Mod, Please move if need be... I have a question on something that Shilo is doing and has been doing since we got him. At first it seemed that he was was only doing this when he wanted my daughter to get up, but he did it last night while she was laying on the couch watching t.v. What he has been doing is, he gets on top of my daughter and starts to lick her cheek and then he gently bites at her eye lashes. While he is doing this he is also padding. After he has done this for a while he falls asleep. We really don't know what to think. Do you think that he was taken away from his mother to early? We got him when he was 12 weeks old. He seems like he is a happy go luck kittie. Thanks, *joyce

698.1 | A little padding, with a nip too! | AIMHI::BOYKO | Fri Jan 28 1994 07:23 | 9
My Lilac Point female is 9 years old, and when I am laying on the couch, she will come up on my chest and start padding as well. If I don't pay attention to her right away, she will take her paw gently and tap my nose. She sometimes takes a little nip on my nose as well, but very gently. I think its just her way of getting my attention, and saying, "here I am, pat me !" I really wouldn't be too concerned about her padding, either, a lot of cats do that. Nancy

The padding, or star-fishey paws as we call it, is a sign of affection and ownership, the cat is marking your daughter as his with the scent glands in its paws. Nipping is a sign of real affection; a mother cat will nip whiskers off a favorite kitten. One of our cats would rub her face in my daughters hair and then wash and pull at it. If this were your daughters boyfriend then I would be worried, as it's the cat then be assured kitty is in seventh heaven and really happy.

I agree witht he others... In fact, I've seen on some TV special and read somewhere that a cat that does this is making a 'substitute' mother out of the 'victim'. Some cats will do this with more than one member of a family. I do think that this may come from the fact that a kitten is taken from it's mother, but it's surely not anything negative... The 'kneading-paws' is a reflexive action that a kitten does when nursing, as the pushing of the paws stimulates milk flow... It is definitely a contented and happy action, usually accompanied by peacefully closed eyes and contented purring... JM

My three little ones all do some form of this. Robin likes to climb on my chest and lick my nose; Blueberry likes to lick my hair and eyebrows (I never realized how sensitive eyelids are until that raspy tongue scraped across mine!), and Rocky the hunk sneaks into bed at night to knead and slurp my neck. len. |
