522.0. "Persian Shaved" by NQOPS::BUSH () Sun Mar 21 1993 10:10

    I had to share this with all you cat lovers. I went to have
    my persian shaved, as I let her fur get away from me. She
    was so knotted up I went to the groomers. She ended up shaving
    her like a poodle. SHE LOOKS GREAT!!! It's so funny. She has
    now a puffy round head, puffy legs, and tail. Her body is all
    shaved. And my quiet, docile persian, has come out of her shell!!

    She runs around, plays like crazy, and purrs NON Stop!! She feels
    great!! I think I'm going to keep her shaved. Not only does she
    look like a little lion (she's a red persian), but she feels better.
    No more getting her fur stuck in her mouth, when trying to bathe
    herself, getting poop stuck to her tail from the kitty litter box,
    etc!! It's wonderful. Of course, the bad thing is the groomers
    fee. I paid $40 to have her shaved.

    Anyway...thought I'd let you other persian owners out there know
    about this, just incase all that fur is getting your cat down.

522.1Would it be cheaper if you bathed her?GAVEL::FALLONMon Mar 22 1993 05:595
    Jane, where do you live? Perhaps I know of someone who can do it for
    less. I have had this done to my persian too. Another option, if you
    keep her under control, perhaps you can bathe her yourself to keep the
    cost down.

    	Jane,

    	I had that done to my Himmie a couple of years ago. I think
    	I need to bring her to the groomer's again. It's nowhere near
    	as bad as before since I force her to let me brush her but...
    	she REFUSES to let me near her butt. And since I live alone,
    	it's hard to do by myself or give her a bath. So she's got
    	what I call 'poopybutt'.     Sigh......

    	Hopefully it won't cost too much this time since she won't need to
    	be shaved.

522.3another problem childCASCRT::LUSTHugs - food for the soulMon Mar 22 1993 07:4914
    I can certainly relate to the "poopybutt" syndrome - I had to give my
    long-haired foster-kitty a back-end bath this morning, as she was
    leaving "tracks" when she sat down. Oof, what a smell. I also was
    doing it alone, but this *couldn't* wait. Any hints on how to do
    this? All I did was to hold her around the middle, with her backside
    over the sink, and used the spray on her, but my side is rather
    scratched now, and she did not get completely clean, just enough to get
    rid of the worst. Clearly this is not good enough, I'll have to finish
    the job tonight. She also will not let me brush her, although my own
    four love to be brushed.

    Short of getting her clipped around the backside, any ideas?

522.4Ya, Kelsy tooMR4DEC::SHALLANMon Mar 22 1993 08:1418
    I have to bath Kelsy alot because of the same problem. Sometimes
    more than once a day (depends on what food she's gotten into that day).
    She's only 4 months old and she's had quite a few baths! At first she
    would put up a big fight, now she fights it but not as much. I do
    it alone all the time. I wear rubber gloves and I put her in the
    kitchen sink with her metal comb. I use the sprayer on her back-end
    and then shampoo it real good. After I rinse the shampoo off, I keep
    spraying her some will come off with only the spray, what doesn't I
    comb out right in the sink. Seems to come out easier with the fur
    dripping wet and doesn't seem to bother her too much.

    Since I was having to do this so much I took the sissors to her back
    end and the backs of her hind legs. She had real long hair, but I've
    been trying to keep it kinda short back there which seems to cut down on
    the problem some what. And since she likes to climb on my head and
    walk across my face while I sleep, I'ld rather she weren't dragging
    half the litter box with her.

522.6"kitty litter BUTT..yucko"NQOPS::BUSHTue Mar 23 1993 16:4617
    re: 5 - well, actually i used to think what a lovely fur piece i
    could make of her fur for around my maroon leather jacket!! :-)
    my persian had more fur on her than i ever believed a cat could
    have. she is beautiful though. and still is, as a "poodle cat".

    to answer some of the other folks to this problem, of "kitty litter
    butt".... the only way i have figured out to control it, to to keep
    the back end trimmed, constantly. if your persians/himalayans are
    like my cat, their fur grows like a crop!! constant trimming and
    brushing will keep this under control. too much bathing will only
    result in dry skin. cats have very delicate skin, and using the
    wrong shampoo, can really irritate them. also, too much brushing
    can hurt them.

    let me know what you all do!!

