My 2 1/2 year old altered male spent all day Saturday on my couch with his head on a pillow. Sunday morning, he was the same, wouldn't eat or drink, so I brought him to Tufts. He has been on iv's and antibiotics, and tested for everything my money could buy. So far, his only symptom is a 105 fever. The vet said that his fever broke last night, but was still over 103. Does anybody have any ideas? He has retested negative for almost everything, we are still waiting for the test on toxoplasma and one of the Feline viruses. She said that they don't have good outcomes with cats that run these fevers. She may send him home with it and he may continue to have them, or it could be a one time virus. Count Basie has never been sick, except for an occasional hairball cough. He is my big 14 pound good humor man. I visited last night, cried the whole time I was there, at the site of his shaved belly (ultrasound exam?) and ungroomed coat. The vet says the visits are important, his fever broke right after my daughter and I left last night. I was wondering if there were others outthere with a similar experience and what the outcome was. Thanks. Thanks.

Gee, this reminds me of a year or so ago, when several cats got unexplained high fevers. I believe they all recovered, but none of their vets ever figured out what had been wrong. Please let us know how your kitty is doing, Karen

p.s. If he does test positive for a virus, keep in mind that (I think) those tests are hard to interpret. If I remember correctly, there's a lot of confusion about what it actually means in terms of seriousness. When my cats have had to be at the vets for any prolonged period, I've brought a comb with me and groomed them there; ditto when they haven't felt well at home. I think it makes them feel better.

Count Basie is home again, having gotten rid of the high fever, and me having gotten rid of several hundred dollars. All the tests came back negative, so it was either viral or a bacterial infection, since it is responding to antibiotics. The vet noticed that he had a large heart, get a consult from the cardiologist, and they recommended an echo-cardiogram, another $130. Having maxed out the Visa gold, I took the kid home and postponed the test. She said it could be cardiomyopathy, whcih I read about in this file, or that he just has a big heart - he's a big kid. I've decided that in a couple of months maybe we'll go back for the test, but I just wanted to get him home. He passed the night on my bed, his crabby sister Miss Sarah Vaughan even let him - her turf, and ate a small amount of food. I took his temp and it was 100.4, which was good. Apart from being sleepy and shaved like a prize poodle, it looks like everything will turn out alright. I'm happy but concerned that something like a 105.1 fever can seem to come on so suddenly.

Bailey used to be prone to those non-specific high fevers. We got to the point with her that we treated the symptoms instead of testing everything. However, I do recommend getting the test for cardio. Bailey did have cardio. I lost her to it when she was 6 years old. Jan |
