266.0. "Suppression on the North Carolina Outer banks" by MOIRA::FAIMAN (light upon the figured leaf) Mon Aug 27 1990 09:39

This article appeared in the August 7, 1990 edition of the Charlotte
Observer. I thought it might be of interest to you and the Naturism Noters.
Though I do not practice nudism/naturism, I think the article offers a sad
commentary on exercise of personal freedom. If you have ever been to the
Hatteras and Ocracoke areas, you know it's pretty isolated. It escapes me as
to why the folks can't get along and coexist. I vacationed there earlier in
the spring, and if I had come across these folks, I would have simply respected
their privacy to enjoy the beach and found another spot. It's not that big
a deal.
Anyway, just thought I would pass this along.
Regards,

The Headline for this article was:
Nudists getting STUNG by more than Insects
Hatteras - The National Park Service is putting a stop to nude
sunbathing along secluded beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks.
Rangers have issued about 20 indecent-exposure tickets since
spring, said Lawrence Rousch, chief ranger of the Park Service's Cape
Hatteras group in Manteo. Complaints have increased this summer,
particularly from suited sunbathers who said they were embarassed by their
unclothed counterparts, Roush said.
Rangers, who in years past merely warned nudists, have cracked
down to keep complaints to a minimum, Roush said. The crackdown on
Hatteras and Ocracoke islands could further shrink the number of East
Coast beaches that tolerate nudism.
Authors of the "World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation" say
Hatteras Island could be cut out of the guide's second edition, due in
bookstores later this year. In its first edition, the guide describes the
Cape Hatteras National Seashore as an ideal place for the "free-spirited
to indulge," but warns nudists to "be prepared for insects."
