50.0. "Lake Powell?!?!?" by NEXUS::GORTMAKER (the Gort) Tue May 10 1988 23:46

Can anyone tell me if there is a "free" beach at lake powell?
I realize that finding a side canyon would seem the way to go
but wondered if there were any known good locations. I will be
spending 2 weeks there in june and wanted to know what to expect.

    Thanks in advance,-j

Sorry Gort, their are no "known" free beaches you just pick a canyon
and make your own dress code.

Thanks Paul, I will report back what I find there once I get back.
Actually finding a canyon sounds like more fun anyway.

Well the trip to powell went as planned everything was great.
The entire place is very isolated 66 miles to the nearest town and
only a few services offered at the lake. They are very proud of
the services too $1.67 per gallon for unleaded and $2.50 for a bag
    of ice!
The naturist side of powell is great there aare thousands of places
to get away from people and get an even tan. I found a great spot
less than 50 yards from our camp site. The weather was unbeatable
92 was the night time low and 105 the day high no wind to speak
of and best of all not one 'skeeter bite the whole time our group
was there. Next year I'm planning to rent a houseboat and really
see more of the lake which has over 1900 miles of shore line and
fantastic beauty at every turn of the canyon.
If anyone would like more info about powell please feel free to
send me mail I picked up a few handouts on rental prices and other
info. BTW- $1600 gets you a 50' houseboat that sleeps 12 for 7 nights
during prime season (not bad at all).

50.5Spring and Fall is super!GENRAL::KILGOREThe Desert RatTue Jul 05 1988 15:205
Lake Powell is great in late spring (ie. May) or fall (ie. late Sept, early
Oct). I guess if you like to swim in Powell you have to go in summer cause
the temp of the water is just too cold other times of the year.

>> Is this Lake Powell in the US? Is it near anything?

Lake Powell is a huge man-made lake located in southeast Utah (which by the
way is, in the U.S., just to the west of Colorado and north of Arizona). The
lake stretches 190 miles from Paige, Arizona to the southern tip of Canyonlands
National Park in the rapids of Cataract Canyon. There is over 250 square miles
of water. Boating and fishing are very popular. I'll give you more details
when I find my brochure on it.

I was there last October, went out on the lake with a friend and his boat. Was
OK...I prefer to walk where I need to go.

50.8All in the middle of a desert!GENRAL::KILGOREThe Desert RatThu Jul 07 1988 00:5810
Oh, My! I can't find the information I had about Lake Powell!

I do remember there are some 1,900 or so miles of shoreline to enjoy. You did
read right...1,900 miles of shoreline, in the middle of a desert! That means
many side canyons to explore and hike nude in!

If I do find the info, I'll pass it on. Now I'm frustrated...where could that
be?!? |-(

Lake powell is a 10 hour drive from colorado springs or maybe 4
hours from grand junction Co.(thats hauling a boat) it is really
as Judy said in the middle of the desert with little nearby.
The nearest town Hanksville is 66 miles away and nothing to brag
about 2 gas stations a general store and a resturant.
It is harder to find someone than to get away there is so many
canyons and places to camp that finding an isolated location is
easy. One perfect place is the end of moki canyon(access by boat
only) there is a good place to tie the boat up and a decent trail
    to follow.
About the lake it has 1900-2000 miles of shoreline(depends on water
level) the water is above 65 degrees from mid june to october and
very clear(can see ~30' down). This is not a lake for the
in-experienced swimmer the shore line drops off very steeply and
a place to put you foot on the bottom is rare(average depth is near
300' max 600+) and a good amount of it is bounded by shear cliffs
extending upwards from the water 200 feet or more in places.
All of the people I met while there were very nice including the
park staff. If you decide to fish be sure you have a license we
were visited by game wardens daily and on one day 3 seperate times
by different rangers. They are sneaky too you never hear them coming
until they are 20 feet away(quiet boat!).
The camp sites are clean and campgrounds all have toilets availible
some with hot and cold running water! There also is a public shower
    facility $2.00 per head.
The area around the lake is very rocky and only a few sandy beaches
exist there are very few trees so shade is sometimes hard to find.

I plan to go back next year and rent a house boat anyone care to
    join in?

How fast do you drive?? Oh, I see, interstate hiways most of the way, I-25 &
I-70 where you can drive 65 mph until you hit Utah...we always go south on
I-25 to Walsenburg then west, over LaVeta and Wolf Creek Passes. Takes us
9 - 10 hours to get to Blanding, Utah, then another 2 hours to Powell. OK,
everybody drag out your atlas and check out the Colorado and Utah maps!

Sounds interesting! When do you plan to go next year? Any tentative dates?

re.10 Utah has 65 speed limit now so you can make pretty good time.
We averaged about 30 going up the hills and let it rip on the down
hill side to make better time. We went up 24 to leadville then hit
I-70 at copper mountain. We did take one wrong turn at hanksville
and got a tour of the coral reef something or another which ate
about 2 hours extra time on the way there.
As for going back the boat rental prices are better during early
may or after school starts in the fall. The tempratures seem to
better then anyway. I'm flexible at this point as to the actual
dates. I have a price sheet out on loan but hope to get it back
soon to start planning. I have been told that you need to start
early making reservations to get a boat during certain times of
    the year.

I'm going to try and divert the Lake Powell discussion back to this note.

Lake Powell marinas are operated by Del E. Webb Recreational properties as
an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service, Glen Canyon National
Recreation Area. They have a toll-free number to call for Lake Powell
reservations which is:

	1-800-528-6154 or in Arizona 1-278-8888

	OR write:

	Del E. Webb Recreational Properties
	2916 N. 35th Ave., Suite 8
	Phoenix, AZ 85017-5261

The idea of renting a houseboat sounds super. Just not sure if this would
work out for us this year because of other already scheduled commitments.
