| dehydration is something that you need to be concerned with with
diarreaha, so you might try giving the little guy some Pedylite instead
of water (this is the stuff you give baby humans with diarreha and
vomiting; not only does it help balence the electrolites, it has some
salt in it, so it is retained). My cat's have seemed to like it.
You might also try giving him something to eat that will "bind him",
like hamberg and rice, or even a little cheeze.
I hope Benny feels better soon!

| As Deb has said, if this returns you have to keep a sharp
eye out for dehydration. What is Javex? You want to be careful
not to use a cleaner that is toxic. Have fun with your
wonderful new kitty,

| Thanks for the info Deb and Karen.
Deb where do I get Pedylite? I've never heard of it.
Karen, Javex is a disinfectant/germ killer. I was afraid these
parasites might be alive and well in his litter (even though I've been
cleaning it 2ce a day). I'll have to consider whether it would be
toxic or not - (I'm not sure at this point).
Once again thanks for your input.
Cheers,
Marilyn

| Actually a diluted Bleach/Water solution is the most
effective and cheapest way to kill germs. As long as you
dilute it...it is not toxic to kitties.

| Marilyn,
Our last litter of kittens had a bout of coxcidia, It cleared up
after the second dose of medicine. The vet said it is caught from
probably the mother having a mild case. I asked about giving the
mother the medicine he said is was not needed as adults can fight off
the parasite with no problems. I don't know about your kitten but the
way mine acted you wouldn't even know they were sick the way they
played and rolled around.
Good Luck,
Dennis

Be careful with bleach. Some cats are allergic. My cat had a very bad
bleeding-paws-syndrome from Domestos (cleaning liquid, bleach-based)
for almost three weeks (mentioned in the conference somewhere, too)

| Thanks for the feedback. Benny seems to be in the clear so far. 2nd
dose seems to be the charm. I did dilute bleach and completely clean
his litter out.
He seems fine - playful and sometimes naughty - climbing up the drapes
this morning!
Cheers,
Marilyn

| You can get Pedilyte at a drug store, or at the grocery store in the
baby food department. It looks like a plastic bottle of water (there
are also some colored varieties like Bublegum flavored). Most drug
stores carry a generic brand which costs half as much as Pedylite, byt
the way.

994.11 | BENNY IS SICK AGAIN | OTOOA::MRECORD | | Thu Apr 18 1996 10:30 | 15 |
| Update...
Benny is sick again! Coxcidia has returned - so vet put him on
medicine called Septra for 3 weeks. Apparently, he is heavily
infested. The vet thinks he may also have round worm although tests
showed clear, so he's going to be dewormed as well just in case.
Dennis if your reading this, you mentioned you had kittens that had
this pesky parasite. My vet thinks Benny came from a kitten mill type
environment. She said these parasites usually occur in places where
there are numerous kittens/cats who have not been vacinated/dewormed.
Where did your kittens come from?
Bye for now,
Marilyn

| It was from my house, Sapphy has had six litters (in six years) and
this is was the only time her kittens have ever been sick. But the vet
said it wasn't to serious. The kittens never did act sick they were
still runing around jumping and fighting with each other. As far as I
know the kittens we sold have not had a reoccurance we asked that the
buyers let us know if they had any problems.

994.14 | Nothin' to get excited about... | PCBUOA::FALLON | | Fri May 03 1996 12:50 | 15 |
| Coccidia is a protozoan. It is a parasite. It is not something
to get too excited about thought. Usually a five day on five off
and five on again with Metronidazole will cure it.
It is not like worms and can easily be passed from the mother
or picked up about anywhere. It does not necessarily mean the
animal came from unclean quarters either. The first OSH I got
12 years ago came with it and after the meds, was fine.
The only real danger with it is that if it happens to a very
young cat or old, the diahrea can dehydrate the animal and also
cause malabsorption of food. It's a simple thing to treat.
I wouldn't worry too much.

| UPDATE...
Many thanks for the great advice and support.
Benny is on his third week of Septra medicine - a sulpha drug I'm
told. He seems to be clear so far. The five day on and then off that we
have tried twice before didn't cure the little guy.
Here's hoping this is it.
Cheers,
Marilyn
