1023.0. "Sibling Rivalry?" by ICS::SILVERSTEIN () Tue Aug 27 1996 08:05
Looking for suggestions/ideas/help with what I think is sibling
rivalry. Last summer I got three kittens--littermates (actually, it
was the whole litter)--two females, one male. All three have been
neutered. One of the females, Cali, runs away.
Or, so we thought. On closer observation, it looks like the male,
Paddy, is refusing to share the territory with her. She ends up way
down our street, well past her comfort zone and then becomes
disoriented and can't (or won't) find her way home. This last time she
was gone for a week, and it took flyers in the neighbors' mailboxes to
find her. Other times we've been able to find her, but always we've
had to go get her. She's always happy to be found and loves the attention
and will stay close for a few days, then off she goes again.
The other female, Misty, doesn't seem to be bothered by Paddy or their
dog, Pluto-the-dog-from-outer-space (Cali gets along with Pluto). The
neighbors next door have seen Paddy and Cali fighting in their yard,
which is what started the sibling rivalry theory.
Any thoughts, ideas, experiences with same??

| Can you keep them in the house, and go thru the normal new (sic) cat
intro techniques?

1023.2 | confined to quarters | ICS::SILVERSTEIN | | Tue Aug 27 1996 11:46 | 11 |
| Cali is confined to quarters at the moment. All are brought in every
night; Paddy is now locked in the den and Cali (and Misty) are sleeping
on the bed. Prior to this, only Paddy slept on the bed. We thought it
was their choice, but now are suspicious. Other than that, we haven't
instituted any other new cat intro techniques.
Do you think we should keep all in? We are also confining
Pluto-the-dog-from-outerspace more and letting the cats have the run of
the house without interference from him (also about 1 year old) more
frequently.

| Well, I'm on the indoors only for cats persuasion :-0

| I too think you should keep the cats inside. If there is some dominant
behavior going on, you'll be able to see it and correct the situation.
I keep seven inside, and occasionally two of my females will ambush
each other. They have never gotten into a big fight - just threatening
sounds, but I'm there to let them know that the behavior isn't
acceptable! Also, your cats will be much safer if confined.

Look what popped out from under the bridge again. For those not
familiar with the gentleman's contributions, YES, he is trying
to <ahem> yank your tail.

| Seems to me the way to deal with this is for the mods to post a
subsequent reply, in case anyone gets mislead by his "advice", and
then delete his posting. Isn't there something in the corporate ethics
guidelines about harassing other employees? Sounds to me like his
postings are a violation of that.
