962.0. "Favoring right front leg" by WMOIS::GILLIGAN (Renegades,rebels & rogues) Tue Dec 19 1995 09:07

Hi everyone, I need some of your thoughts on this: Hercules (my 7
year old kitty) has been favoring his right front leg for a few days
now, not quite a week. It's noticeable when he walks, but more so when
he's running (like into the kitchen to be fed). It also hurts him when
he jumps off his large scratching post. He doesn't cry out though.
I've checked his legs for bumps/lumps and pressed in certain areas
(what he'll allow anyway, he's not too 'touchable') and both legs feel
the same and nothing seems to hurt when pressed. I checked his paws
also and everything seems to be okay there, but I didn't really check
all that closely only because he'll only take so much poking and
prodding. I just took him to the vet 2 weeks ago for his regular shots
and everything was fine. Other than this little limp he's alert,
happy, hungry, wants to play, etc., but I hate that he seems to be
    hurting.

    Any thoughts??

    Thanks,

    Karen & Hercules

    Karen,,,

It could be as simple as he jumped off something and slightly
hurt it OR something could be stuck in his paw pad OR the
limp could be just the first sign of a bigger problem OR he
could have a little arthritis in the leg.

If you find he is still limping in a few days...I think a vet
visit will help determine what the problem is. Just keep your
eyes on him to see if it gets any worse.

I think this is a pretty long time. I would take him to the
    vet, myself.

I second the vote for the vet visit. If it doesn't seem to have
improved at this point, might as well play it safe & get it checked
    out.
962.4I called....WMOIS::GILLIGANRenegades,rebels & roguesFri Dec 22 1995 09:1312
Hi, I called the vet yesterday, told him the symptoms, and he said to
wait a couple more days to see if it improves. I did look closer at
his pad and noticed that one of his nails looked torn off - not
completely, but it was a lot shorter than the other ones. He could
have ripped it off and it's still a little tender. I'm going to see
how he is over the weekend. He's still running around chasing the
paper balls we throw for him and eating well, etc., so I'm hoping it's
    just the tender nail.

    Thanks for the responses....

    Karen,

Do you have one of those circular plastic toys with a ball inside?
A friend of mine, had a similar problem with one of her cats that
loved to bat the ball around inside one of those circular plastic
toys. Her cat loved the toy and played with it all the time, causing
a sprained muscle in the leg. When she removed the toy, the cat's
leg healed and no more limping.

Hi Eleanor, no he doesn't have those kinds of toys, but thanks for the
input. He's actually doing better, not much of a limp unless he's been
napping for awhile and just getting up. I think it's either arthritis
or that nail that was really short. Either way, he's doing fine and
ran around on Christmas chasing all the rolled up Christmas paper!

    Thanks,
    Karen
