Of course, by having the word "porn" in their page title, I bet they

someone recently decided to boost the number of hits his page got by
putting the works "sex" and something... (I forget if the other word
was "porn" or "drugs", but you get the idea) in the page title (this is
what gets searched by most of the web-spiders out there). All at once,
the number of hits to his page tripled!
from the kitty-porn page, follow the link to the FMO (feline Mafia

following poem. Made my eyes well up... but thought it would be

Poem: For Sparky (RIP 1993), on his birthday
Today I dreamt of four white feet dancing,
and golden eyes winked at me.
My heart called out to that sweet, wild, free spirit,
"Come back, come home! Don't leave me."
Today I dreamt of a remembered face,
and golden eyes winked at me.
I wept selfishly to see the joy there,
"Come back, come home! Don't leave me."
Today I saw that which I had not ever seen--
Bright orange, glowing white: an angel in my dream.
"Sweet spirit, must I let go, let you free?"
Golden eyes winked-- as four white feet danced away.

| Found this on a web page through Yahoo. Went through the "pets" link

Unfortunately, I had to go to another site to fix the results of a
power failure and the PC with the web info is back in WRO. Let me know
if you want it and I can get it off the PC when I get back.
Enjoy!
Cats in space
Roots
Why is it that the first we hear of the cat is when it appears in Egypt
around 2,000 B.C. as the living embodiment of the goddess Bast? The dog was
domesticated... comfortably ensconced as man's adoring servant, catching
frisbees and letting his tongue loll unattractively out of his mouth, long
before the cat arrived on the scene. Why? Where was the cat? Why are there
no images of cats in cave paintings? Why is the Bible silent on the subject?
It's quite simple, really. Cats are not from around here. We know now that
our planet was visited long ago by astronauts from a planet more
intellectually advanced than ours. There is strong evidence to suggest that
the planet what the Planet Hsif, and that cats were those ancient
astronauts.
Say these cats arrive in pyramid-shaped space shuttles, they land, they
reconnoiter, and someone's beeper goes off... there is an emergency at home
on the Planet Hsif. Everyone drops what they are doing, the bulk of the team
is hurriedly picked up by the mother ship, leaving a token force behind to
gather artifacts and guard the pyramid shuttles. The main team plans to
return to earth to complete their mission at the first opportunity. But
their return is stymied... first by a civil war, later by budget cuts.
Those astronauts left behind await the return of their team with great
patience... perhaps they stare at a spot for a year or so and then their
situation hits them. They have been abandoned. They growl, they weep, they
nap, and then with the pragmatism that characterizes their people, they
proceed to damage control. Determined to blend in, in spite of their unusual
features (they know they are fabulous looking and this will cause jealousy),
the astronauts assess the needs of the Egyptian culture and develop a coping
strategy.
They will become goddesses, rat killers, and charming domestic companions
all at the same time. Indispensable to Egyptian society, they are indulged
and pampered, their lives protected by law. In Egypt the punishment for
killing a cat, even accidentally, was death. Families who lost their cats
displayed their grief by ripping their clothes and shaving off their
eyebrows. It's all been downhill since then... no wonder cats sometimes have
that whiny sound in their voices.
This scenario seems to me easier to swallow than the one history gives us:
that the pyramids were built by laborers with only primitive technology and
without cranes or fork lifts.
You doubt it? All cats evidence a vestigial memory of their origin. Try this
experiment: bring three cats together in a room, and you will find that no
matter where they are set down, they will gravitate toward each other and
automatically arrange themselves into the shape of a pyramid.
There is evidence to suggest that hairballs are actually a very
sophisticated means of communication and that their variety, time of day and
frequency of appearance are significant. Cats emit hairballs to signal to
their people in much the same way that shipwrecked travelers build huge
bonfires on the beach in hope of attracting the attention of rescue planes.
How frustrating it must be when we rush to blot out all signs of these
communiques. Perhaps cats feel like prisoners who mark the days of captivity
on the walls of their cells, only to have their sadistic jailers rub out the
signs of their efforts as soon as they appear. I hope not. I hope they
understand that we mean them no harm, that in this as in many other things,
we just don't have a clue.
Some cats have made it back to Hsif. In 1988 one of our major tabloids
headlined the news that hundreds of cats were disappearing, kidnapped by
aliens. Au contraire, I don't think so. They haven't been kidnapped; they've
been repatriated. We miss you guys, but we know that you're truely happy at
last.

