774.0. "Unsolved Mysteries story" by GOOEY::JUDY (Trip the firelight) Thu Jun 30 1994 12:06

Did anyone watch Unsolved Mysteries last night? A couple
of their stories were on animals who traveled unbelievable
distances to be reunited with their people. The first one
was a cat that jumped out of a moving van window when her
owner had pulled into a rest area to sleep for the night.
The woman and her brother searched for an hour but they
had to leave and travel another 200 miles to her new home.
A new co-worker that knew of the lost cat gave the woman
a drawing of a black cat to remember Nova by. The woman
colored in the eyes bright yellow and hung the picture up
over her desk. A few weeks later she found two stray
cats outside her office building. One of them was her
cat! She identified her by 5 distinguishing marks. The
cat traveled 200 miles from where she got lost to the new
    	city her owner was in.

The other one was about a collie. She and another dog
belonging to a family didn't return from a run in the
woods at the family cabin. Unfortunately, a forest fire
broke out and the family had to evacuate the area without
the dogs. The seven year old daughter was devastated as
she had grown up with the dogs and Lady was her favorite.
She prayed every night for Lady to come home. Weeks later
a collie wandered into the yard of an older couple, they
checked her tags and called the owners. She had traveled
150 miles to get home. Why one dog made it and the other
one didn't they don't know but they're hoping that Wolfka
was taken in by someone else and has a new home.

They had an animal behaviorist on that said there is a
such a strong bond between animals and their owners that
they have a mental telepathy of sorts and that's how
some animals can find their way back home.

They were really good stories. Brought tears to my eyes
    	and everything. =)

The cat story seemed hard to believe. I mean how did the cat know
where they were moving to? Some special cat.

We also had a dog named Lady when I was a teenager. When my grand-
mother had a stoke my parents went to live with her and they
took Lady with them. Somehow she got out of the back yard. We
had the entire family, neighbors etc. looking and never could
        find her.

A couple months later, after my parents had moved back to their
own home, she showed up. It was GREAT!!! We were all sitting
there watching TV and I heard her dog tags rattle and here she came
up the street. I'm pretty sure Dad cooked her a T-bone that night!

She had a broken tail (which apparently happened early on) and
was thin, but otherwise alright. Our vet said she probably started
walking around my grandmother' neighborhood and got confused. So
she started going in circles progressing to bigger and bigger circles
until she finally found home. I sure would love to have another
        like her!

Yes, I saw that. It reminded me of the "Incredible Journey".
That was a really nice movie. Better than the recent one with
    the talking dogs.

I had a kitten yrs ago that I got from a friend in Marlboro, MA.
I lived in Hudson, MA (about a 20min car ride). Once day the
cat was gone..I looked and looked. I was very upset, I had never
lost a cat. About 2 weeks later, the kitten showed up back at
its owners...the kitten was fine, but her nails were quite dull!

So, I agreed to let the original owner keep her, since she wanted
    to be there so bad.

I read a story last night Woman's World magazine
about a female doberman that couldn't have puppies
(she's a hemophiliac and would bleed to death) and
adopted and nursed 4 abandoned kittens! A little
girl found 4 kittens and the dead momma cat =( so
she brought the kittens home. They weren't sure how
Angel (the dog) would do with them because she chases
the neighbor's cat. But the little girl put the kittens
next to her one at a time and Angel treated them as if
she had given birth to them. She was a little lost when
three of the kittens were given to good homes at the right
age but the family kept one of the kittens and Angel lavishes
    	him with attention.

I love stories like this. =)

I am the proud owner of a Beautiful doberman (and a cat).
I'm glad to see stories of dobermans other than the usual "Bad Breed"
stories.

Thanks
