In the last edition of BN (British Naturism) they report that:- The US National Commision on Mental Health undertook a 6 year study of hundreds of groups and organisations and rated the mental health of their members. Who came out on top - Naturists. Quote from a spokesman : "the nudists came out so far in front that virtually every other group studied looks like a gathering of lunatics, perverts and criminals in comparison". One member of the Commission was so impressed that he and his family have now become converts. As a group nudists had: * lowest rate for crime suicide mental breakdowns divorce time lost from work because of illness high school drop outs * highest number of university scholarship winners college graduates star athletes * children with much higher than average intelligence ---------------------------------------- This sounds just too good to be true. And how come I'm such a tangled mess of doubts, hangups and inconsistencies. You mean there are people *worse* than me - jim murray

61.1 | gold pendants - one pound fifty | RDGCSS::MURRAY | Tue Jun 28 1988 04:52 | 12
I was right - it seems it *was* too good to be true. It looks like BN got the story from the ASA _Bulletin_ . In the next issue of BN they report that in the following issue of _Bulletin_ the ASA reports it has been completely unable to verify the story. Isn't it amazing how gullible you (I) can be if you want to believe something enough. All critical faculties get put into suspended/swapped_out mode. I think I'll go up to Oxford St. and buy a few of those solid gold pendants they sell from the pavement for about one pound fifty. jim

I wish they WOULD do the study, because I suspect the results are good enough to be true. It may be a while, though, because naturism also has a distinct anti-political flavor to it ( it refutes social categorization ), and not many politicians want it to catch on. Nudism is part of the counter culture, so I don't expect much help from the government or other established social institutions. John.

If Jerry Brown were a naturist, I'd definitely want him as president of the U.S. Let's break apart all constricting social institutions! |
