196.0. "Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK, a laid-back experience" by TRUCKS::JAMES_I () Wed Aug 16 1989 09:55
Just come back, brown and refreshed, from a very laid-back fortnight (US
translation; fortnight = 2 weeks approx) in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK. The
camp site had some rather primitive facilities, which would probably result in
closure if it was a textile site, but being prepared to rough it a bit we were
able to discover what compensations there are in that area. There are a
couple of caravans, and a furnished flat, to rent out if you want that type of
accomodation, but we are inveterate campers and took all our own gear.
The coastline is pretty rugged, so if you listen to our host's advice about
what beaches to use, you can spend many happy days in almost deserted coves. A
bit of sand for the kids to play on; the company of other families from the
very friendly camp-site; rock pools full of crabs and anemones; seaweeds;
rocks encrusted with barnacles and limpets; interesting geological formations;
peregrines and buzzards. If you can't be bothered to leave the site, there
are butterflies and flowers, and games like boule, or why not just lay in the
sun? What more could one wish for?
On cloudy days there are plenty of 'tourist' things to do off-site if you want
to; castles, re-constructed iron-age hill forts, boat-trips round the sea-bird
and seal colonies, potteries, woollen mills, scenic views, etc. We were too
busy doing nothing to take the time out for many such trips.

My personal recolection of many holidays is that the weather
is very "contrasty".
I recall getting sunburnt one week then seeing a whole field
of tents laid flat by a gale. Then spending the last three days
avoiding the sun (I was still burnt).
However, this did NOT stop me/us enjoying ourselves during all of the
holiday. After all the water stops at the skin.
