About the bald spot- one of my shelter cats started going bald about
a month after I brought him home. He went bald from the top of
his head, down the back of his neck and behind the ears. I was
beside myself trying to figure out what was wrong. The first vet I went
to said it wasn't ringworm - maybe was a fungus but he wasn't sure.
Then I went to Dr. Nord (and who is now my regular vet) who said that
some shelter cats do this- cause is unknown - and the hair ultimately
does grow back. I have had over the years about 12 shelter cats
and this happened only once.
It probably would have gotten better on its own but I had to do
something to make ME feel useful, so I rubbed small amounts of
Vaseline on the spot. The Vaseline couldn't hurt him if he licked it,
and it made "me" feel ever so much better.
Maybe the vets now have something to help but if it is what my cat had-
it will go away on its own eventually. I think it took about a month
for the hairs to start in again. He is orange, so the hairs were really
fine, light colored and hard to see. Maybe Charlie actually has hair
growing back already but he won't let you near enough to see them.

| you have had Charlie for awhile tho haven't you? Frannie went bald
so after I brought him home. But it still could be the same thing.

| The stray I'm tending also has a bald spot, right in front of his right
rear hip. Not red, he doesn't scratch or bite it, perfectly healthy
looking skin with absolutely no fur! Odd...maybe it's one of those
throw-away cat symptoms? I keep calling it his badge of courage, since
he and his twin sister survived their first year on their own until
they found their way into my yard. I suppose the vet will give it some
really long name and give me some really expensive ointment to put on
it?

| Lasher has a pea-sized bald spot on one of his paws which I just
noticed last week. The vet checked it out when he neutered him. I was
afraid it might be ringworm, because it was kind of reddish colored,
but the vet says it's a scar. I have no idea how it happened, and I
guess he'll always be bald there.
Oh, well...

| My cat has been pulling out her own hair all over her body. The vet
knew that she was pulling it out because if you went against the hair
line it was rough feeling. They gave her a shot of some sort in case
it was an allergic reaction. It could also be stress! I had a cat
once that when I left him w/ my boyfriend after moving out (as it was
his cat) - the cat pulled all his hair out of his tail & that area. As
soon as he gave me the cat - all the hair grew back & he was fine. The
vet informed me that it was stress.

| My cat Nicholas would bite himself and pull his hair out somewhere near
his hind quarter to the point he had a huge bald spot. The vet said it
had to do with a hormonal imbalance, gave him an injection and tube of
the missing hormone. It cleared it right up. What's weird is he's
doing it again lately, so maybe I need to follow my note and take him
to see the vet. Thanks, Lynne
