80.2 | Issue 28 (Fall/Winter 1988) Contents | MOIRA::FAIMAN | light upon the figured leaf | Thu Jan 12 1989 12:18 | 77 |
| Issue 28 (Fall/Winter 1988) of _The Event_ contents:
A guest editorial urging the _ASA Bulletin_ (official magazine of
American Sunbathing Association, the main US nudist organization)
to reject advertising from _Health and Effeciency_, an English
magazine which "portrays itself as the `world's most popular
naturist magazine' yet is in fact predominantly a `girlie
magazine,' featuring photos of women in sexually provocative
poses."
Several letters, pro and con, on Nikki Craft's photo analysis from
the previous issue.
Articles on modeling and art --
"The Art of Modeling," by Hugh Kilmer (a naturist and artist)
argues for modeling as "a performing arts profession which
demands respect, adequate payment, and solid, continuous
education in order to be at its best."
"Just Being Myself... the art of a model" describes the
benefits of modeling to the model. (The author, Judy Beck,
wrote "Consent... through a woman's eyes" in an earlier issue
of _The Event_. Both were excellent articles. I will be on
the lookout for writing by her in the future.)
"A Model's First Naturist Experience with the Dutch" describes
the experience of doing photo modeling for a Dutch naturist
photo group. The overall tone is "Boy, these naturists sure do
have weird hangups about a natural thing like nudity."
"The Stand-Ins" -- An editorial pointing out that the typical
restrictions on photography in nudist camps and other naturist
settings contribute to photographers' preference for working
with paid models, who are more cooperative, ultimately leading
to inaccurate and even exploitative photographic
representations of naturism. "To picture the REAL naturism, we
must first learn to accept visibility."
"Art censored in New Jersey" -- An account of an art exhibit
where nude photographs were removed from the exhibit because
some visitors found them offensive.
An article by Dennis Kirkpatrick of NENA on the Massachusetts child
pornography law (which makes *any* nude photography of a minor a
felony), and on the general need for naturists and nudists to be
concerned about state laws which may be radically inconsistent with
nudism:
"Do you know that some states may have laws already on the
books that prohibit the congregation of mixed genders in the
nude, or which prohibit adults and children from associating in
the nude? Have you checked your state's laws lately? Is your
landed club really "safe," or have you been lucky so far? If
neither you nor your club owners/operators can answer these
questions, it's time to act."
A cutting from a Maine newspaper on Drake's Island (posted
separately as note 66.7), and an article by Emile Guay, who chose
to be arrested at Drake's Island to challenge the Maine indecent
exposure law as it has been applied to simple beach nudity (see
note 66.6).
John Kyff's article on the Cape Cod Case (this is the third place
I've seen it -- see note 125).
"Bare backpacking White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire"
(posted separately as note 130).
"International Naturist" -- miscellaneous items on overseas
naturist travel.
"Hawaii beach review and directions," by Leif Heilberg.
Other miscellaneous items.

"Silvermine", Nina Silver's regular column. This issue, "Why aren't there
more women in the naturist movement?" [Nina Silver is, to my mind, the
most articulate and balanced writer for the feminist position in
naturism. Here articles are consistently thoughtful and thought-
provoking. I regard her column as one of the highlights of _The
Event_. -NF]

| For those of you who are interested...
I found a copy of _The Event_ on sale at "Nina's Corner", a big
newstand in Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA). The cost was $4.00.
I was told that they stocked it only recently.

80.5 | Issue 30 (Summer 1989) Contents | MOIRA::FAIMAN | light upon the figured leaf | Wed Jul 05 1989 15:24 | 33 |
| Issue 30 (Summer 1989) of _The Event_ contents:
_The Event_ is going to glossy paper throughout, better photographic
reproduction, fewer pages (to keep the price down). Some regular
columns will be dropped. [Personally, I thought the ordinary paper and
the photo quality were fine, and I'm really going to miss Nina Silver's
column. I guess this is the cost of going more "mass market," though.]

80.6 | _The Event_ => _Naturally_ | MOIRA::FAIMAN | light upon the figured leaf | Wed Sep 26 1990 13:04 | 22 |
| I just received a notice that _The Event_ is to be superseded by a new magazine
called _Naturally_. I'll just quote from the letter:
The slick-paper quarterly will be a complete departure from its
forerunner, with new layout, focus and features, with an 8-page
color section in the first issue, which is expected to expand in
later ones. Features of interest mainly to naturist and nudist
organizations, such as the letter column and routine club news,
will not appear, as NATURALLY will be, says Loibl [the publisher],
"the magazine of the naturist/nudist community, not of any
baturist/nudist organization or group of organizations."
As Loibl sees it, the focus of NATURALLY will be people -- "people
working, palying, socializing in clothing-optional settings" -- and
that pictorial values will be emphasized strongly, with more pictures,
all of professional quality, being used throughout. Early issues of
the new quarterly are expected to feature an extensive exploration
of the nudist community Cap d'Agde in France and complete coverage of
Loibl's planned on-the-spot survey of the thriving naturist scene in
Germany and eastern Europe.
Subscriptions are $18/year from NATURALLY, Box 203, Pequannock, NJ 07440.

| _Naturally_, Issue 1 (Fall/Winter 1990/91)
"The Naturist Lifestyle Magazine"
This is the magazine that used to be the _The Event_ ("Journal of
Clothes-Optional Living on the Eastern Seaboard"). The size (8-1/2x11,
40 pages) and basic format are still the same. There's now more color,
perhaps more of a photographic emphasis overall. Regional and
"sectarian" concerns are apparently being downplayed.
$5 / single issue, or $18 /year (four issues), from NATURALLY, PO Box
203, Pequannock, NJ 07740.
Contents of Issue 1:
"Let Freedom Ring" - Robert Bahr
general philosophy, religious freedom
"The Swimming Hole from camera to canvas" - Paul LeValley
account of the 19th century American artist Thomas Eakins, and
of his famous painting _The Swimming Hole_; discussion of the
relation between painting and photography
