| Karen,
I had this problem with Ashlar just before I discovered that I needed
to wage major war on fleas. His hair fell out all around his collar
and fleas were visible on him in that thin white hair. I had a cat
show judge point one out to me. :^}
Shortly afterwards I ended up with a major flea infestation that
took me weeks to get under control. Perhaps it's just coincidence
but it's something to be aware of.

| Thanks. I wonder why fleas somehow cause this. I could
understand excessive grooming causing a hair problem, but
I haven't noticed the cats trying to do that under their
collars.

| I never noticed Ashlar trying to groom there either. It
was really strange how his fur fell out. And, it was only
him. None of the other cats had the problem. With him
being an all white kitty it was really strange to look at
his neck and see all this pink skin instead of fur. I
took the collar off while he regrew the fur and I've never
put it back on.

| I'm concerned about not having collars on my indoor-only
kitties. I imagine fire, burglars, whatever ... that could
lead to their being lost outdoors.

| I know. That is a problem. When I lost Torbie I kicked myself
for not having a collar on her (not that anyone could have gotten
close enough to her to read it anyway). But, I show my cats and
having the collar on causes the fur to be all funky or rubbed off
around the neck and that is not a good thing for a show cat either.
It's something I go round and round on...collars for their safe return
or funky necks during a show. The plan is to get collars on all of
them soon since I'm not showing as much now. I've got to order their
tags. Hopefully, I won't have a repeat performance of bald neck
syndrome in the future.

| I recently microchipped all my cats (current show cats included).
I can hardly find the chips, even knowing that they're there, but they come up
nicely on a scanner, such as vets and animal shelters use. I feel more secure
now knowing that there is SOME form of ID on the cats, but collars and show
longhairs just don't mix well.

| I have my kitties microchipped as well, except my newest addition,
who I haven't gotten around to doing yet. But, random folk in
the neighborhood wouldn't know the difference between a collarless
cat and a microchipped collarless cat, and might think the latter
is an ownerless stray and take them in, etc. (paranoia lives.)
