I've checked and can't seem to find any notes about cat sitting fees. If I missed them, please direct me there. I am leaving Digital after 16 years and taking a job which will require travel every week. My girls will be well taken care of by a friend I can trust who will visit them twice a day - she is great, does the basic needs stuff and then talks to them, plays with them and brings them treats. I want to pay her as this is not just a week here and there. Do you folks know what cat sitters get? I will be calling my vet to have a backup sitter just in case, but I thought you folks might have some ideas on what is fair and reasonable. At the same time, I'd like to say how much I have enjoyed this notes file and each and every one of you. I have not contributed much, but have learned a lot. Tears have come to my eyes when one of our loved ones is ill or leaves us. I've laughed at the "I can't believe what they did today" stories, and at times been glad to hear one my girls is not the only kitty who does something very strange. I've gotten angry about the stories of mistreatment, abuse and unkindness. It's been wonderful to have been able to be a part of this. I wish all of you and your "owners" the best. Thanks Linda

1005.1 | Another thing you might want to talk to your vet about when you travel... | UHUH::TALCOTT | Wed Jun 12 1996 10:41 | 9
We have clients who board their animals and say "if anything goes wrong, fix it - I don't care what it costs." Or more often, owners tell their sitters the same thing. Problem is, sometimes people will care what it costs when they start looking at a significant amount of money. It might not hurt to ask your vet if they'd like a letter reading something like "While I'm away and my animals are in the care of the hospital or someone else, I authorize the spending of up to $xxx on emergency care if you are unable to contact me." Definately do up a written note to the vet as to instructions in your absence, your friends' name and #, and if/where you can be reached. This will make things a lot easier if/when something does happen while you are unavailable. As far as rates, consider how far your friend must travel each trip, the time she will spend at your house, how much work is involved. Since it will be weekly, the rate shouldn't vary too much. When we go away, my neighbor lives next door, so there is no travel/driving time, she spends an hour to an hour and a half twice a day, has to change 5 litter boxes and feed 11 cats and a parrot. Multiply average daily hairballs, and other accidents, we figured about $30 a day. She also waters plants and brings in mail, paper, all that stuff. Puts out trash on trash day, makes place look lived in for the time we're gone. So to figure your amount tally up all chores you will need done. It's always worth it if you know the person is trustworthy.. good luck in your new life!

Di's Pet Connection charges $10 for one visit per day to my two cats, $5 for a second visit on the same day. I'm not sure if it's a flat fee per visit or the number of animals counts too.

My mom lives in NJ and has someone who charges $7/day for a single visit (2 if she's not working) that includes cleaning the boxes, feeding and talking to the cat - if he deigns to come down off the bed... janetb.

I had CastleKeepers of Concord come in when I was on vacation. They charged $12/stop which included feeding the (2) cats, watering plants, bringing in mail and watering garden. They asked for a complete portfolio of information about the cats too. Valerie |
