931.0. "A kitten and his dad needs help!!!!" by TPSYS::CROSS () Mon Aug 28 1995 10:14

    Hi everyone,

I haven't been in the file for so long now, that I'm sure you don't
even remember me any longer (especially all the new readers of FELINE).
But with work and 18 cats in the house, I'm very very busy! :-))))

I have a really sad tale with a somewhat happy ending that I was hoping
to share with you guys....I was also hoping that together we could help
    someone.

My husband works with a really nice man at Foreign Motors West in
Natick, Ma. This man, Barry Pelletier, and his wife love cats. They
have eight in their home. About a week and a half ago, a little kitten
showed up on their doorstep, and (as all of us would do) he and his wife
took the little waif in to give it a home. They placed the kitten in
their cellar for the nite till they could arrange for a vet appointment
to test for Felv/FIV and to get the necessary vaccines.

The next morning, the wife went downstairs to check on the kitten and
found the stairway covered with blood. Alarmed she raced to check on
the kitten, only to find him playing happily with a toy in the corner.
Thinking perhaps the kitten had found a mouse, she cleaned up the
blood, fed the kitten, and went back upstairs. Three hours later, she
again went down to play with the kitten and AGAIN found the stairway
covered in blood. This time she found the kitten in the corner,
blowing bubbles of blood. Frantic, she called the vet who told her to
    bring in the kitten immediately.

The vet found that the kitten had consumed a rodent that had been
poisoned. The poison was causing the poor thing's veins and organs to
become permeable and the kitten was hemmorraging. The vet wanted to
know what she and Barry wanted to do. Barry's answer was simple, "Save
him." They already loved the kitten, and as Barry said, "If your child
got into a poison, would you have the child put down?" I guess when
you love animals as much as we do, they are just as important as human
    beings.

So far, at this writing, the bill is at $600. Barry is a mechanic, and
his wife doesn't work as she is at home with their three young
children. They have 8 cats to feed as well. This bill has far
exceeded what they had hoped it would be.

When Barry told me the story, I told him I would see if the FELINERS
would be willing to help out a bit. I remember we used to have (don't
know if we still do) a Silver Lining Memorial fund. It may or may not
be appropriate, so I have given Barry's address below for anyone who
would like to send a small donation to help him out, please do so.
It would mean the world to him..... and to the little kitten who is
still in the hospital on IV's. He's going to make it....but it will be
    a slow recovery.

    Thanks for listening....

    Nancy

931.2Help for KittenLJSRV1::MARXWed Aug 30 1995 13:3812
This story really touched me because of the predicament I found myself
in back in January when I rescued Amber, the Great Dane, and found out
that it was going to cost a lot of money to get her leg fixed. So many
people responded and helped with the finances that I want to give
something back. I responded to Nancy off-line to let her know that I
would send these people a donation to help defray the cost for this
kitten. I hope others will feel led to help.

    Regards,

Nancy:

Some folks might prefer to send donations directly to the vet on behalf of
the kitten, so maybe it would be a good idea to post the name and address of
the vet in charge of this little tyke.

Thanks for posting this; we certainly need more caring people like Barry and
his family!
931.4I don't want KI-KI to end up like that!BIGQ::MARCHANDSat Sep 02 1995 15:5839

      Nancy:

I'm not glad this happened, but glad the kitten can be saved.

I think it may have just saved my grey cat. My son and daughter
and I just cleaned out the shed. I was going to put down something
on the floor and we would be putting boxes in there for storage. I
mentioned to my daughter that I was going to buy some rat poison.
I found the remains of a dead rat while sweeping the floor. She
said. "Why don't I find out if that's a good idea, you know how
KI-KI likes to go hunting and he's bound to come in here looking
when the doors opened." I said. "Okay, let's find out if that's
    a good idea or not."

After reading this sad story tonight I know that I definately
won't buy the poison. If KI-KI sees a rat, and it's been poisoned,
he'll be one sick cat! I certainly don't want that. He's mainly
my grandson's cat. He's about 3 years old and my grandson is 5 years
old. His name is KI-KI because that's what my grandson named him.
He would try to say "Here kitty kitty." but would say "Here ki- ki"
instead. So, he's got that for a name. He's a beautiful big dark
grey cat with green eyes. He's a great rat hunter. He brought me
one for a gift once. Of course I don't think he understood why
I wasn't 'honored' with it. My daughter later told me he put it
in front of me to show me how much he loved me. We live in
a wooded area and there are lots of mice around. I certainly wouldn't
want him to catch one that may have gotten into poison in the
shed. Especially if I put it there. I couldn't live with myself.

I was looking through the file when I saw the title and had
to see what that was about first before I looked under 'rat poison'.
I needn't look any further on the subject.

        Thanks,

        Rosie

p.s. This certainly deserves a donation from me.

The Hon. Colonel Sebastian Moran, DROFFC, is pleased to honor this
rescue of one of his troops. He has dispatched his allowance. (And his
mother has decided not to put down anything nasty to get rid of the
    moles, just in case!).

-< UPDATE on the kitten >-

I just wanted to update everyone on this kitten. Barry told my husband
yesterday that the kitten was sent home on Wednesday nite of this week. He is
perky and on the road to health. He will NOT let Barry and his wife alone.
Wherever they go, he goes. He follows them around the house and insists on
sleeping with them at nite...mostly wedged between Barry's legs where the
kitten proceeds to spend the evening chasing his own tail. One nite, Barry
decided to not interfere with the game, and went downstairs to sleep on the
couch. The kitten got the bed....Barry gets the couch! Sound familiar?
:-))))

Anyway, Barry wanted to thank those who have sent him and his wife donations.
Every little bit helps. To the person who responded to me with regards to the
Vet's address...that's a great idea. I will find out from Barry the name and
address of the vet. Donations are still welcome, as you might expect. So far,
the feliners have sent approximately $40. Barry's wife was totally amazed
that such a group of people exisited...that there were folks out there who
really cared about their situation, and who loved their pets as much as they
did.

BTW, to those who think of rat poisoning, do think again. I work weekends at
Weston Nursery, and they recently had to use poisoning. Our nursery cat,
Azalea, was removed from the site for four weeks, to avoid having her ingest a
poisoned rats/mice who may still be alive. It's not the dead rats/mice they
were concerned about, since most cats avoid dead prey. But poisons will wreak
havoc, not only on the animals they are meant for (I still disapprove the
senseless killing of ANY animal) but also on the animals who hunt them.

Nancy

P.S. I will post the address of the vet early next week!

931.7Happy endings, I love em:-):-):-)TROOA::TEMPLETONWill wonders never cease!!!Sun Sep 10 1995 20:5524
We went through a very bad 72 hours because of forgotten mouse poison.

I came home from work to find Syd (my husband) sweeping the kitchen
floor, this is a first I thought, but then he told me he had come in
from mowing the lawn to find the new kitten batting a box of mouse
    poison around the floor.
Our last cat was sixteen when she died and would watch the field mice
that got into the house with mild interest and then dose off, so
after the mice started to do a song and dance for us in the living
room, we desided to do something about it.

We thought we had got rid of the boxes we had set out but kittens being
kittens, he had managed to find one.

It is not a very pleasent thought that we might have been the cause of
killing a very pretty, funny, loving animal.

Needless to say, he is okay, and I will think twice about finding ways
of getting rid of unwanted visitors

Glad to here everything worked out well for you Barry.
