will continue with you as
an adult... You reach your own point of view.