out (and waits 10 seconds before raking), what happens if cat #2
jumps in just as #1 jumps out? If cat #2 is motionless in his

negative reinforcement for box use :-)
Concern #2 is that my "boys" are accustomed to their covered box, and
they kick up a storm; some of the litter still gets out the door. I
wonder how much litter would be left to be raked!
Concern #3, I've never bought the clumping stuff, don't know if the

| Re: .34 seem to remember being warned away from it
The clumping litter caused my cat Sweetie real problems with his
respiratory condition. Also reported here was a severe eye
irritation that baffled a vet until the owner changed back to
regular litter and the eye problem disappeared. Out on
rec.pets.cats, if I remember correctly, someone lost two litters
of kittens and didn't know why until an autopsy on the second litter
showed the kitten had a great deal of the clumping litter blocking
its innards. The key seems to be that this stuff locks on to any
moisture and clumps; it doesn't care if the moisture is on the
eyeball or lung or the tongue of a kitten grooming its fur, etc.

867.37 | I had the same concerns | CATMAX::SKALTSIS | Deb | Wed Aug 07 1996 15:06 | 53 |
| I had the same concerns and I asked the same questions:
>What I was wondering is, if the "electric eye" senses the cat jumping
>out (and waits 10 seconds before raking), what happens if cat #2
>jumps in just as #1 jumps out?
The person I spoke to said that the electic eye waits for some amount
of time before scooping; It isn't a motion detector, but an "object in
the way detector.
>Concern #2 is that my "boys" are accustomed to their covered box, and
>they kick up a storm; some of the litter still gets out the door. I
>wonder how much litter would be left to be raked!
Another concern I have as I have a couple of "sprayers", (but at least
they spray in the box!), and a couple that are very overzelous when
covering. I was told that while the box wasn't covered, it has *very*
high sides that should limit the scattering problem and avoid the
spraying problem. You do have to add some litter every few days which
you would do anyway with clumping litter.
>Concern #3, I've never bought the clumping stuff, don't know if the
>boys would like it, and seem to remember being warned away from it
>in this file (for reasons unremembered).
This was the biggie for me, and I'm going to watch things very closely.
My boys can be *very* fussy about their litter (and Zoe can be a
perfect pain in the rear-end; she likes the scented stuff, and when I
change the litter she actually rolls in it so that she becomes
"perfumed"; instead of marking the box, she has the box mark her).
The cement like qualities of the clumping litter have always bothered me,
which is why I've never used the clumping litter. However, in the past
year, I've had 3 go rounds of everyone comming down with a cold. I know
that one place that cats can pass germs is in the box, and I'm hoping that if whatever they
deposit in the box is scooped away before anyone else uses it, it
eliminates some germ transfer. That said, if anyone comes down with a
URI, I won't hesitate to put these boxes away for a while and go back
to litter.
Another thing I am wondering about is cleaning; I use liners but still
bleach the box each time; I suspect that I can periodically remove the
litter in the box and wipe things down with bleach; Given that I have
box sprayers, I'd like to still do this. I hope that bleach doesn't
react with the clumping litter.
One other thing; they said that with 8 cats and 1 box, they would
anticipate replacing the replaceable box eery 4 or 5 days; With two
boxes, a week to a week and a half. Considering I change 5 boxes
weekly (60 lbs of litter), I'm hoping that this will save some wear and
tear on my back :-)
Deb
|
867.38 | | MPGS::WOOLNER | Your dinner is in the supermarket | Thu Aug 08 1996 06:45 | 14 |
| Thanks, Deb, this is fascinating! I remember the product description
saying that you could replace the receptacle whenever it's full *or*
you could keep emptying [and cleaning] and replacing it for up to a year.
Maybe that 1-year limit is a function of the plastic degrading over
time from ammonia or whatever (wild guess). So maybe it's not a function
of the number of cats (volume of "output") but a sort of half-life of
the receptacle.
Last night I was flipping through a Hammacher-Schlemmer (sp?) catalog
and saw the box! (Same price.) The descriptive text said "clumping litter
recommended"... which seems to allow for the possibility of using clay
litter. Did the phone rep say anything about that?
Leslie
|
867.39 | | CATMAX::SKALTSIS | Deb | Thu Aug 08 1996 07:27 | 34 |
| The phone rep didn't mention use of non-clumping litter. The description
on the web page specifies clumping litter, and says you get better results
with the premium clumping litter. I think that the problem is that if
you scoop up nonclumping litter, the ball has more of a tendency to
break apart, thus spreading the dirty litter around. I'm told by
friends that use it that the premium clumping litter clumps (cements
itself) togeather more solidly, so I would imagine that might be why
they reccommond it.
Another problem with regular litter with this system *might* be that
the particles are not fine enough to sift thru the rake, and all of
your litter would disappear real fast? (I don't know if this is the
case).
This is a bit of a tangent, but I have some experience with other "self
cleaning" litter boxes. A few years ago, I bought one of those "Kitty
priveys". It was a box with slats on the bottom, sitting on another box.
The litter was corn-cob based, and covered with parafin. The basic
marketing message was it was that the litter never needed replacing.
The cats LOVED it, but I had a few problems with it. The urine pan would
be full by the end of the day; so full, I had to bail it out to empty it.
And the house would smell like urine when I came home (because basicly
there was a pan of litter sitting around. Same thing when I got up in
the morning. Also, the replacement litter was expensive. Yes, all you had
to do was rinse it out with a bleach/cold water combo one a week or so,
but cats also deposit solid waste into their boxes, and sometimes bury it.
This litter stuck to the stools, so, it got flushed away with the waste.
At $6 + shipping per box, this got REAL expensive fast. This might have
beemn a reasonable and cost effective solution for a 1 or 2 cat
household, but not for us. I might add, though, that the cats liked it
so much, they stopped using the regular boxes.

