| I don't know the answer to your question; but part of the answer for
Maine might be deduced from the newspaper article in note 67.0.

I had quite a strange experience last September on the Outer Banks in
North Carolina.

I don't know the NC regulations, but I was sunning off season on a remote
and deserted stretch of beach. I was wearing a thong and a small top, i.e. all
the "indecent" (using US terminology) parts of me were covered. I was
spotted by two Park Service rangers (both female). They approached me
and stared for quite some time before they said "Nude sunbathing is not
permitted on NC beaches." As they were both wearing guns and looked rather
menacing, I pretended I didn't understand their English (I happened to be
reading a book in French, cover exposed). They pantomimed putting on clothes
and I nodded that I understood. After donning a shift which covered me from
shoulders to mid-thigh, they smiled and left. The funny thing is this : my
husband was returning from a walk and passed the rangers as they left me. He
was wearing only a thong (a reeeeeally tiny one!). He walked up to them and
asked if everything was ok and they didn't mention a thing about *his* beach
wear! Hmmm....

I couldn't comment re: the US, but in Europe, the thong is extremely popular.
You'll even see the more modest women wearing a thong *and* a top. Cheeks
are just cheeks, I suppose, to everyone except NC rangers.

I don't know if I would say I was testing the limits, but I have worn a
thong/g-string on several occasions in Mass, New Hampshire and Maine.
In all instances, noone in an official capacity (ranger, lifeguard,
etc) was bothered. One time I wore a g-string at a hotel pool area and
wasn't bothered.

I would guess as long as noone complains, the suit can be a skimpy as
you want. I would bet in most cases, the rangers, lifeguards are
concerned with public sentiment and not actually what you are wearing.
I would suggest wearing what you want/feel comfortable with and
find out what happens. That's what I do and the suits keep getting
smaller each time.

| I've known people to wear them at Moonstone and it's no problem (obviously),
but I think that there might be a problem with skimpy suits at Hampton.

| Whens the last time youve visited Hampton, the last 2 summers the
suits have become very skimpy and thongs are few and far but have
seen many people with them...(all woman). But if you want to go
were the numbers are higher you may want to visit york beace in ME.
There's a high percentage of canadians and they seem to were a
little less material at the beach than the regulars...
