294.0. "Do they hurt each other" by TEGAN::LACORTI () Fri May 22 1992 07:18

My cat is a neutered male and I let him outside. Last night he did not come home
until really late and I was out of my mind with worry. The reason being that
there was this other mean looking cat outside hanging around where my cat hangs
out. (by my neighbors house). I thought that maybe this cat had beat up my cat
and Chief was hurt somewhere. Chief gets along with most of the known neighborhood
cats and loves to play with them. It is the strays that I worry about. Anyway,
my question is, can a cat get visious (sp?) enuf to kill or mame another cat? I
know that males will sometimes fight and bloody each other up, but will a whole
male leave a neutered male alone? I am great at worrying, and would have prefered
an indoor only cat if my husband had not grown up with an outdoor/indoor cat and
insisted that we let him outdoors.

A whole male will fight with any cat if it invades his territory....
(Unless, of course, it is a whole female!)

Before I finally adopted J.C. and VG (our two neighborhood Toms)
they use to come home with some very bad battle wounds! Normally
when there is a cat fight over territory...and in most cases
one of the cats will back down and run away! But he will have
    some wounds!

I would like to suggest that if you are going to let the cat out...
make it so he can go out during the day...but he is inside at night.
He seems to me that most of the nasty cat fights are at night when
the Toms are on the prowl. Just a thought....my cats have a
curfew of 5:30 and it is truly amazing how they have got use to
this schedule. I call for them...and they come running! (well except
Angus who can be a poop sometimes!!)

Most of the time I start to try to get him in around 9ish and he is always back
before 11. I will never go to bed until he is in. I do let him out in the early
evening because he no longer uses/needs a liter box and I would rather be woken
up at 6 am that 4. Last Thursday was the first time he was gone for so long and
I got really worried. He has never come home with any cuts, bruises, etc, and I
think he is the fastest one around. He is about a year old and a slender 9
pounds. The stray I saw was much bigger than him, that is why I worried. It
was probably this territory thing, where the bigger cat won. I think that Chief
has a territory. If I walk down this one street in my neighborhood he will
follow/walk with me. If I go down this other street (we are on a rounded corner)
he will only go to my neighbor's driveway and stop. It is the strangest thing.
The funniest story though is that the next night, Friday, my husband and
I went on an outing for his office. I could not get Chief in and I was running
real late. So I not only left the garage to outside door open 6 inches but I
also left the door from the house to the garage open. I figured that since he
could come and go as he pleased that when I got home at midnight I would have to
frantically look for him. Well we got home and sure enuf he was in the house as
if to say, I stayed home waiting for you, why are you so late?
