Just having read note 203, I was wondering if anyone knew of any CO beaches/resorts/whatever in Hawaii ? On the weekend, I happened to pick up a brochure on Hawaii from a local travel agent, and there were many pictures of people wearing very tiny bathing suits, and one picture of a young woman walking topless along what looked like to be a clothed beach. 204.1 | Little Makena Beach in Maui | RUTLND::GANZ | Wed Oct 25 1989 09:27 | 17
I was in Maui 4 years ago - the main nude beach is Little Makena at the south end of the island. At that time the police were sometimes hassling people but there was always somebody on "lookout" for the police and we didn't experience any problems. I got on a mailing list for info on the beach. They were going to court to try to stop the police from hassling people. In the meantime the police arrested a female tourist from Australia for "indecent exposure". It made big news in Australia and Hawaii and everybody got angry at the police for harrassing tourists. The judge overturned the police and everything became cool. There is a great guide book for Hawaii. It's called "Hidden Hawaii" - and it tells you about great beaches off the beaten path. These beaches are virtually deserted and you can probably do anything you want to there. Russ
204.2 | Red sand beach at Hana, Maui | ODIXIE::WEILER | Fri Jan 11 1991 10:19 | 10
I just got back from Maui. I missed Little Makena Beach, but did find a fantastic c/o beach at Hana. The beach itself is red volcanic sand and is reached by descending the cliffs behind the hotel. It's a great place for snorkeling and no one seemed worried about the legal status of the place. The best advice is to leave for the beach early since the drive from the main part of the island can take over 3 hours. Chris
204.3 | spots on the main island? | SSDEVO::PEAKS::MCCOY | Mon Feb 03 1992 16:20 | 15
I have a request by way of Alaska. A friend of mine who moved up there last summer is headed for the "main island" of Hawaii (by that I think she means Ohau) during spring break (she wants to remember what the sun looks like!). She asked me to inquire in this conference about CO beaches. So, does the new World Guide have any Ohau spots listed? Anyone have any first hand experience? And, since you're flipping through the pages of the guide anyway, she would also be appreciative of any pointers to CO spots around the Anchorage area. There's one for the Naturalist questionnaire; "Ever been nude north of the Tropic of Cancer during winter? (or "south of" for our friends down under!) thanks, -dean
204.4 | Update on Hawaii sites.. | BAGELS::SKINNER | happy wearin nuthin but a smile | Tue Feb 04 1992 20:59 | 34 |
A friend of mine just returned from Hawaii and has provided these updates: LITTLE MAKENA, MAUI THe beach is open and the hassles that plagued naturists using the beach are gone. A new mayor has been elected and she is not interested in hassling the naturists using the beach. RED SAND BEACH, HANA, MAUI A secluded beach, you should try to get to the beach early. Arriving at 1:30 PM, the sun was already blocked by the cliffs. Pay attention to parking regulations, police ticket improperly parked cars. HONOKOHAU BEACH, KAILUA, HAWAII A nice beach, be sure to follow the directions properly. Take a left just before you get to the Kona Marina, parking just beyond the boatyard. Follow the path propoerly, beware of unfriendly-sounding dogs. KEHENA BEACH, HAWAII A great beach with nice people. Rt 137 is a bit bumpy, plan on plenty of time to arrive. The Hawaiians who use the beach seem to be mainly leftover from the 60's, very friendly and helpful. One of these days, I'd like to put in my own updates! Robin |
