| | If you're flying, be sure to find out if you can put your kitty in her
pet taxi under your seat & not in cargo. I just read a terrible
article in the paper which indicates that airlines tend to feel that a
few pet deaths during flight are inevitable & that a cash settlement is
sufficient recompense for the loss of a pet. Sorry to be negative &
you probably already know better, but I'm a natural-born worrier.

| 720.2 | U.K. has strict quarantine | USPMLO::GPELLETIER |  | Fri Mar 18 1994 09:12 | 8 |
| | I believe the basenoter is asking about importing an animal into the
country and not merely the act of transporting it. I don't know about
Canada specifically, but I do know that the law is very strict for the
U.K. in general. The quarantine is six months and is intended to
prevent the entry of rabies into Great Britain. Ignoring or attempt-
ing to circumvent it could result in the destruction of the animal.

| | I can't imagine that Canadian's laws would be so strict, seeing as
it's virtually impossible to keep U.S. cats from crossing over the
border into Canada (Hmmm, Mr. Fluffy - passport please!!)

I'm sure they have some kinds of stipulations, but I would think there
wouldn't be any kind of quarantine period.

| 720.4 | certificate | WEORG::STUART |  | Fri Mar 18 1994 09:51 | 4 |
| | I believe you just have to have a certificate from a veterinarian
that states the cat has had a rabies vaccine within the past 6 (?)
months. Most Vets know what the rules are. I suggest you call
    your vet to be sure.

| | When going to a cat show in Canada, I needed a health certificate from
the vet stating that the cat is up on all it's shots, including rabies.
I just needed this to cross the border.

My brother took their cat with them when they emmigrated from the UK to
	Canada.
He had the shots done up-to-date, with a cert for the Vet. No
	Quarantine.
I'm not sure if the cert was for the flight or for immigration.
	It was simple and quick.

| | Likewise,
when I have shown cats in Canada you are required to bring a
certificate stating the animal is up to date on it's rabies
vaccine. A health certificate would be apropo too.

I have never had to produce these documents and have gone over a
several times. Just be prepared and keep them handy.

| | I took my 3 dogs on vacation with me through Canada, and before we
went, we called the Canadian Consul's office in Boston and they gave us
the scope... I think that at the time the requirement was pretty much
the same for both cats and dogs...

We had our rabies vaccination certificates, a copy of their health
records, and a note from the vet attesting to their good health. The
only thing that Canadian Customes did was made us promise not to LEAVE
any of the dogs in Canada.... U.S. Customs did ask for proof of origin,
but the certs, health records and rabies certs were more than enuff..

| | Thanks for advice from all of you. One thing I doubtif they exercise
different import requirements if the pet is exported from different
countries. I'll call up the Canadian Customs to check and I'll post the
result here if I have the reply.

| | I got the reply from Canadian Customs & Excise, so I posted here.

The cat must be accompanied by a cert endorsed by a vet accredited by the
national govt. The cert must state that the cat has been vaccinated against
rabies within not less than 30 days and not more than one year preceding
   importation into Canada.

Visual inspection of both the animal and the cert is required at the time of
arrival. There may be delay if the inspector is not available so they
suggest to make appointment with the local office and provide your flight
no. etc. Address to Director of Animal Health, Food Production and
   Inspection Branch, Agriculture Canada.

It looks pretty easy, and now I'd study on the airlines.
