328.0. "Round, bleeding patches" by RIPPLE::KENNEDY_KA (Winds of Change) Fri Jul 10 1992 08:24

Two weeks ago I noticed a large (about the size of quarter) red
bleeding patch on Skeeters neck. It is round and the fur is gone. I
figured there had been a fight or something and it was wound. I've
kept an eye on it and while it has healed somewhat and shrunk it's not
    gone.

This morning I noticed another patch starting a 3 inches away from the
first one. The fur has fallen out and it's just starting to turn red
and bleed. Now I'm concerned enough that I'm going to take her to vet
    this afternoon.

All of my cats are indoor cats. Anyone have any ideas of what this
    might be?

You've given a pretty good description of ring worm. It's not a worm actually,
but a fungus infection..like athelete's foot. It can be transmitted from
animals to humans and humans to animals. Don't know where an indoor cat would
pick this up, but it needs to be treated to preven further spreading.

Liz (who has seen this spread from calfs to cousins at an uncle's
dairy farm.)

I was going to say ringworm too (my two have recently gotten over it)
but the description "bloody" didn't sound right. It's possible she is
itchy and scratching the lesions to the point of drawing blood.

There's another note in this conference on RINGWORM which has some
information. Your vet can tell you for sure, woodsman lamp and fungal
    culture.

Ringworm isn't a killer but a real BIG nuisance!

If not ringworm, then possibly a form of eczema. My TK had this
several years ago, and we never did determine the exact cause, though
I suspected a food or inhalant allergy of sorts.

If it is eczema, this spreads very rapidly, and is very itchy and
uncomfortable for the cat. Yes, it was bloody, oozy, scaling, and raw.

Course of treatment was a long acting shot of cortisone followed by
administration of steroids (prednisone) in pill form. The cost was
    minimal, about $30.

Please let us know what is diagnosed.

328.4? Mites ?ASABET::FRANCISFri Jul 10 1992 12:2915

This sounds very familiar to what Felix had. He was diagnosed
with *mites*. I couldn't see them & they weren't in his ears, but
somehow he got them and the were next to his ear & above his eye. It
was very itchy, bloody (caused from him scratching) not very oozy
    though.

Drops on the outside, other drops orally, and daily cleaning with
    somthing similar to saline.

The Vet also treated Oscar, just in case.

    Keep us updated.

We just got back from the vet. He didn't think it was ringworm, but
did a culture to be on the safe side. He said he would be very, very
surprised if it came back positive.

He thinks it is a food allergy. Skeeter is prone to asthma so this is
probably an allergy. He did give her a cortisone shot and I'm to watch
her over the next couple of weeks. The results of the culture will be
back in 3 - 10 days. If it is a food allergy I'll have to put her on a
    lamb and rice diet.

I gotta say I'm proud of Skeets. She only growled and hissed once at
the vet. Usually she is so mad about being there we can hardly hold
her! She done good today! :-)

Thanks for all the replies and support!

I'm beginning to suspect a mild flea infestation. I was brushing Cleo
this morning and found one flea on her. I thoroughly combed her with
the flea comb, but didn't find anymore. I then combed Skeeter and
found one flea on her. Alex didn't have any, Katie had three. This is
the first time in four years that my guys have had fleas so hopefully I
caught it early. Today everyone gets flea baths and this week I'll
have the condo sprayed. I cannot tolerate fleas. I hate them. Cleo
also has one of those patches starting below her left ear, so I'll keep
    a close eye on her.

    Fleas, YUCK!

    Karen,

It could very easily be fleas and your kitty could be allergic to the
fleas. This happened to Seasea (a former cat of mine) a few years ago.
Her present owner saw the scab and brought her to the vets. She
definitely had fleas and this was an allergic reaction to them.

So, Carrie had to completely bomb the house, Seasea had to be dipped
(she got a rinse, but no set!). It's quite a process you need to go
    through!

I agree Holly, it is quite a process. When I moved into this condo 4
years ago the place was infested with them. I combed the cats daily
with a flea comb (drowning the little buggers in dishwashing liquid),
bathed them once a week and it was general war against them. Between
my efforts and the condo association spraying for carpenter ants I
haven't had a problem since then. I only found 5 fleas this weekend,
but that is 5 fleas too many, IMNSHO. Hopefully I caught the
    infestation early enough.

Little Skeeters could definitely use some kitty hugs. Sunday there was
a major cat fight among everyone and Skeeter got clawed on the inner
rim of her eyelid. Not only was it sore and swollen, but meany mom has
to put Terramycin in it twice a day. Thank God the eye didn't get
clawed. Now, she has a cold, probably picked up at the vet's office
last week. She is definitely one punky feeling kitty. :-( And
tomorrow she gets a flea bath, with everyone else.

    A cat's life is hell, isn't it? 8*)
