254.0. "POCONO VISIT: SORRY IT's OVER" by PSYCHE::SHERMAN () Wed Jun 20 1990 13:15
Had a very exciting time at Pocono Picnic Co (PPC ... aka Camp Akiba)!
Wish you were there!
If you can find READERS in Pennsylvania you will be able to see where
it was. The countryside is lovely, and the location was very nice,
indeed. With a couple of blankets the sleeping was ok. The cabins
were located well away from the party noises when the dancing continued
into the earlier hours.
I arrived in mid-afternoon on Thursday and left about the same time on
Sunday.
While my Cancer Screening Center occupied most of my time, there were
all sorts of things for the more casual visitors. The PPC provided
the entertainment. The master of ceremonies was on deck from early
morning until late in the evening. Real busy guy!
The food was great.
The people were all friendly and the kids were wonderful. I must tell
you of one incident.
A couple with two tiny tots walked into the Center while I was pasting
together and hanging signs. Both were wearing bathrobes. The little girl
was probably about 7 while her brother was about 5. Real dolls!
They stepped up to me, so I bent down real formally to shake their hands.
The older child took my hand first, followed by her brother.
Then I asked them if they would like to help me tape a sign to a tree?
I looked at the Mommie for permission. She smiled ... stepped forward,
put her hands on the bathrobe collars and slipped them off. SO: as
real Naturists the three of us, hand in hand, went to the tree and
taped the sign into place. While all the others were high, that one
was very low! But it represented a "high point" nonetheless.
I then, very formally, thanked them. Then that pretty family walked
away, waving good bye as it went.
That wasn't all. We had one heckuva thunder/rain storm a night later.
MY sign was washed off its tree! The one they helped erect was still
there inviting people into the Center. When I bumped into them, I
congratulated the children on being so clever to put the sign up so
well that it weathered the storm. They smiled a big beaming smile and
were pleased to be told.
That's why I like Naturism. It's a wonderful place for children and
adults, family or single.
There were other similarly touching moments which made me wind up
walking about a foot and a half above the ground. I will never forget
it.
If you havn't spent nearly four days with such nice people, you have
missed something. Try to make the August session. You and your family
will find it most worth while.

| Where is this place? What does it cost? When is it open (season)?!
Thank you,

| Sorry, but Stan was reporting on his visit to the Eastern Naturist Gathering
this summer. The camp that the gathering was held at, the Pocono Picnic
Company (which was known as Camp Akiba when the 1989 Gathering was held
there), is an ordinary commercial (i.e., non-nudist) camp, which was leased
by Tri-State Metro Naturists for the gathering.
I.e., you can't get there from here. (Unless a 1991 Gathering is held there.)

| Thanks, Neil. I hope the announcement will be made clearly and well in
advance if there is to be a '91 gathering.

| It was this clearly announced this year (see note 241) but
unfortunately only a few of us took part.. I went in June and in
August and it was without doubt the most fun I've ever had with my
clothes off! ;-) It has to be a highlight of anyone's Naturist
experience.. One of these days I'll do a review of it all.
I understand that TSSC has been losing money on this event because they
try to keep the prices low enough so that more people can attend. I
hope this doesn't keep them from having more of these, in fact, I'm
going to make a donation to try to keep them going. There's room for
ALL of us there, so look for the announcements next April or so...
