8.0. "USENET rec.nude archives available" by MOIRA::FAIMAN (Ontology Recapitulates Philology) Wed Jan 27 1988 11:07

I have collected an edited archive of postings from the USENET rec.nude
newsgroup since spring 1985 in the conference MOIRA::REC_NUDE.
Press KP7 or SELECT to add it to your notebook.

REC_NUDE is write-locked, but you are welcome to extract notes from
it and repost them in this conference for discussion if you like.

In case you aren't familiar with USENET newsgroups, here's an
    abbreviated introduction:

USENET vaguely resembles a collection of NOTES conferences, supported
by a wide variety of machines owned by a wide variety of institutions
(companies, universities, and government facilities). The
implementation is more like cooperative mail redistribution using
store-and-forward mailers and dial-up network links. Thus, a few
    differences from NOTES are:

A posting (the USENET equivalent of a note) may take days to
reach everyone. Some people will never see it. It is not at
all uncommon to see a reply to a posting before you see the
original posting; in fact, you may see a baffling reply and
never find out what it was about.

Since the implementation is basically just mail forwarding,
there is no moderation. There are some newsgroups that make
    	SOAPBOX look tame.

We cannot use the normal USENET tools to read newsgroups within
Digital, but all of the newsgroups are redistributed by mail within
Digital. (See the NOTES conference ROLL::USENET for more details.)

One of the USENET newsgroups is rec.nude (nude recreation), and
I have collected the postings from this group in MOIRA::REC_NUDE
and edited out the garbage (a high proportion of the original content,
since rec.nude isn't all that active in the first place, and naturally
attracts a lot of random postings on peripherally related topics).

    Enjoy.

Thank you for making those archives available. I am a novice naturist and
reading those discussions will help me answer my novice questions. That should
save you more experienced noters from some typing!

These concerns are from a reader.

===============================================================================

Hi Neil,

I've been following rec_nude (your echo of rec.nude) for some time
and am concerned about a trend I've been observing and how it might
impact not only *that* conference, but the naturism notes file.

Basically, I think I'm seeing a *lot* more inappropriate postings like
"send me GIFs", "dial xxx.xxx.xxxx for online sex", etc.

My concern is that somene reading rec_nude will use those inappropriate
postings as ammunition to attempt to shut down both conferences.

Now I understand that all that rec_nude is is a capture of rec.nude, and
that the inappropriate postings really came from the internet. I understand
quite well that those postings did not originate from within the
corporation.

However, since they are offensive (and yes, I find them offensivem and do not
enjoy encountering them when I read rec_nude) it's my concern that
someone will complain, with the result that *all* naturism-related conferences
will be banned (the typical overreaction).

I don't have and real suggestion, other than to moderate rec_nude, or perhaps
attempt to develop some home-brew filter to weed out the inoffensive material.

Regards,

This was my reply. What do you think?

	-Neil

=============================================================================

I agree. I simply don't have the energy to do anything about it. I don't even
read about 90% articles in rec.nude any more -- I just capture them for the
newsgroup update. My personal choice would have been to drop the rec.nude
conference alltogether, and let people read it through Usenet if they wanted;
but I got pretty strong feedback that people really wanted me to continue it.
But I'm no longer willing to go to the trouble of being selective in what I
capture.

I'll post your concerns and this reply in NATURISM and see what people think.

Neil, I don't believe the responsibility should lie on your shoulders to have
to be selective. If what -2 says is what is getting posted in rec.nude, I
agree this should not be on Digital's networks and could jeopardize our
conference. If people want to have access to it, they should access it
directly instead of the separate conference.

Re -.1

This is my feeling, also. If someone wants to access a Usenet conference, let them
do so directly. Anyone with access to the Easynet can get either a text or graphical
Usenet reader, and can peruse to their heart's content. Why should you do their work
for them?

I vote to just get rid of the rec_nude notesfile. It's offensive and
dangerous and there is no way to control it. Why take a chance on
losing a valuable tool like Naturism? Anyone who wants to read Rec.
Nude can do so on the net.
