| Sexual arousal is not a problem because the situation is not a sexual
one. I find that the most difficult thing to explain to those who
have never participated is that being in the company of other nude
people need not trigger a sexual response merely because the people
are nude. It's incredible how conditioned people are to associate
the two. The same sorts of things go on at a nude beach as go
on at any other beach -- swimming, boating, lying in the sun. That's
all there is to it.

| OK.......BUT, I have a theory. I SUSPECT that:
1. Nudists are apt to be more sensuous, simply because they are more tuned
in to the experiences of their senses.
2. Nudists are less inhibited sexually, simply because they are less inhibited
mentally and socially.
3. Nudists are more active sexually, simply because they are more active.
4. Nudists are more satisfied with life, simply because they are more accepting
of the beauty of things the way they already are.

Any truth to the above???

Be careful of such generalizations. Naturists can not be bundled
into a stereotype because they choose a particular lifestyle.
Naturists come from all walks of life, and in all shapes, sizes
and colors. Some are liberal and others are very conservative.
Some are outgoing while others are shy. Naturists are as varied
as anyone else.
My personal opinion: Nudists/Naturists are generally much nicer
people. They don't seem to be as uptight as people on textile beaches.
(I'd be uptight too if I had to sit around in a cold and very wet
swimsuit all day!) ;-)
>>> 1. Nudists are apt to be more sensuous, simply because they are more tuned

Could be...I don't know. Nudists are probably more comfortable
with their bodies, in that they're not as worried about what
other people think of their bodies. How that translates into
the above statement, I don't know.
>>>2. Nudists are less inhibited sexually, simply because they are less inhibited
>>> mentally and socially.
Among the nudists that I have met, here in this notesfile and
elsewhere, nobody talks about sex. Why? because that's not
the reason why nudists go nude. Sex is not part of the deal,
at least not in a public and social atmosphere. HA! Some of
the most outgoing and most aggressive people that I know are
some of the biggest prudes.
>>>3. Nudists are more active sexually, simply because they are more active.
EXCUSE ME? I'd like to know where you got this assumption.
What do you mean, nudists are more active so they must be sexually
active? What do you mean by "more active"????? What does sex
have to do with nudism? I mean, it happens sometimes, yes,
but I fail to see the logic in the statement.
>>>4. Nudists are more satisfied with life, simply because they are more accepting
>>>of the beauty of things the way they already are.

Like I said, I think nudists are nicer people. They have the
same problems that other people have, but they don't get as
uptight about it.
Some people think "Sex means nudity". Nudism or Naturism wants
to get the message out, "Nudity does not necessarily imply sex".
There seem to be alot of "myths" about Naturism and Naturists,
in general. It is those misconceptions that make the general
public turn away in disgust when the word "nude" is mentioned.

| First, to reply to .0; as everyone else has observed, this just
isn't a problem. Yes, I can imagine someone going to a nude beach
"to see naked women" -- sort of like Playboy in the flesh -- and
getting aroused because that's what he expects. I've never seen
anyone like that, though.
If you go to a nude beach or nudist camp because you think it's
silly that you have to wear clothing to go to the beach, or because
you hope to become a freer person by overcoming this silly taboo;
then you'll see ordinary people with no clothes on, doing pretty
much the same things that ordinary people do with clothes on, and
sex (and arousal) simply don't get into the picture.

On the other hand, there are some people who realize that nudism
*isn't* about orgies. Many of these people subscribe to one of the
other great myths: that nudists are asexual cultists, commited to
an ascetic lifestyle. We probably got this myth partly because
nudists have put so much effort into debunking the "orgy" myth that
they've gone beyond the message "nudity has nothing to do with sex"
and implied that "nudists have nothing to do with sex".
My own experience is that once again, nudists are basically normal
people. I have what I suppose to be a reasonably normal sex life;
but that is a *private* matter (between me and my wife). My
sexuality is not for public display, either in downtown Nashua or in
a nudist camp.

Good comment...
Naturists are normal people and have normal feelings like everyone
else. The only difference is that they believe clothes are not
necessary in certain situations that won't offend other people,
(like nude beaches, for example).

How about:
Nudists are normal people who do not believe people should believe
they are offended when someone wishes to be nude. More than enjoying
nudity, nudists are not offended by the nudity of others.

suggest noters restrict their reply to the topic. If they want to talk

| Actually, in point of fact, at least half of the responses addressed the
original question. So the notes conference is still doing better than the
batting average on the USENET. :-)

Less of a problem than elsewhere. Sexual arousal might occur as a result of
somebody else's behavior but not because of simple nudity. One of the
reasons that nudists tend to frown upon inappropriate sexual behavior is that
they (or others nearby) might be aroused and become inclined toward the same
behavior and they aren't there for that kind of thing.
As for an erection (which may have nothing to do with arousal) - no need to
dig a hole in the sand; just roll over and think about what you might do for
dinner or a book discussed recently until it goes away. How do people react?
I don't know; I've never noticed that somebody had one, but I can't imagine
that people would do much more than deliberately ignore it.

I don't know.
