525.0. "I Witness Video" by GOOEY::JUDY (Reaching for a four leaf clover) Mon Mar 29 1993 07:16

    	Does anyone watch 'I Witness Video' ?? I was flipping the
    	channels last night and came across it. They were showing
    	a story about a fireman who revived a kitten! This baby
    	was tiny...probably six weeks old if that. He was blowing
    	into it's nose and pressing it's chest with his thumb to
    	get it to breathe. Then he took the oxygen mask and took
    	the mask part off so he could put the hose in the baby's
    	mouth. It worked! He adopted it and the guy that filmed
    	it adopted one of the others. It looked like they had just
    	found them somewhere or something...I missed the beginning
    	of the story.

    	It was so sweet!

    I saw less than you did Judy; I only caught that the firemen had
    adopted them and one was called Smudge and the other Blaze.
    Although I usually skip over stories that involve animals, I get too
    upset, I would be interested in finding out the whole story before
    summer reruns.
525.2Good ending!DELNI::MANDILEwith an eMon Mar 29 1993 07:4017
    I caught the whole thing.....it was filmed by a news cameraman....

    A trailer home caught on fire, and the fire department
    had put it out. They checked the place out to see if
    any humans were inside, and one of the firemen could hear
    kittens crying. Out of the litter, 1 kitten was in bad
    shape. The fireman started CPR on the kitten, trying to
    save it. Another fireman joined in by using the oxygen
    on the kitten, while the CPR was being done. After about
    15-20 mins of working on the kitten, a spark of life showed
    when the kitten moved it's legs. They continued CPR, and
    were able to bring the kitten back!

    The fireman adopted this kitten, naming him "Smudge". Smudge
    means in fireman lingo "a small fire". One of the other firemen
    who helped adopted another kitten from the litter, and named it
    "Blaze". (I think there were 4 kittens in the litter)

    I watched this program, and I wanted to hug that fireman! What a guy! I
    was in tears by the end of that segment! ;-) It didn't surprise me when
    they said he had adopted little "Smudge" though. It would have
    surprised me if he DIDN'T! ;-)

    Great story! Glad that camera man got it on film!

525.5A similar incident happened on our street..ISLNDS::FALLONMon Mar 29 1993 13:276
    You don't know where that happened do you? I live in a trailer park
    that had a fire in it last year. The woman who lived there had several
    cats ( I think she actually bred bengals or occicats). I heard that
    she was so upset about losing some of her animals that she had to be
    hospitalzed for her own protection. I guess she is doing fine now.

525.6Not Massachusetts I don't think... ;-)STUDIO::COLAIANNII think, therefore I think I amMon Mar 29 1993 13:479
    I don't remember where the incident happened, but none of the players
    had Massachusetts accents! ;-) The kittens looked like DSH tabbies. The
    little guy who got CPR performed on him was a real cutie, as were his
    siblings. They had no idea what was hapening to them, and they just
    huddled together. I don't know where mom cat was, they never mentioned
    her, but the kittens looked too young to be weaned yet, so I assume she
    was all right. (hopefully she's now spade though)

525.7Nice ending to a fire storyVIA::COLBURNMon Mar 29 1993 15:4518
    Thanks. Nice story, I saw the last part of it too. Glad to hear
    the whole story.

    Glad to hear what the name Smudge means...my youngest kitty's
    named Smudge and she sure is a "Little fire...a little
    firecracker that is!" We called her Smudge (or Smudgie once
    in a while too) because she's the color of a smudged finger
    print. She's blue (grey) with gold colored eyes.

    What a doll she's turned out to be.

    Glad there was a happy ending to the fire story. Wonder what ever
    happened to Mommy cat?

    :-)

    I think I remember reading this in the paper some time ago..don't
    recall where it was, but lack of an accent doesn't mean it wasn't
    MASS. Once you get past Worcester (going west), pronunciation returns
    to normal. ;^)
