291.0. "Skimpy or none? Which takes more courage?" by SUBSYS::NEUMYER (sun your buns) Tue Jan 29 1991 13:08

While browsing thru the rec_nude file, I ran across a question in
one of the topics. The general theme of the question was : If you like to
go nude just because it feels good, then why would you go to a place where
there are other nude people, such as a beach?

One reply was that it is partly because of feeling 'safe' in numbers
of people doing the same thing as you. Also that this way you are not
different from the majority.

This got me to thinking that this would contribute to the reasons
that I would go to a nude or CO beach. But what about the times that the
beach is textile only and you have to wear something and what you wear is
not the 'normal' swimwear, such as a thong. At this beach you might be the
only one attired this way.

Does it take more conviction to wear 'non-normal' fashion at the
textile beach or 'normal' fashion (none) at the nude/CO beach. This
question is probable easy for the active naturist/nuder but how about those
that haven't yet tried either.

291.1KAOFS::D_BIGELOWIt's really quite *simple* actually...Tue Jan 29 1991 17:5428
Well... in my opinion, it is much easier for me to go totally nude, at
a nude beach, then to wear something "skimpy" at a textile beach.

If I'm at a nude beach, I become one of the many there, strip and feel
like I'm part of the crowd. No problem. But if I'm at a textile
beach, I find myself uncomfortable wearing something very small. I
tried this one time, wore a bathing suit that was almost like a thong
(but had a bit more covering), and I got stares from everyone. Not
just the women either, but the guys who wear swimsuits that look like
giant boxer shorts. In fact, one of them yelled at me "Hey, wouldn't
that thing look better on your girlfriend" ? While I was still within
the boundaries of the law, it did make me feel very uncofortable.
With the women at the beach, it was quite a different story. I passed
a few women who made a point of pointing me out to their friends, but
I'm not sure why. Women on the other hand, can seemingly get away with
wearing next to nothing with no problem at all. They aren't hassled
by other women, and the men stare at them with their mouths dropped
open to their knees. While I admit that I like to look as much as
anyone else, this behaviour bothers me, since it's obvious the guys see
the women as merely sex objects. (The guys look at me and think I'm
    Crazy!).

To make a longer story shorter, I feel more comfortable in the buff at
a nude beach, where everyone else is nude too. I can just be myself
and enjoy the company of likeminded people without any hassles.

I definitely find it easier to go nude at a nude beach. There's no denying
safety in numbers. At textile beaches I wear a brief-type suit- I think I
would feel uncomfortable in a thong (both physically and psychologically).
I don't mind being unconventional, but I participate in nudity for my own
enjoyment, not to make a statement or bend social mores.

As do I, however by doing something for your own enjoyment sometimes is
unconventional. When I wear a thong to a beach, it is because I want to
get as much of a tan as possible. It doesn't change the fact that it
    could cause some uncomfortable feelings.
