Sounds like a case requiring waterpistol guided behaviour modification...
len (who's used it semisuccessfully on Rocky and Floyd, the Dynamic Duo).

| You could also attempt to put aluminum foil at the corner of
the rug and hopefully break the habit that way. Cats are
suppose to hate aluminum foil.....(some do..some don't)

| My one cat who does that prefers horizontal scratching surfaces,
so I got him those carpet covered cylinders that are
horizontal, and now he pretty much leaves the rug alone.

| I got about 20 feet of medium grade sisal rope (very coarse rope) and wrapped it
around a junky piece of wood I had. I put a hole at either end so I could knot
the sisal and put it where the cat used to scratch the rug. She loves the sisal,
it has the right amount of resistance to her clawing and she's given up on the
rug; it just doesn't do it for her any more! You can get sisal at any hardware
store and making it yourself saves you about $20.00 (store bought models). I've
found cats don't go for fancy as much as they go for functional. She doesn't
seem to care that the rope is wrapped around an old 1 x 6 piece of wood instead
of fancy PVC. Fancy is for owners...

| A friend of mine makes a little plastic gadget that fits under doors
and extends to the corners by doors for this very purpose. Works
great for any cat who attempts to dig there way out under a doorway.
I imagine this friend could also come up with something for plain
corners if a description was given of what was needed.
His name is Bob Roseberry and he owns Katrees (sorry can't put the
accent in over the 1st "e"). He sells cat-related products, trees,
etc. 408-663-5575
