583.1 | | MR4DEC::PGLADDING | Noters do it with a 8-) | Thu Aug 05 1993 10:08 | 15 |
| About 9-10 years ago, a DEC employee in my group won the human
hero award.
He was in the woods walking when he heard the howls of a dog in
pain. He found his dog, and a neighbor's dog entangled in each
other's collars and the neighbor's dog was choking. He happened
to have his Digital 10 year award pocketknife in his pocket, so
he used that to cut off the collars.
By that time, the neighbor's dog had passed out and wasn't breathing.
He gave the dog mouth to mouth and revived him!
It was neat to see someone that I knew win the award!

583.2 | SP "canine" units are special | SALES::LTRIPP | | Fri Aug 06 1993 07:22 | 17 |
| Just my take on it, and I know they proabably ARN'T qualified, the
State Police Canine unit. These dogs and handlers go far and beyond
the call of duty, being called out at all hours of the day and night,
yet these animals are really wonderful family pets.
I guess my feelings come from this morning's headlines looking for the
missing little girl in Sturbridge (MA). The canine units have been out
there looking since noon yesterday, and are back out there early this
morning, and some were out there all night on their own time even.
I have the SP frequency in my car scanner, and I heard a warning to the
cruisers this morning, to slow down in a certain vicinity because there
were "canine units near the road". Even their dispatcher seems to be
sensitive to the dogs. I've known a couple handlers and dogs
personally and have never seen so much loyalty.

583.3 | Woman who is rescuing the animals in the flooded area. | MARLIN::AIKEY | | Fri Aug 06 1993 08:45 | 9 |
| Does anyone remember the name of the woman that is out were the
flooding is going on? They had her on channel 5 one night last week.
She does most of this just out of the kindnest of her heart. No (or
little funding) involved. After watching her and then hearing about
the award I thought that she would be a very good candidate.
Wish I could remember what her name was.......

583.4 | Her name is Terri Crisp | USPMLO::GPELLETIER | | Mon Aug 09 1993 10:13 | 7 |
| Her name is Terri Crisp and she was the ABC Nightly News Person of the
Week two weeks ago. The story was datelined "St. Charles County,
Missouri," but I see that there is a town of St. Charles too. There
was some astonishing footage on ABC and CNN around that time: terrified
cats jumping into the water and swimming (!) away from rescuers; people
jumping in fully clothed to net them...

I think the MSPCA should give themselves an award, because
I was impressed with the quality of care and the cleanliness
of their facilities in Methuen. I stopped in on the back from
NH, and even with horses, a steer, a donkey, chickens, geese,
ducks, rabbits, g-pigs, kittens/cats, dogs and even 2 rats,
the place was *very* clean, no smell, and all looked in good
shape.
I was hard pressed not to come home with a few cats under one
arm, the Standardbred under the other, and the Clydesdale on
the roof! (8

583.6 | I agree; even the goats didn't smell. | EMASS::SKALTSIS | Deb | Tue Aug 17 1993 16:32 | 8 |
| I agree. They do a wonderful job up there, as well as taking care oif
the Nevins Hill Animal Cemetary which is across the street. I spent the
afternoon up there last month after Pip laying Pip to rest. Mr. Mullen
and the regular workers are very caring of how the animnals are kept.
If you go into the office, you will see a framed Cats Magizine cover of
a very pretty calico that was adopted from there.
