971.0. "Good bye Gloria" by LJSRV1::MARX () Fri Jan 19 1996 09:45

Last night I had to face losing a dear friend. My 16+ yr. old white
Persian, Gloria, had to be put down. Several months ago she developed
what seemed to be a bad case of ear mites. In the process of treating
her, it became apparent that she had malignant tumors in her ear. She
was so old that the doctor and I agreed that it would be best to leave
her alone and not try to do any surgery. Up to now, although I had to
regularly treat her ear at home, she lived a normal life for an "old
girl". Her appetite was good, she drank water and faithfully used the
litter box. But, almost a week ago, things changed. She stopped
coming to the food dish and just layed sleeping in the same spot day
and night. I tried tempting her with food, but with no luck. The only
thing I saw her do was walk to the water dish and drink.

I believe she was telling me that it was time. There wasn't any more
quality to her life. I spent time letting her know that I
love her and then took her to the hospital. Everything was handled
with compassion and now she's not suffering any more. Letting her go
was so hard to do, and I'll always miss her. But in losing my friend,
I did my friend a favor.

Thanks for listening to me. It's helping me to handle things knowing I
can let people who understand know what happened.

decision for both Gloria and yourself....and she knew it!!

You must have ALOT of wonderful memories that will soon make
you smile when you think about her.....

Since Donna and I were located at the same site for quite a while, I've
known Gloria 2nd hand for some time and Donna and I often traded stories
about our older cats' eccentricities. When you have an old cat (my Merlin
will be 21 in July), you know what's coming inevitably, but that never
makes it any easier, even when you've been through it before, even when
you've been through it more than once. And really loving them means
doing what's right for them, rather than what we'd prefer.

Gloria lives on in our hearts and memories.

    Donna,

My sympathies to you. It's hard, I know. I faced the same
situation with my 20 year old cat. It's been three years
since she left me and I still mourn her.

You can cry on our shoulders. Everyone here is understanding
to the special love you felt for your cat.

    Donna,

My sympathies on the loss of your kitty. She was very lucky to
have had such a wonderful person as you taking care of her and
    giving her a good life.

Andie and I are very sorry. I know what it feels like, having had
to say goodbye to my little girl, Cassie, about 3 years ago.

    Donna,

I am so sorry for your loss.. I know that there really isn't any
comfort that can be said.. Gloria thanks you and is looking down on
you.. She is in heaven now with my Tayna and Rocky. They are all
having so much fun up there and I am sure that we will see them

Sorry for your loss, but you did the right thing. I had to go through
it with my 21 year old Daffy several years back, and I still miss her
like mad, as I miss all my little furry faces that I had to part with
over the years. I am looking forward to seeing them all again at
Rainbrow Bridge, where Gloria will be waiting for you.

    Our thoughts are with you.

Thanks so much for your notes. Each day gets a little better. I knew
that I would be losing Gloria due to the cancer and decided early on to
keep her ashes. I think knowing that I'll still have a part of her
makes it easier. She was my princess and always very elegant so I wanted
to do something special for her.

I'm sure the 7 kitties I have at home will see me through this. Again,
thank you so much for caring.

Donna, My deepest sympathies, losing a dear furry friend is never
easy. But you made the right choice. I hope that time will

    Donna,

I cried for you when I read your note about Gloria. Knowing that she
is not suffering will ease your pain in time. The good memories will
surface and replace the sadness you are feeling now; Gloria lived in
a wonderful home with one of the most caring, gracious ladies I know!
She was happy then, and she is happy now......hugs to you from me
    and Lady Di!!

    Your friend - Eloise