522.8trimming the butt...NQOPS::BUSHThu Mar 25 1993 19:2219
    re: 7 having a father that was a Vet .... i learned a lot about
    cats, and how awfully mean they can become when doing something they
    don't like. if your cat is not declawed, you will need to get a
    towel and wrap her feet up, as not to claw you, and then procede
    to trim her. if she is that hesitant, it will be a fight, but, you
    need to constantly use kind words, and a soothing voice, even though
    you probably want to smack her.... just keep it up, don't give up,
    and she'll finally realize that you don't want to hurt her.

    i have a german shepherd, that i vaccum now. she is great. i take
    my hand held dirt devil, and vaccumm her fur.!! she now loves it.
    but it took a few times, with loving care and words to get her there.

    with constant love and attention, any animal will do what you want.
    it just like a kid,.... patience and love win all.

    good luck!!

522.9Wish I could use the VacuumAKOCOA::JBOURQUEMon Mar 29 1993 10:5621

    	I just started looking in the notesfile for this type of
    	problem. Nilla (long hair) won't let me near her with
    	a brush. I need to get her to a groomer to get rid of
    	the big mats in her fur. I just don't know where to take
    	her that won't cost big $$$. We live in Bradford Mass...
    	near the NH border. She also desperately needs her hind
    	end washed and trimmed...she's impossible to handle when it
    	comes to cleaning accidents.

    	I was visiting my brother this weekend and he was showing
    	me what he does for Mischief (the kitty I gave him) he took
    	out the vacuum and she ran over and sat down and he ran
    	the vacuum over her and she played with the hose a bit....
    	Now with Nilla...all you have to do is open the closet door
    	where the vacuum is and she runs for cover!

    	If anyone knows of a groomer in the southern NH area that
    	can get rid of Nilla's mats and give her a good cleaning
    	I would love to get it done soon! She's about 16lbs of
    	mean-ness when it comes to brushes and water....

    	Is Bradford near the Nashua area? (I've never heard of it
    	to be honest)

    	I bring Chloe to The Pet Health Spa on DW Highway in
    	Merrimack. I've brought her there twice and was pleased
    	both times. This time 'round she was shampooed, brushed
    	and had mats clipped out. Cost $33.

522.11Do Animal Hospitals do grooming too?AKOCOA::JBOURQUEMon Mar 29 1993 13:1316

    	Bradford's in the Andover, Ma - Methuen, Ma area...my family
    	lives in Salem NH (about 15 minutes away) so I have taken
    	her for shots to the Salem Animal Hospital...I haven't found
    	a vet in my area that I have liked. I never thought to see
    	if the animal hospital does grooming too. I'll have to check.

    	I'm nervous about bringing her because she is a fighter and
    	goes wild when she see's the carrier...and forget it if I
    	bring her into the bathroom and close the door behind me cause
    	she knows she's going to get wet and she fights...I'm afraid
    	that the groomer isn't going to be able to hold her down to
    	get the mats out and shampoo her. But I suppose they are
    	experienced in handling fighting pets....right?

522.12You may need to work long and hard!ISLNDS::FALLONMon Mar 29 1993 13:2212
    Chelmsford Veterinary Hospital has a seperate grooming section. This
    might be helpful if the cat needs a little sedation, this is not
    unheard of. They are right on route 110 halfway between Chelmsford and
    Westford. 2 miles from exit 32 off of 495.