I switched to clumping litter about a year ago. Overall, I prefer it
to the traditional style clay litter, and the cats don't seem to care
one way or the other.
The down side of clumping litter:
1) it tracks more easily; much more and much further. This is a real
problem.
2) small (pea-sized at worst) clumps of it can stick to the cat's
"fanny fur" (especially long-haired cats), and it often gets stuck
between their paw pads
3) the cardboard boxes (or plastic jugs) it comes in are less conveniently
disposed of than the clay litter's paper sacks.
I haven't found a solution to the tracking problem. I solve 2 as
necessary by combing the clumps out and periodically checking their paw
pads. The cardboard boxes get sliced up and flattened for disposal.
I have had no problems with the cats eating or inhaling it; it's
relatively dust free (seems to raise less dust than the clay litter).
I think the horror stories that circulate about clumping litter are
either apocryphal ("urban legends") or extremely rare exceptional
cases.
I doubt the self cleaning box will work with clay litter; none of the
clay litters I've ever used clump enough when wet with urine to be
extracted as clumps. I'd guess the comb will just break them up and
though the solid waste will get swept up, you'll just end up with an
increasingly soggy mess of urine soaked clay left behind.
I may have to go back to clay litter because of the tracking problem,
though keeping their litter boxes clean is much easier with the
clumping litter.

| Len,
I have a question about clumping litter when you combine the
characteristics that you mention in #1 and 2. I'm concerned that when
this stuff gets tracked across my hardwood floors, ceramic tiles or
rugs, if the surface is a bit damp, will the tracked litter cement
itself to the wood/carpet/tile and have to be scraped off? Or does it
just clump to itself, and I can sweep/vaccuum it up?
(hopefully I'm worried about nothing)

