444.0. "My Tigress is ill" by TRACTR::MCGOWAN () Mon Nov 23 1992 04:28

I need some advice. Yesterday my little Tigress threw up her
breakfast. She immediately ran and hid as if she had done something
wrong. I found her hiding and let her know that it was ok. She
seemed fine for the rest of the day. Then, she threw up her supper.
Again, she hid and I found her. Then, for about 2 hours last nite
she was real restless and could not decide where to sleep. She
finally settled down UNDER the bed. She usually sleeps on the bed
with us. Anyway, She ate breakfast this morning and threw up this
6 inch long mushy thing. It looked too big to be in her tummy. Again,
she hid. I am beside myself with fear. I can't bear the thought
of losing her. Does anyone out there have any ideas of what could
possibly be wrong with Tigress? I plan to call the vet this morning.
She is sleeping now, in the bed. She purrs, plays, and her temperment
seems good but she cannot keep her food down. She is strictly an
indoor kitty so I know that she did not pick up anything from outside.
Again, any advice is welcome. Also, I am currently in the market for
a Feline Vet somewhere in the location of Chelmsford. Does anyone
    know of one?

    Thanks for your help,
    Arlene

As for Chelmsford vets, I can't recommend Dr. Brian Holub...I think he's
at Countryside. He's wonderful!!

Poor Tigress....can you describe what the 6" mushy thing looked like? Was
it brown, cigar shaped? That would have been a hair ball. They're really
not balls--they're torpedos!! That would have caused her to keep tossing.
Was it a long thin white wormy thing? That would be roundworms--very easy
for you and your vet to treat. My guess would be hair torpedo....that
would explain why she felt so much better afterwards. If it was a hair
torpedo, you can try any of the "Femalt"-type products on the market in your
local pet shop. Femalt is very much liked in my house, as is Petromalt.
They aid in the passage of the hair thru the intestine. My guys lick it
right out of the tube. It might take a few efforts to get Tigress to like
it. One of the recommendations is to put it on her paw and she'd lick it
off. Ya, sure....my Honey immediately wiped his paw all over the carpet........

I usually also place it on their paws and usually the cat will lick it off.
But, I found that I better make sure it is stuck on real good. The last time
I gave it to the cat he tried to shake it off his paw. Next thing I know the
glob was flying across the room and stuck to the wall. A little water took it
off easily. I don't think that I would want to leave it on good upholstery for
any lenght of time or even at all.

Mary, didn't you mean to say that YOU WOULD RECOMMEND BRIAN HOLUB? I
certainly would! He is right on Route 110 in Chlemsford. The
telephone number there is 256-9555 and you can tell them Karen Fallon
referred you. Also Dr. Lon Schlussel is very good. They have evening
hours too. It is a complete hospital and not a clinic. Brian breeds
cats so he is fairly well up on everything!

YIKES!! I can't say enough about Dr. Holub! I can't recommend him more
highly!! I can't type!! I can't note!! I CAN recommend Dr. Holub!!

I've been sick all weekend...the brain is GONE.............
444.5Thanks from TigressTRACTR::MCGOWANMon Nov 23 1992 10:0918
Thank you all for your input. I ended up taking Tigress to my regular
vet who is located in Hudson Mass. I used to live there and Hudson
Animal Hospital has been wonderful so I kept bringing my kitties there.
However, I think that it is time to change as these emergencies get a
little tiring. Anyway, I will try Dr Holub. The vet in Hudson also
thinks that Tigress could be having hairball problems. He said that
her little tonsils were a bit swollen from vomiting. Her temperature
is fine, she is not dehidrated and he thinks that she is going to be
ok. I am giving her Laxitone twice a day to break up the hairballs and
hopefully make her feel better. She licks it right off of my hand. I
just love her so very much. In fact, I am cancelling my plans to meet
my husband up in Maine for Thanksgiving. I would rather stay home and
take care of my baby. He is up there hunting. Sometimes I just can't
belive that I am married to a HUNTER!!

Thanks again for your help and recommendations!

444.6swallowed foreign object?RLAV::BARRETTIs it safe?Mon Nov 23 1992 10:1515
Isn't 6" an awfully long hairball?

Keep an eye on your girl. Could she have swallowed something else?
Does the mushy thing look like anything you might have had around the
house? My cat Spike once swallowed at cat toy string - the elastic
kind covered with black fabric. He threw part of it up and it look
like a 5" long mushy thing which I identified as part of the string.

Has she eaten anything and kept it down since she threw up the
mushy thing? If so, she may be past this. If not, get her to the
vet (and take a sample of the mushy thing if you can get one).

    Good luck!

My guys have throw up 6 inch hairballs, although usually they are
smaller than that. If she seems to be doing okay now, I would
basically stop worrying except for using the Laxatone, etc.

I did bring the 6" mushy thing with me to the vet. He told me that it
was mostly food with hair in it. He specifically looked down her tiny
throat for string or something that may have been cought there. When I
got home this morning around 9:00 I gave her a little bit of food. I
waited until 9:15 and she seemed ok. I brought her to the vet and she
seemed to hold the food down. Anyway, I will be leaving here at 4:00
and I pray that there is no vomit anywhere. I will not be here for the
rest of the week and will let you all know how she is after the
holiday. Thanks again for your concern and help and I wish you all the
    best for Thanksgiving.