    You might want to try to get Nilla used to carriers. When we feed, all
    go into their own "special" carrier. It's a riot, if you open a can
    they hop up and wait for you to open their doors to let them in! Maybe
    if you can associate a "good" thing with carriers, she won't be so
    afraid. Mine also go in the car and to vets in them so it's not just
    for food. They seem pretty okay about it.

    re: 522.11 I took my persian to Blue Ribbon Kennels on Rt 3,
                  in Merrimack. I love them there. However, my
                  persian is a sweetheart, because she **is** a persian.
    	          However, my other cat, is just as lovable, but HATES
                  her carrier. What I did the last time, taking her
                  to the Vet's, was to very gently, put her in the
                  carrier, BUTT FIRST. Not head first. If i go head
                  first, she fights with all she's got.

                  Your cat can be tranquilized very gently, for grooming.
                  I suggest you do this, so she doesn't hurt herself, or
                  anyone else.

                  Let me know what you do.

522.14reply, in memory of FluffCONSLT::CHAMBERLAINMon Aug 23 1993 10:2717
    Hi,

    I have been doing this to my guys for 3 1/2 years. The first time they
    were shy, but after that... no problem.

    In spring, I had all shaved except face, feet and tail....
    In the fall, just the armpits,belly and butt...

    I really do think they are happier, but I noticed that as their hair
    grew in, they gained back that `I'm beautiful now' somewhat snobby
    attitude. Where when short after shaving, they were just a regular
    old street cat... that resembled and EWOCH or GREMLIN!

    This note was written in memory of Fluffy. Died Aug. 19, 1993, of a
    heart attack after giving him a flea bath at home. luv lisa

522.15Can she be shaved now?AKOCOA::JBOURQUEWed Sep 01 1993 06:1319

    	I need to have something done about Nilla, she is really bad
    	with matts and her butt as well. I had gotten all her matts
    	out myself at the beginning of the summer, but then I decided
    	to try and bathe her myself to clean up her hind end...but I
    	guess when I was trying to comb her out after her bath, (which
    	didn't go to well) and now she is one giant matt.... I was
    	thinking of bringing her down to have her shaved but I don't know
    	now that the weather is going to get cooler. She is an indoor
    	only cat, and I spent all morning this morning holding her because
    	she was throwing up all over the place, all food, but I think there
        might be a fur ball somewhere, but after all the times she threw
    	up this morning, I am not so sure. I am going to take her to the
    	vet but I was thinking I would also like to get her shaved.....

    	Any opinions on shaving a cat at this time of year?

    	Also has anyone had their cat Groomed at the Salem (NH) Animal
    	Hospital?

    	I am having Nilla groomed this Saturday by the Salem (NH)
    	Grooming Center thats connected to the Salem Animal Hospital.

    	They said they needed proof that she was up-to-date on her
    	shots... (she isn't) so they are going to take her to the
    	"Hospital" side first for shots and then groom her...she
    	will be having matts cut out and bathed.

    	This is the first time she will be professionally groomed....
    	(when she was smaller I tried to bathe her myself, she's 5
    	years old and about 18 lbs now)

    	Has anyone ever had their cat groomed here? She is a fighter
    	when it comes to grooming so I thought the hospital would be
    	a better place to take her if they need to "relax" her a bit.

	I hope she doesn't hate me for it!!!!

    When I took a stray persian to the vet to have his mats cut out, they
    gave him a general to knock him out completely while they did it. I
    thought that was general practice. Mind you, he WAS badly matted.

    	Nilla had her grooming and shots Saturday, I was very happy
    	with the Salem Grooming place. She was the only cat there
    	and the dogs were making her very nervous, so they moved her
    	upfront under the counter away from the dogs.... She only
    	had part of her back "shaved" and she is nice and clean and
    	happy. I thought she would be mad at me for a long time, but
    	when I got her home, she followed around the house and acted
    	fine.
    	I was really happy that they noticed how the dogs were upsetting
    	her and they moved her to make her feel more secure.

    	Now the next problem I have to deal with...the Vet said she
    	has tartar and gingivitis...recommends having her teeth cleaned...
    	(guess I'll have to read up on that one....)
