817.0. "WHAT A WEEK!" by ICS::GROEZINGER () Fri Oct 14 1994 11:44

    I took my Andie to the Acton Emergency Hospital last Saturday
    night because I noticed blood and the fact that she was making
    frequent trips to the litterbox with no results. To make a long
    story short, she was diagnosed with FUS and is doing much better
    on the antibiotics and the IAMs diet. As if that wasn't enough,
    the next day she started sneezing and coughing and ended up
    catching my cold! I know, I know. No vet will ever agree with
    me, but I believe she caught it from me. I took her again to the
    vets last night because she is so miserable. He gave me more
    antibiotics and advised me to continue the extra TLC. Its sooooo
    pitiful! I wish I could teach her to breadth out of her mouth
    rather than suffer trying to breadth through that stuffed up nose
    of hers :-( Anyway, she isn't a whole lot better today, but boy
    is she getting lots of care, love and medicine!

    My poor Andie. I was going to put a little VICKS on her nose,
    but didn't want to upset her more last night. Instead I agreed
    to let her lay on my side of the bed with the electric blanket
    all night to stay warm. She slept well but I worried just the
    same.

    I just needed to let everyone know my little Andie has had quite
    a week of it!

    Thank you, everyone,

    Judie

Judie,

I hope Andie is feeling better really soon. I'm so sorry to hear about the FUS.

    Did your vet give you any decongestant for your cat? My vet did
    this when Onyx and Joey had their colds. I'd give them 1/4 tablet.
    It seemed to help a bit.

    Yeah, the vet probably wouldn't agree but I swear I caught my cold
    from Joey. He turned and sneezed in my face one day as I was holding
    and comforting the poor sick boy. A few days later I came down with
    a cold. Gives me the impression that colds can be passed on via our
    pets.

817.3But there are some that CAN catch!HOTLNE::CORMIERFri Oct 14 1994 12:205
    Now that's funny, but my vet said that pets CAN catch some viruses
    from us. My Dad had a very bad cold once with laryngitis, and his
    dog ended up with the identical symptoms 1 week later, right down
    to the laryngitis!
    Sorry about Andie. Hope she's feeling better.

    poor little Andie. My vet has suggested to me to put a tiny
    drop of Afrin nose spray (which is a natural salt/water mixture) in
    my cats nose when it is so stuffed, but I'll tell it's NOT an easy
    task!!! I have also been told to put a very small amount of Vicks
    under his his chin in a place where he can't easily lap it off.

    Poor baby...I hope he is feeling better soon.

    I think she could have "caught cold" from having her immune system so
    stressed and perhaps from you. Those vets! My vet once recommended
    (spelling is wrong here) Neo-Synefrin - the weakest children's strength
    - for my cats stuffy noses and it worked wonders (drops not spray,
    although I couldn't imagine using a spray on a cat).

    Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

817.6they work!ROMEOS::BALZERMAWed Nov 02 1994 10:2010

    Cyndi,

    I used the Neo-Synepherine (or whatever) drops for Callie as well, and
    it was amazing how quickly it helped. Being an Exotic, she has teenie
    nostrils and I can not begin to imagine trying to use a spray!!!! :'D