867.42 | Hard Surfaces OK, Rugs Can Be Messy | PCBUOA::FEHSKENS | len - reformed architect | Thu Aug 08 1996 11:31 | 22 |
|
If it gets wet, it sticks to anything. However, it easily washes off,
and doesn't require scraping. Merlin regularly tracks it into the
bathtub, where he goes hunting for water droplets to lick up.
This is why I'm skeptical of the stories of cats cementing their innards
with the stuff. They'd have to ingest an awful lot of it, in a very short
time, or be seriously dehydrated; when there's a lot more fluid than
clumping litter, the soluble adhesive just dissolves and you're left with
something that's basically sand, i.e., no worse than the dust or
granules of ordinary clay litter, though the particles are smaller.
Rugs can be a problem though; I have had a few instances where a cat has
thrown up on an accumulation of the stuff on a rug (like right in front
of the litter box when I've been lax about vacuuming up the tracked out
stuff). This can be very difficult to clean up, as the stuff cements
itself to the rug backing, and it can take a lot of water and scrubbing
to get it all out. My litter boxes are in a carpetted closet, a practice
which I now strongly discourage. Put something under them.

washable and if they get ruined, I won't be upset. I guess I'll put
these under the other one, which is going into the upstairs bathroom,
too.
thanks,
Deb

But - don't try to connect today (4.1.97). It appears that we might
have had a power hit during last night's storm and I can't get into the
office to restart my web server.

| Gita,
What cute kitties...I especially love the one under the Xmas tree, but can't
figure out who she is. Is she a Maine Coon?
Judy, I can't wait to explore that kitty and the garden page, great site...
thanks!

| O.K., following the home page links I see it's Stevie Ray under the tree!
I got confused because on the top photo it said he was flying, then it looks
"*she's* always dressed for any ocaasion" was referring to the same cat.
Anyway, Zachary and Kensie are really knockouts! Some of the most exquisite
kitties I've ever seen!

| Zachary humbly (!) accepts your compliments.
When I get a chance, I'll fix the text on Stevie Ray and Layla's page
so it's not so confusing as to who is who. I just figured that since
Layla is a tuxedo cat, she'd always dressed up!

I've written to these people and am hoping to get a siamese cat from them, but
would love to see their Bengals just to see!

| For more Bengals on the web try http://www.defiant.net
I bought the kitten on the first page (a leopard spotted bengal).
She is a real sweetie. Senga is 12 weeks old now and is always with
her humans when they are home. She plays a mean game of fetch. We got
this yarn ball with pieces of foil in it and she loves it. She'll
usually fetch it as many times as I care to throw it. I haven't quite
got her swimming yet, but I hear Bengals have been known to take a dip.

| Senga is beautiful!!!
I loved seeing the Bengals when I went to pick out my siamese. One of them
leaped right onto my shoulder. It was quite a surprise since my back was
turned to her! What an athletic breed...I think you're going to have your
hands full, but it should certainly be entertaining and amusing! Is she
very affectionate as far as cuddling is concerned?

| Well its hard to tell how they'll turn out in the cuddle department
based on their kitten behavior, but so far it looks good. She purrs
and cuddles constantly. I really like the "fetch" game she plays. I
once had another cat that would chase anything that chocolate had been
in, but it was a 50/50 proposition as to whether he would bring it
back for another toss. Bengals are supposed to be fond of water too,
but Senga hasn't shown much interest yet.
Bengals are supposed to be big jumpers too, but that might be part
of the "wild cat" myth. Most young Bengals today are 10+ generations
from an Asian Leopard Cat.
I hope you enjoy your Siamese kitten. I have an apple headed
Siamese cat too (though she was a stray and I don't know if she is
100% pure). I had wandered across the picture of the 15+ kittens in
the basket a few months ago. I wonder how they ever got them to all
sit still long enough for a picture?

| Brian,
It sure sounds like she'll be sweet! I read on one of the Bengal pages that
they can jump 6' high with no trouble!
My siamese Lynxpoint, Buki, used to love to play fetch when he was a kitten.
He'd play for over an hour! It all started when I threw his toy across the
room when I was tired of playing with him!
I don't know how they got all those kittens to sit still either!

I remember seeing an All About Cats article on one of those pictures -
I think they feed all the kittens so they're dozy, pick 'em up as they
drop off, and put them in position then about 5-10 minutes later
someone makes a noise that wakes them up.. and the photo is taken.

| Aha! That seems to be a logical explanation!
My Dad thought maybe they took a picture of one kitten and then used
trick photography, but the facial features and coloring dfeinitely had
variations!
