hi folks! It's almost vacation time for me again and I'm planning a trip to Nusa Tenggara in April. Has anyone visited any of the islands in this chain (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Alor, Timor, Sumba)? I'm somewhat familiar with Lombok, having visited many years ago, but I really don't know about beaches and/or nuding possibilities on any of the other islands. As the people are predominantly Muslim (with the exception of Flores and Lombok), I know the chances are slim. However, in other parts of Indonesia one can find beaches where, while not declared "NUDE BEACH", one can strip down without risk of insulting any inhabitants. I understand Sumba has become popular with Australian surfers (gee whiz). Perhaps our Australian friends can help? Thanks, lillian while exercising discretion and good common sense, of course 8*)

I finally made it back from Indonesia and thought I should post the results of my nude beach hunt here. I only went to two islands, Lombok and Flores, due to time constraints. While there were lots of beaches (empty ones!!!), not one was CO. Given the fact that I went during Ramadan, I wasn't feeling very brave about giving nudity a "try" on any beach in Lombok (which is Moslem). However, I did get away with wearing only a string (as did many of the other European wo/men) and the locals didn't *appear* to be bothered (as long as we stayed on the beach). I think the general attitude was "crazy tourists", but said with a smile and a shake of the head. Flores, a Catholic island, was another story entirely. Lovely beaches, but going topless was too much for the locals to handle, so I stayed covered up. I should add that, beaches aside, both islands have much to offer the hardy traveler, not the least of which is the friendliness and generosity of the people. 8*) lillian

Lillian, I plan on visiting Lombok and other Indonesia islands in a couple of years, could you tell me what guide book you used and how accurate it was? ( I guess that it was either a Lonely Planet or a Moon book ). Thanks. Paul

hi paul. i've been traveling with the Lonely Planet series exclusively for the past 10 years. make sure the book you use was published within 2 years of your trip and you can be assured that it will be pretty accurate...just stay off the beaten track i suggest we either take this off-line or you look into COMCAD::HOLIDAY_TRAVEL V1 which is now archived. at around note 250, i've gone into details about the Lonely Planet series. i used "Indonesia", The Shoestring Guide to SouthEast Asia" and "Bali and Lombok" for my latest trip. send me mail if you wish, lillian however, in certain areas, things change overnight and the quiet, unspoiled island of your dreams may have turned into the party animal from hell's paradise in less than a year 8*( |
