216.0. "HOT TUB HEAVEN" by KAOFS::D_BIGELOW (Hedonism - ahhhhhh!) Wed Jan 24 1990 15:51
Hello Everyone:
I'm not sure if this is the right place where I should enter
this note, but I thought since the majority of the notes dealt with
Phil's Hot Tub, I'd enter the article here. Mr/Mrs/Ms Moderator(s)
can decide if they wish to move it.
The following article appeared in a local paper up here in Ottawa
recently. I thought my notes friends here might be interested.
Duplicated without permission, from the Ottawa Sun.
Hot Tub Popularity Increases
The daily ritual of soaking in hot pulsating water is no longer
only a past-time for the rich or adventurous. According to
statistics from the Canadian Swimming Pool and Spa Association
(Canspa) unit sales of spas and hot tubs well exceeded 16,000
in 1987.
The reasons are many. Installing a spa in your backyard or
basement is not only inexpensive (starting at $2,500) but will
provide many, if not all of the pleasures of owning a pool. The
therapeutic value of the American Assocation, similar to Canspa
(N.S.P.I) initiated a spa benefit awareness program in conjuction
with the American Arthritis Foundation.
Sales in eastern Canada have surprisingly now surpassed the unit
sales of western Canada, which has been the stronghold of Canadian
spa and hot tub sales up until a few years ago. While
installations in western Canada have always been outdoors, most
eastern Canadian installations have been indoors -- until recent
years when there has been a dramatic shift to outside
installations -- even in colder climates. Industry experts state
that the thrill of enjoying your spa under the beauty of the star-
light nights, especially amidst a light snowfall ... is what "hot
tubbing" is all about. (They forgot to mention being nude helps!)
Spas are loved by all ages for different reasons. Children love
the bubbles and the companionship of their parents. Seniors and
athletes enjoy the therapeutic value of hydrotherapy.
A spa and a hot tub are essentially the same product -- but the
hot tub has wooden tank, wheras a spa is acrylic, or concreete.
The equipment and benefits are identical.
Spas ca be installed indoors or out, above ground, in the ground
or half and half. Smaller models require a floor area less than
4' by 5'.
Expensive alterations to your home are not necessary...most spas
can be uncrated, electrically connected, filled and enjoyed in a
matter of hours.
Ventilations fans are not absolutely necessary in indoor
installations as a floating cover retains the heat and keeps
humidity to a minimum.
Heatings costs are minimal -- can be less than $10 a month
indoors, and less than $1 per day during the winter months for
outdoor installations.
Upkeep costs are minimal -- less than $20 a month, including
chemicals.
Most spa owners use their spa each and every day. Maintenance
time is only a few minutes each week.
Most spas are available in 29" depths to go through any door,
and they come in widths that allow passage down a staircase.
Some spa purchasers can qualify for a tax deduction. Contact
your family doctor if you believe you qualify.
******************************
Of course, we all know that the major reason for purchasing
a hot tub, is so that we can invite our friends over and have a
great nude party !! Not to say that you can't have a party
without a hot tub, but is sure helps !

Darrell, You hit it right on with pricing and cost with owning a hot
tub. Per month is about $12 to $20 dollars depending on the type of
system you buy. I own an 8 man tub 36in. deep. Very little is spent on
chemicals and water as long as you keep it well monitored. In order to
keep the chemical prices down you need an ozinator (sp). The helps kill
the impurities in the tub. There are also advantages to the type of
heating system you install. I went with a 220 heating unit. With this
I dont have to heat the tub all the time, just when I use it. I use
it everynight, so it holds the temperature, and requires 1 to 2 hrs.
to heat up. If I had it to do over I would have gotten a gas unit,
they heat faster and cheaper and are only $600 more then a 220 heater.
I was told that if I was to by a 110 heater that I would have to heat
it all the time. Also if I were to have 7 or 8 people in the tub at the
same time that I would'nt be able to hold the temperature.
Your also right it saves me the trip to VV on snowy weekends when I'm
to lazy to travel. Parties also, nice way to meet the people you work
with. We have met some very nice people here at Digital.
If you ever get to COLO. look me up, tubs open.

216.2 | Reid's Sauna | USWAV1::REID | | Mon Jan 29 1990 16:36 | 19 |
| Another variation on the hot tub theme is the Sauna. My wife and I
looked into a hot tub but did not want to have all that water sitting
in our house. We do have an out door pool and know how to keep it
balanced. Instead we bought a 7'by 8' red wood Sauna by Hello and we
have nude Sauna parties when our friends are over. If you select the
right control panel and position your thermomoter properly you can
adjust the range of heat in the Sauna to allow you and your guests to
stay in as long as you like. Saunas are dry heat though you can throw
water on the rocks in the electric heater. The water just shortens the
life of your heater coils. The sauna is prices the same as hot tubs and
come in a range of sizes. It did not take long to have ours installes
and we use it 4 to 5 times a week. Cost is about $1.50 to $2.00 dollars
for an hour. About as much as to run your self cleaning oven.
We have found it a great health benifit, it gets rid of tensions fo the
day. I sleep in it for the first 1/2 hour then read for the next 1/2
hour. Only bring in paper back books. The glue holding the pages melts.
We have a lot of rubberbanded books now.

| For those of you who want to know
In Grafton, MA, there's a place called Oasis Hot Tub where hot tubs can
be rented by the hour for soaking. They let up to four people into one tub
at a tub. The tubs are in private rooms with showers and changing rooms.
There's a cassette player for people who want to listen to something while
soaking. Towels are provided.
The number is 508-839-9961.

| I have been to the hot tubs in Grafton alot because I live out there.
You can also rent two tubs and have them open the door between them
and you can walk back and forth. You can only have 8 people (4 per
room) but it does make it nice to go back and forth to talk to other
people.. And with every 5 rentals you can get one free for two people.
Great during the winter months.....
