| Does NENA do anything in the summer or spring?
I remember calling them up about two years ago and I was told
that there wasn't much going on during the summer because everyone
was at the beach. :-)

| > Does NENA do anything in the summer or spring?
Not much. There's National Nude Weekend (coordinated nude
activities around the country, presumably designed partly to get
publicity). NENA has traditionally celebrated this at Moonstone;
I'm not sure what their plans are this year.
Also, some of the SIGs (Special Interest Groups) may have group
activities. For example, the Family SIG used to have a few weekend
outings to sites around New England; and I think the Nude
Backpacking SIG is planning a couple of hikes in the White Mountains
this summer.

24.3 | National Nude Day Protest Rally | CLOVE::MACDONALD_K | | Thu Jul 06 1989 11:55 | 30 |
| I got a flyer from the NENA people at Moonstone on Monday, July
3rd. It's about National Nude Weekend and here's what it said:
(re-printed without permission)
National Nude Day Beach Celebration and Protest at Moonstone
Saturday, July 8 (Rain Date - Sunday the 9th)
Bring a buffet item or some item of food or drink. Bring money if
you can't bring food. Bring the kids! Bring your friends! Bring
your high spirits!
For the first time ever, N.E.N.A. is organizing a protest rally
to show what we think about government fences on our beach. Please
bring a large cardboard sign saying "Give the People Back Their
Beach" or "Rangers, Guns and Fences Don't Belong Here!" or make
up your own slogan championing everyone's right to enjoy Moonstone
as we did in the past. Newspapers and T.V. will be there. Let's
show them that the Fish & Wildlife Service has gone too far excluding
ALL citizens (nude and clothed) from the state's most beautiful
beach. Also, bring a YELLOW RIBBON which we will tie to the fence
to symbolically liberate Moonstone from Washington and give it back
to the people of Rhode Island.
So... that's what you can expect if you go to Moonstone next Saturday.
If anyone goes, please let us know about the day's activities.
I won't be able to make it, but even if I could, I'm not so sure
I'd want to deal with the crowds - not to mention the newspapers
and T.V

| We went on the NENA whale watch about 4 years ago (geez, has it really
been that long?!). As I said, the boat left from Long Wharf in Boston.
It was kind of fun, despite the fact that I spent most of the day
seasick :-((( We got to see a few whales some distance from the boat.
Not overly impressive, but it was fun being outdoors and sailing
anyway.

Got a few questions; How big is the boat?
How many does it hold?
Is it usually a full crowd, and what per-cent
are children?
What is available for food and drink?
What equipment, if any would be recommended to
bring?
And last, are non NENA members invited?
Thanx

| RE: NENA membership
No...I think it went up to $50 this year to cover the added expense of
renting out the beach beside Moonstone this year.
Most of the NENA activities do not require membership, though most of
them give a discount to members. Sometimes showing up with a NENA
member will get you the discount anyways.
By the way, the next NENA swim is this Saturday (the 17th).

Well, I'm not paying $50 I'm not planning on utilizing the beach,
that's ridiculous. I can understand $20, that's acceptable......
Perhaps the beach should charge an entrance fee or something.
This Saturday? Damn....some people expressed an interest into going to
one (of course, I have no idea how to get a hold of one of the people
since I only know his first name). And there isn't one for the month
of December, right?
Perhaps getting a big group together of January's might be an idea!

| Those of you who are in NENA might want to take a close look at
the membership renewal forms.
I noticed that they ask for your social security number....
...and they ask you to sign away various rights.
One of the things that they can technically do, if you sign it, is run
a credit check on you and a criminal check, too. It seems awfully
nosy of them to want to run a credit check on their members. How
could a credit check be useful enough for them to decide if someone is
okay to be a NENA member?
I declined to fill in my social security number and I crossed out
the section about a credit check. I'll be interested in seeing if
they process my check.

24.19 | Don't give them your SS#! | MLTVAX::FISHER | Kill your television | Wed Apr 22 1992 18:03 | 13 |
| Social Security numbers provide incredible opportunities for abuse, yet
many people think nothing of providing theirs just for the asking. As
Ben mentions, with someones SS#, you can get their detailed credit history
and criminal records, not to mention their driving record, job and income
histories, even medical records for their entire families!
You are not required to provide your SS# to any organization unless they
will be reporting tax information to the IRS. This means even the DMV has
no right to ask you, though you may have to fight to avoid providing yours.
Many organizations have taken to requesting it as an easy way to identify
members- let them find some other method! It's none of their damn business.

As bad as this sounds it is not the worst of it!
If someone has your name and SS# they can get credit
cards using *your* good credit. BTW your good credit won't stay that
way for long if this happens! I got this advice from a *very* expensive
lawyer. PROTECT your SS# and Bank Account Numbers! Either could cause
you major headaches if they were to get into the wrong hands. I heard
of one case where this happened to someone. When it became apparent to
the authorities what had happened, and that the mega bills were not his
fault, he was advised by the chief of police to *change his name*! It
seems that this was as a far easier solution than getting it all
straightened out.
Massachusetts will give you a new ID number on your drivers
licence, instead of your SS#, just for the asking. It only takes a few
more seconds when you renew your licence.

24.21 | | TOKLAS::feldman | Larix decidua, var. decify | Wed Apr 22 1992 18:48 | 24 |
| There's been some good discussion of this issue in the CONSUMER notes file.
Not to detract from the good advice in the preceding notes, but the situation
is worse than you might believe. Social security numbers are used on credit
reports as a consistency check, i. e., to make sure that when you request
a check on some person, you get the right person. But they are not a
prerequisite for such a check (last I heard). If you give someone
permission to run a credit check, they can usually take just your name
and address, give it to the credit check companies, and get the report,
complete with your social security number.
I don't know whether the law has changed in recent years, but it used
to be that you didn't even need permission to run a credit check. This
was a real easy way to find out someone's SS#.
Personally, I don't have my SS# on my driver's license, and I never give it out
gratuitously, but in situations where I'm applying for credit, I will
sometimes give it out, because I want to make sure they get the right
report. This is especially true in situations where it's silly to
withhold it, such as applying for a loan from a bank where you already
have an interest bearing account, and they already have your SS#
elsewhere in their system.

| I'll be on vacation at Gay Head from August 8 until August 15. Look
for me. I'll be the one without any clothes!
Seriously, I'm 6'3", 215lbs, bearded and will be wearing either a DECUS
hat or a fishing hat.
I could conceivably drive 2 (3 if they are close) people BACK to the
boat at the end of the day, but since I'll have tons of stuff in the
car on the way over, I cannot offer to bring anyone to the beach.
There is a shuttle bus for $4.50 which leaves VH at 8:55, 10 minutes
after the 8am ferry arrives...
